Malaysian iPhone4(Maxis) for use in Japan?

Hi, I'll be going to Japan soon for studies, and I heard that you can't use a locked iPhone in Japan.
Can someone tell me if Malaysian iPhones are fine to use in japan? Or do I have to unlock my phone here first? Or are all Malaysian iPhones unlocked already? How can I tell?

I already have an iPhone4 and I'm not interested to get a new handset. I'm hoping to get just the SIM card with the basic calling/texting/Internet services.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

EDIT:
Just realized I didn't mention something I should have earlier on!!!
I bought my iPhone from a shop that gave me a warranty with Maxis, so my iPhone is with Maxis, but the sim card I'm using is DiGi!

Sorry and any more help and explanation would be appreciated!!!! Thanks!!
