Beginner's Q&A - Suzuki Vitara 1.6 JLX (A)

Hello guys, how goes? I'd like some advice and opinions on my current ride.

I recently took delivery of an old Suzuki Vitara 1.6 JLX (A), 4 door. Daddy-o recently swapped the Vitara for my junky old Wira, and needles to say, it's been quite a bewildering experience, because this is my 1st experience (in general) with an SUV. So, here are some basic things I'd like to ask:

1. Is it safe to engage the differential while the car is moving? I was driving in sudden heavy rain today, and I felt the urge to switch to 4WD, but I decided to stop before changing it, as I heard that doing it while the car is in drive mode while bust the diff.

2. This Vitara's performance is rather.........how should I put it, lackluster to say the least. I suspect that the kerb weight could have made a big impact on it. Driving it for the 1st time on the highway was a total nightmare as even at 110km/h, I was only able to catch up on the left lane. Is it the same case for most of the Vitara owner's out there?

3. Is it true that the Vitara will have a different road tax rate altogether compared to a car of it's same displacement, despite being only a 1.6L? I've heard that SUVs are a class of it's own, with different rates.

4. Any basic mods that can juice it up a bit? This is tied to Question 2, and I'd like some ideas of what I can do to make it a little bit more exciting to drive. Also, I don't have much luck finding body kits and shops that specialize in 4WD tuning. Can someone point me out in the right direction, especially within the Penang/Kedah region?
