Construction

This thread is to discuss bout the construction industry. I’ve seen many freshies regardless qs, engineer, archi, contractor join the industry n discover its too tough for them or its not what they envision it to be and are disappointed with the pay.
Before you spend time reading on to decide to be or not to be in construction please read the items 1 to 7 below 1st.
1.	Construction industry regardless which party you join will most certainly work late hours and the possibility of overtime claim in quite low.
2.	Tight and extreme deadlines are a norm
3.	It is a dirty and dangerous industry (construction sites are basically a mine field)
4.	Benefits are basically none (MNC or not don’t expect to have perks)
5.	If u r a guy m&e basically no gals, civil u may meet some, archi a few, qs is the most……
6.	Be prepared to hear all the curse and swear words…..
7.	High pressure (1 engineer may handle 3-4 jobs at once when all of the erupt well… u’ll hav a massive headache)
If you cant face the above better try another industry…..

Since I’m an engineer I’ll talk bout the career path of an engineer in this industry…maybe we can touch on some other groups like qs, archi. But I wont go into how to get your PE in MY (PLEASE read tru BEM n IEM websites and other threads by others in the J&C forum).
1.	I’ll jus touch on how to be a PE in SG
2.	I’ll go into why and why not get a PE is it worth it?
3.	I’ll go into career path of a mech/elec engineer in construction
4.	Work and job scope of a M&E engineer in consultancy
5. How does a project come about.

1.	PE in SG
Read http://app.peb.gov.sg/Downloads/RegistrationasPE.pdf its all there. the only Malaysian uni recognized in sg for the field of elec mech n civil is UM http://app.peb.gov.sg/Html/pe_approved.html refer to the link if u dun belif me. If you still insist on getting ur PE in sg still possible u’ll need to obtain a masters degree from a local uni (eg. NUS, NTU) then only u’ll b allowed to sit for the PE exam.
P.S msia PE cant practice in SG and vice versa

2.	I’ve seen many ppl naively thinking getting a PE means all their troubles will go away… they assume that they’ll get high ranks/position, they’ll get high pay, they’ll gain respect, they can finally be the boss jus sit down n shake leg wait $ to drop on their laps. These thinking are all totally wrong. It may hav worked 20y ago where few or no PE can be found. Nowadays especially in msia every corner you can get a PE.
Getting a PE = responsibility doesn’t mean u can just blindly sign off on the drawings and forget about it.
Scenario 1: Electrical PE sign-off on a building’s electrical design. A tripping occurs causing the whole office building to trip. That office building hav banks, trading floors, server rooms...etc the trip can cause equipment to overheat n burn, can cause data over servers to be wiped out, can cause trading companies lose millions in transactions. Investigations will be taken on is it’s the design fault then the PE will be in deep s***….
Scenario 2: Mechanical PE sign-off on a building’s mech design. A fire occurs places which have smoke control system hav to work, places will fire the sprinkler system hav to work, hosereel, wet riser pumps also hav to work. Anyone of this does not work lives can be lost.
Scenario 3: Civil PE sign-off on the structural design of the building, the building crack and collapse well no needless to say u get the picture right?
So what I want to emphasize is that getting a PE and signing off on drawings means you are accountable for that design, you agree with the design, you are signing to agree that is s*** happens to the building you are responsible. So still thinking getting a PE is fun?

IMHO getting a PE is becos u hav passion for the industry and u wanna improve urself. Some ppl say jus get a PE then dont sign anything so no responsibility yeah its jus like saying i get a ferrari n park it at home dont drive it cos scare scratch sooner or later the car will spoil, n in the end no one will even know u have one. sonner or later u'll forget what and how to sign n ppl will forget u even hav a PE title.

For me i'm not rushing to get my PE, cos i to me its the experience that counts not the title....i've seen PE's get screwed by non-PE engineers half their age, i've seen PEs who r clueless they jus let ppl use their name n signature.... . If you have the knowladge n experience as well as the network theres no need for u to be a PE urself, u can jus employ one after all getting a PE doesnt mean it guaranties tat u get the job end of the day its all about networking and price aka $

3.	Ok so you r a fresh grad elec/mech engineer and wan to join the construction line there are quite a few options u can go for

a.	Consultancy – generally as a building services consultant u take care of the building’s services how to make a building work. A house u basically incharge of designing the water points, power points, sanitary, telecom, security (cctv, card access). Apply for incoming power, water and connection to sewerage. Ensure that the building hav adequate fire protection etc. Big ones is msia include SSP, KTA, PJ & Leong, MEI, Valdun, etc. international ones which are mainly based in SG Parsons Brinkerhoff, Beca Carter, Meinahrdt, Aecom, SKM etc…
You can also venture to more specialized consultancy eg. Fire consultant, Green consultant. As a fire consultant, u ensure that projects which cannot be protected using the conventional design be able to comply with the authority requirement using whatever additional protection and simulations. Arup, Ignesis
Green consultancy is helping the client to achieve a green building saving energy and on maintenance. They also help in achieveing green targets in msia is the GreenBuildingIndex in sg is called GreenMark is America is called LEEDS. ZEB, Arup, etc.

b.	Contractor
Many contractors out there, basically they r the installation guys. The consultant comes out wif the drawings they install it according to the drawings. Can be divided in to main contractors and sub-contractors
Main contractors basically they do not do their own installation they will sub-contract out the works to another party. Why? As a main-contractor they have the capital & capacity to obtain big projects and they don’t need to maintain workers they basically jus manage the project. Sunway construction, PLB, WCT, IJM Gamuda.
Sub-contractors/specialist contractors. They r the ones doing the real work. They are the ones who do the installations on site.

c.	Sales / supplier
They are usually divided to technical sales and pure sales. Pure sales if u hav a sweet mouth, technical sales usually support the pure sales guy. Technical sales are basically the supporter to pure sales. ABB, Schneider, Trane, Carrier

my suggestion (if u hav the passion) is to be a contractor 1st look at what u r getting into learn the very basics, then consultancy, these 2 r totally different fields some ppl may not be able to adapt to the change then at least u'll know what is happening. Some fresh grads come into consultancy dont even know what a conduit is, some of the forummers here even worst wan to b a PE but dont know wats a PE

4.	Job scope as a M&E consultant includes designing system, project management, prepare tender documents and reports, attending site meetings, conduct site & system inspections, approving progress claims, review shop drawings, liaising with local authorities, etc......

a.	Electrical engineer – basically covers HV, LV design, ELV (CCTV, Card access, TV, PA, network, etc), Telecom, Lifts (depending on which country some countries lifts are handled by mech engineers).

b.	Mechanical engineer – Air Conditioning. Mechanical Ventilation, plumbing, sanitary, fire protection.

5.	In a building project there are a few parties involved depending on the size and complexity of the project. Take a shopping center for example, there will be the following ppl involved
a.	Client – Basically the developer or the owner they come out with the cash
b.	Architect – they make the client’s idea into reality
c.	Engineers – covers both M&E and C&S they make the architect’s idea into reality
d.	QS – basically the ppl who are suppose to administer the contract and take care of all the $$ matters

so basically the archi hav the highest fee the rest are divided between the other consultants.

what else you wanna know? drop me a pm or post it here. I know there are many ppl here in this industry can jus join in to discuss, bit*ch and whine.....
