Selling a used wall mounted air cond

So, I have a wall mounted air cond set (1.0 HP) that roughly 6 months old.

I'm moving off and would like to sell the unit.

Anybody have any experiences selling/ buying these types of air cond units ?
If you sell, are you expected to arrange for installation as part of the package offered ?

LIFE has become difficult for residents of Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam, who share their neighbourhood with thousands of foreign workers.

Foreigners from 14 countries, including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar and Nepal have made Taman Sri Muda their home. According to long-time local residents, the immigrants have brought with them a host of problems.

The popularity of Taman Sri Muda, which was developed in the 1970s, has declined because of the frequent flashfloods here.

Many Malaysians have moved out and their units are now being rented to foreigners working in factories in Shah Alam.

Foreign colony

Taman Sri Muda Zone A Rukun Tetangga chairman T. Mogan said some apartments had become rundown after more foreigners moved in.

Mogan said the presence of foreigners had also led to an increase in social problems.

“They drink in public until the wee hours of the morning.

“Some end up sleeping on the road in a drunken state while others engage in fights and cause a public nuisance,” he said.

Taman Sri Muda RT committee member J. Sountharajan said more 24-hour liquor shops had sprouted in the area.

He said although most premises were closed by 11pm, liquor could still be purchased after midnight through a small sneak hole.

“We have been told that beer is readily available at ridiculously low prices,” he added.

Mogan is also worried about the cleanliness of the area.

“Walking on the road can be tricky as you have to avoid spit and betelnut juice,” he said.

Sri Muda assemblyman Shuhaimi Shafiei said cultural differences were the reason why many Malaysians felt uncomfortable with the presence of foreigners.

“Hygiene is another issue, since these foreigners operate and work in food outlets, there is concern about their level of cleanliness,” he said.

Shuhaimi said food waste, especially leftover meat, was often thrown in the drains.

Foreign businesses

Residents say they are finding it hard to buy fresh produce as most of the business outlets are owned or run by immigrants.

M. Arivinthan, 31, said he felt out of place in the neighbourhood.

“I feel like I am living in a foreign country.

“Many are operating businesses in Taman Sri Muda commercial centres without a licence,” he said.

Most conduct their business from shoplots while others run stalls in the market near Plaza Sri Muda.

Another committee member, A. Raman said most of the businesses in Plaza Sri Muda were run by foreigners.

Barbers, vegetable stalls, tailors and even travel companies are dominated by those from Bangladesh.

While some ground floor lots house local restaurants and food outlets, a glance upwards reveal signboards in a foreign language.

A local trader P. Vanu, 75, said their revenue had been affected by the rise in foreign traders.

He, however, blames the locals for the situation.

“Malaysians get the licences but rent them out to foreigners,” he said.

He said even the wet market has turned into a mini market with more foreign products stocked.

Safety issues

Locals are worry about walking on the street, especially after 6pm and on Sundays, because of the presence of large numbers of foreigners, Vanu said.

Sounthararajan said several housing estates were plagued by frequent fights and criminal activities.

“Several apartments here have been fully taken over by foreigners ,” he said.

“Garbage is strewn everywhere and the stench of stale food and urine hangs in the air.”

Residents have even heard gunshots fired in the middle of the night, leading to most Malaysians moving out.

A resident who wished to be known only as Chin, said she felt unsafe walking alone at night.

“Women have to think twice before going to the bank or the market to buy groceries,” she said.

Most only venture outside in groups or go with their male relatives.

Residents are hoping for greater police presence and in the meantime, the RT patrols every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

They are hoping for more participation from other Malaysian residents.

“Ops Cantas has helped reduce the number of crimes.

“However, we hope there will be more police personnel here as this place can be considered a crime hotspot,” added Mogan.

Student kept as sex slave for 17 months

HYDERABAD is reeling in shock by the revelation that a 20-year-old polytechnic college student was abducted and kept as a sex slave for 17 months by the owner of the college’s canteen.

Makkal Osai reported that the student managed to escape from captivity and return home on Tuesday while the suspect, Satya Prakash Singh, 33, was arrested a day later.

The girl said she had been confined in different houses in the city since April last year during which time Satya raped her repeatedly.

She also said she had to undergo an abortion during the period.

According to her police statement, the student said she was given a glass of fruit juice which contained sedatives at the canteen before she was abducted.

Her plight has gone viral, with Netizens launching an online campaign to demand a speedy trial and for Satya to pay dearly.

