Repair External Hard Disk !

Hi .. I've buy my external hard disk for a year and use the warranty already. So currently , my Hard Disk cant be detected and not just that . The last time i used my external is about 4 months ago and i remember that my files such as MP4 , WMV , MKV , AVI and etc was turned to FILE000.CHK . CHK types of file , i dont really get it but do i need to use any software to cure it ? Cause most of my files are movies/series . So it'll be a waste to throw it away. And i was hoping to find some information on here about how much for the repair and the repair for CHK FILE or maybe software for it . So please can anyone help me ?