Firemen rescue child trapped in car

KUALA LUMPUR: A young boy was crying and desperately calling out for his mother from inside a locked multi purpose vehicle at a parking lot in front of Hospital Fatimah, Ipoh, Perak.

MCA Public Service and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong got to personally witness the trauma of the trapped child last Saturday – something he thought would not happen as such cases had hit the headlines time and again.

He was having breakfast at a shop near the hospital that day when he saw people and firemen surrounding the black MPV.

From inside the car, they could see the boy was sweating profusely, said Chong. The engine of the car was switched off and he could have been inside the car for more than half an hour.

He added if not for the passers-by, the boy might have suffered the same fate as other children who died after being trapped in vehicles.

Fire and Rescue Department team leader, Samsuddin Buki, could not break the window as he feared shattering the glass might harm the boy.

He patiently coaxed the boy to slowly unlock the car door. After about five minutes, the boy complied and he was rescued.

Chong said the mother looked nervous as she came back soon after her child was rescued.

“The mother held the child briefly and then walked away after thanking the rescue team.

“But I could tell that she was embarrassed with herself,” he said.

Constable raped during funeral process

Ranchi, Aug 24 (IANS) In a ghastly crime, a woman constable in the process of performing the last rites for a dead relative was gang-raped in Jharkhand's Latehar district, police said.
According to police, the widow, who had been given a job as a constable on compassionate grounds after her husband was killed by Maoists, was accompanied by relatives as she was taking the body to Garwah, about 150 km from Ranchi, Thursday night.
The criminals stopped the vehicle near Jaldaga bridge of Latehar district, around 130 km from Ranchi, and looted the relatives who were accompanying the body.
Three of the men then allegedly gang-raped the woman constable, in the very vehicle in which the body was kept.
The constable lodged a complaint with police Friday. She also underwent a medical check-up.
Police have launched a hunt to nab the people involved in the crime.
Jharkhand has witnessed a spurt in incidents of sexual crime in recent months. In Pakur district, six minor girls were gang-raped at two places last month.

Ugonna Philip Nwankwo, 29, was found guilty by Justice Noor Azian Shaari, of trafficking in 4.85kg of cannabis at a bus stop near Sunway Pyramid, Bandar Sunway at 1 pm on Nov 9, 2010 and 1.4kg of the same substance at a house in Jalan SS12/2D, Bandar Baru Subang Jaya at 3pm on the same day.

Throughout the trial, seven witnesses were called by the prosecution represented by deputy public prosecutor Aida Mastura Mohamed Aman while Nwankwo was the sole witness called by defence counsel Afifuddin Ahmad Hafifi. - Bernama

Myanmar Nationals off-ing one another !

PETALING JAYA: More than 1,000 Myanmar nationals have been picked up by a Kuala Lumpur police task force aimed at averting more clashes between feuding factions.

They were not detained, but only picked up by police to check if they had valid documents in a joint operation with the Immigration Department and UNHCR.

Seven clashes had been reported involving Myanmar nationals in Kuala Lumpur and some parts of Selangor between May 30 and June 4, said Kuala Lumpur deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Amar Singh.

“So far, two Myanmar nationals have been killed, two others are in critical condition while others were also injured,” he said yesterday.

SAC Amar said the clashes in Malaysia were linked to the riots occurring in Myanmar.

“We have taken steps to prevent further bloodshed by picking up more than 1,000 Myanmar workers mainly in Sentul, Cheras, Brickfields and Dang Wangi.

“Those who do not have valid documents will be detained,” he said.

He said the task force had also met with leaders of the two main groups of Myanmar nationals in the country.

“We want to end the problem before it goes overboard,” he added.

MADRID (Reuters) - Workers hit by lower living standards and record high unemployment staged May Day protests across Europe on Wednesday, hoping to persuade their governments of the case for easing austerity measures and boosting growth.

In the debt-laden euro zone countries of Spain, Greece, Italy and France tens of thousands of people took to the streets to demand jobs and an end to years of belt-tightening.

In Spain, where the economy has shrunk for seven consecutive quarters and unemployment stands at a record 27 percent, thousands of people snaked up Madrid's Gran Via central shopping street carrying placards reading "austerity ruins and kills".

"The future of Spain looks terrible; we're going backwards with this government," said former civil servant Alicia Candelas, 54, who has been without a job for two years.

Unions said 50,000 people marched in Madrid and more than 1 million took part in peaceful rallies across the country. There was no independent estimate, and police did not give a figure.

Trains and ferries were cancelled in Greece, and bank and hospital staff walked off the job after unions there called a 24-hour strike, the latest in a string of protests in a country in its sixth year of recession.

About 1,000 police officers were deployed in Athens, but the demonstration passed off peacefully, with about 5,000 striking workers, pensioners and students marching to parliament holding banners reading: "We won't become slaves, take to the streets!".

Earlier, hundreds of protesters affiliated with the Communist KKE party made a clenched-fist salute on Syntagma Square, scene of clashes between police and protesters during previous protests.

AUSTERITY VS GROWTH

Four euro zone countries - Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Cyprus - have received sovereign bailouts. With little or no sign of growth in the currency bloc, the European Central Bank is expected to cut interest rates to a record low of 0.5 percent at its meeting on Thursday.

But analysts say that alone will do little to lift the zone out of recession, and several governments are now openly discussing policies to try to boost growth.

Italy's new Prime Minister Enrico Letta told Germany on Tuesday that his government would meet its budget commitments but expected Europe to drop its austerity mantra and do more to lift growth.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, seen by many in southern Europe as the champion of the belt-tightening approach, struck a conciliatory tone, saying "budget consolidation and growth need not be contradictory".

Letta met French President Francois Hollande on Wednesday, expecting a more favourable hearing for his focus on growth.

France's two biggest unions, split over Hollande's labour law reforms, held separate May 1 marches. Hollande's approval rating has dropped as low as 25 percent as cuts bite and unemployment has risen.

German unions said about 425,000 people took part in more than 400 events around the country.

Michael Sommer, head of the DGB federation of German labour unions, said the German government should have more solidarity with the rest of the euro zone.

"We cannot allow this continent to be 'kaputtgespart' - forced to save so much that it breaks apart," he said.

Tens of thousands marched in Italy's major cities to demand action to tackle unemployment - at 11.5 percent overall and 40 percent among the young. Demonstrators in Turin threw hollowed eggs filled with black paint at police.

Pope Francis made a May Day appeal for governments to tackle unemployment, as "work is fundamental to the dignity of a person".

"I think of how many, and not just young people, are unemployed, many times due to a purely economic conception of society, which seeks selfish profit, beyond the parameters of social justice," he told a crowd in St. Peter's Square.

Thousands of people marched in Lisbon calling for an end to austerity dictated by Portugal's EU/IMF bailout, a day after the government said there would be more spending cuts.

Traditional May Day marches were also taking place outside the euro zone. In Russia, about 1.5 million people were expected to take part in parades, a fraction of the millions that used to march in Soviet times.

In Istanbul, Turkish riot police fired water cannon and tear gas to disperse crowds gathering for a rally. A Reuters photographer said at least six people were injured.

Turkish authorities often use force to prevent the rally in the city centre, having this year denied trade unions permission to march on Taksim Square, saying construction work there would make it too dangerous.

How to delay court appearance ?

I was recently saman-ed at a JPJ roadblock for not having a valid road tax and insurance.

Padan muka, my fault.

JPJ officer asked me to appear in the local magistrate's court sometime early April.

Problem is, I will be out of the country on a business trip and will not be able to return until sometime past the court hearing date.

Does anybody know who I can appeal to to have my case brought forward or postponed ?
Do I just write an appeal letter to JPJ or the magistrate's office ?

If not, what are the procedures ?

Racist attacks in Greece hit "alarming" levels

Greece is a major gateway for mostly Asian and African migrants trying to enter the European Union and immigrants face growing hostility as the debt-laden country goes through its worst economic downturn in six decades.

The agency said 87 racist attacks were recorded by rights and migrant groups between January and September this year, calling the results "exceptionally alarming". Actual numbers were likely to be far higher since victims were either too scared to report attacks to the police or turned away, it said.

"The victims speak of areas in Athens which have become off limits to them due to the fear of attack", UNHCR said in the report. "It is telling that no perpetrator of a violent racist attack has been sentenced."

Most victims were attacked in public spaces such as squares or on public transport, usually by groups of men dressed in black and at times wearing helmets or with their faces covered.

Some of the more prominent attacks against immigrants reported this year include a young Iraqi stabbed to death in Athens in August and an Albanian stabbed with a sword by a masked motorcycle rider in May.

The attackers often used clubs or crowbars and sometimes large dogs, the report said. Most victims were undocumented migrants from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Somalia.

The agency said in some cases victims said their attackers were wearing the insignia of the far-right Golden Dawn party.

Golden Dawn was catapulted out of obscurity this year on a fiercely anti-immigrant agenda, the first time an ultra-nationalist group has entered parliament since the fall of a military junta in 1974.

Its members give Nazi-style salutes and the party's emblem resembles a swastika but the group denies the neo-Nazi label.

"Today we are sounding alarm bells because racist violence and the threat of fascism have spread and threaten democracy," said Costis Papaioannou, head of Greece's National Commission for Human Rights.

The UNHCR said it found 15 incidents where police officers used violence during routine checks and cited the inability or unwillingness by police to investigate the cases and arrest the attackers as the main problem.

The agency said many victims did not report the attacks because they were afraid they would be deported, adding that police were more interested in whether the victim was legally in Greece rather than investigating the attack.

"The public interest to prÎ¿secute and respond to acts of criminal violence should take priority over the public interest to control those who remain irregularly in the country," it said.

KUALA LUMPUR: A man who ran a red light along Jalan Bukit Bintang ended up crashing into a passing motorcyclist and instead of checking on the victim's condition, the driver was more concerned with the dent on his car.

The escapade was captured on a dashboard camera by MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong who was in his car behind the driver then.

“I was outside the Yayasan Tun Razak building at around 2.30pm last Friday when the man overtook me just before the intersection.

“I thought he would stop as the light was red but he sped past and crashed into the motorcyclist who was coming in from the left,” said Chong who showed a footage of the incident during a press conference yesterday.

In the video, the man in a white Perodua Alza was seen overtaking Chong before speeding past a red light and knocking down the motorcyclist.

Though his machine was smashed, the motorcyclist was seen walking away from the wreck and lying down by the roadside.

The driver was then seen exiting his car to check on his front bumper without once looking at the motorcyclist.

“It was a really loud bang and the motorcyclist was flung from his bike. I saw the driver getting out of his car but he paid no attention to the man he had hit.

“I stopped to check on the motorcyclist but he did not appear to be injured and he wasn't bleeding,” he said.

Chong advised motorists to be aware of their surroundings and to drive cautiously even if they are passing a green light.

Gang-raped by 10 men

A 28-YEAR-OLD woman went through a horrifying four-hour ordeal when she was gang-raped by 10 foreigners. She had earlier been abducted at a bus stop in Puchong Perdana.

Police sources told Harian Metro that the rapists recorded their actions which took place in a nearby flat unit at around 3pm on Saturday.

The suspects, believed to be Myanmar nationals, also threatened to kill the victim if she lodged a report.

They released her at around 7pm and she made a report at the Puchong police station.

The woman said she was waiting at the bus stop when a car stopped near her and two men, one armed with a parang, forced her into the backseat.

“The helpless victim was taken to a nearby flat, where the other suspects were waiting.

“Two men tied her hands and feet and despite her screams for help, the suspects took turns raping her,” the source told the paper.

Subang Jaya deputy OCPD Supt Tan Ah Chua said police picked three men, in their 20s and 30s, on Sunday and were hunting down the other seven.

I was attacked and no one came to help

I WAS attacked and robbed on Tuesday night by two men with a parang.

The initial few mili-seconds of realising the situation I was in were probably the most terrifying few seconds of my life.

I was opposite Sunway Giza, at a lively well-lit area, when the attack took place.

I let my instincts take over, which in my case was to scream like mad and fight back.

I kept telling myself that if I yelled loud enough, someone would come. There were about 20 people gathered at a lok lok stall less than 70ft away from where I was being attacked.

I figured they would help and told myself to keep fighting, just give them time to react.

Eventually, a second man joined the first and together they managed to strip me of everything I had on me.

This included my wallet, phone, keys, etc.

As they rode off on two motorbikes, I was screaming for help and for someone to call the police. Did anyone help? Of course not.

I could see them all standing around the lok lok van, stuffing their faces and looking at me.

They were actually staring at me, but not one of them had the decency to come up and ask if I was okay.

I am upset at being attacked and pained by my injuries. But the thing that really makes my heart ache is that nobody cared, nobody helped.

I’m sure the robbers’ parents are disappointed and ashamed of their children, but in the same vein, so should the parents of those people who continued eating at the lok lok stall and did nothing.

What kind of society have we become? Is this so common an occurrence that it doesn’t warrant a response?

Thank you for showing me how society has sunk to such a low level. At least I will not expect anything from people in the future.

Downshift braking

Say you're cruising down the highway at top gear (revs in optimal range), let's assume 5th gear for most cars.

The car in front of you some 50 metres away brakes lightly. Instead of tapping your brakes too, you instead choose to engage the clutch and downshift to the next lowest gear (4th gear). You ease off the clutch and watch the revs rise, simultaneously, your cars jerks slightly and slows down.

I'm not sure how many of you do this, but I do this sometimes, even in an automatic (go from D to 3rd or 2nd).

My main question is : Is it bad for the car's engine ? You certainly save on brake pads, but how about engine wear ?

Also, does it consume more fuel since the RPMs rise when you downshift ?

Sifus, please explain .

Nationalistic apartheid in Malaysia

As many in /k/ may know, violent crimes (robbery, murder, rape etc.) committed by foreign workers seem to be on the rise. Also, we have thousands of foreign workers who congest our public transport system and drive up the price of our essential items (rice, cooking oil etc.).

In general, it can be said that most average Malaysians do not welcome their presence apart from when they are hard at work.

Would you as a Malaysian support such a system as outlined below ?

Assumption: The government is supportive of the plan and is not actively trying to turn these workers in "citizens" to garner votes.

1.) Set up a Ministry of Foreign Labor (MOFL)

This ministry will be government run with civilian oversight (A civilian board will regulate the activities of this Ministry)

2.) Classify foreign workers into several classes :

Class A - These workers have to work in Malaysian populated areas. (Security guards, shop assistants, mamak workers etc.)
Class B - These workers labour in factories.
Class C - These workers labour at construction sites.

All workers coming in must be registered and given a temporary Foreign Identification Card (FIC)

3.) Designate foreign worker zones

Class B and C Zones

Foreign workers are confined to these zones ONLY. They are not allowed out unless they obtain a permit.
They shall have cheaply built, functional housing with basic amenities. Construction of these houses will be subsidized by their employers.
Shops can be set up to cater for them that sell goods at unsubsidised or reduce-subsidised prices (ie more expensive than normal) to be regulated by MOFL. Difference in profits will be used to returned to the Rakyat.
These zones should be set up near factories or construction sites. The ones near construction sites should be mobile to move in tandem with construction works.
Increased police presence near these foreign worker zones.
Transport to and fro these zones will be provided by employers.

Class A Zones

Similar to the above but instead, located in Malaysian populated zones (Perhaps in low cost, high density apartment blocks ?)

4.) Restriction of Movement

Foreign workers are not allowed out of their zones unless they obtain a special, time limited pass. These passes will not be issued unless they have a valid reason. Malaysians (Rakyat and police alike) have the right to stop any suspected foreign workers in Malaysian zones and demand to see these passes.
Foreign workers should not be allowed to use all forms of public transport.
Foreign workers are not allowed to own any vehicle whatsoever (Apart from bicycles to be used in foreign worker zones)

I know that this sounds harsh, but it's just a thought experiment can can never be realistically implemented due to human rights issues.

Passers-by go on looting spree

SHAH ALAM: As the driver of a courier lorry lay injured after his vehicle rammed into another lorry, passers-by coolly carted away goods worth about RM800,000 after an early morning accident in Kuala Kubu Baru.

They made off with laptops, cosmetic items, hair dye, bread, car spare parts and medication in the 2.15am incident on Saturday on the North-South Expressway.

Fortunately for the 46-year-old driver, who suffered injuries to his shoulder and right hand, a Good Samaritan later sent him to Hospital Kuala Kubu Baru where he received outpatient treatment.

The vehicle he was driving had rammed into another lorry that was parked along the emergency lane in Kerling.

Selangor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said police managed to nab two men, aged 31 and 26, and retrieved items worth about RM20,000.

“We recovered items like laptops and spare parts when we raided their houses the next day,” he told reporters at the Selangor police contingent here yesterday.

One is apparently a workshop owner and the other, his employee.

“Both tested positive for syabu although they do not have any criminal record,” said DCP Tun Hisan.

“The men have been placed under remand until Wednesday,” he said, adding that police had yet to determine how many others carted away the goods.

“Please be good and responsible citizens by returning the items to the police,” DCP Tun Hisan said, adding that the people’s actions “reflected a negative attitude among Malaysian society”.

Asked if they would be charged should they return the items, he said although that decision was left to the deputy public prosecutor, they could face charges under Section 411 of the Penal Code for possessing stolen goods.
