The New Streamyx

Hi everyone, i'm pretty upset with how everyone here has been unhappy with TM's services lately; while i must say that i don't feel like there has been any significant problem with my Internet connection at home (VIP5 Unifi), i don't doubt that many of you are frustrated.

http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1143583
http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1648653

I've read as much of the treads that i can and heard the various suggestions everyone has provided. I've condensed these to a few ideas, and have sent an email to TM senior management (will also email Dato Zam personally once i get enough feedback from this thread) with my ideas of what the community would like to have.

The ideas i've come up with are NOT mine (many others on LYN have proposed them before), but i think they are worthy because:

1. They are reasonable.
2. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Bandwidth is expensive, that's the truth.
3. It corrects the problem i see with TM's marketing of their ISP services.

The following are the ideas (quoted from the email i sent earlier today to TM VPs):

QUOTE

Traffic management in the approach that TM has taken is not ideal and it just goes against all the promises the TM brand has made over the years towards providing Internet services.

Instead of capping or throttling, consider the following alternatives:

1. Remove all caps and throttling, but enforce bandwidth limits strictly -- so if someone is on Streamyx 4MB plan, let them have their 4MB speeds, up to the point where they reach their monthly download caps. Then offer people the chance to buy more bandwidth, say another RM1 per 1GB. Create a web page to manage all of this, including allowing people to see in real time how much bandwidth they've used so far in a particular month.

2. Change your marketing message -- if you're going to cap or throttle, don't use the word "unlimited" when you sell your products. That's borderline misrepresentation, even though i know you protect yourselves via the T&C. Create different packages for different people. For example, if a minority of your customers are taking up all the bandwidth, create a plan for them -- charge them for all that extra bandwidth they are using.

e.g.

Scrap all original "unlimited" Streamyx plans and replace with the following:

Plan 1: 1MB no-cap, no-throttling, 88GB a month, RM88 per month. Once they hit their cap, speed will be reduced to 128kbps.
Plan 2: 1MB no-cap, no-throttling, unlimited bandwidth, RM199 per month (or whatever you feel is appropriate).

I think a lot of the problem you have with your customers now is that they feel that they are being "cheated" by false advertising and promises (don't hide behind the T&C, we both know this is all marketing and positioning).

Remove the doubt and the uncertainty and vagueness, and be more forthcoming and clear about the value proposition of your various plans and products. Tell people exactly what they are getting (without resorting to T&C or FUP hidden messages), and charge them appropriately for their usage.

The VP of Corporate Comms has promised me a full response to the troubles many of you have faced recently, and i'll post that here too once i get it.

Let me know what you think of the ideas above, be sure to add on any further ideas that you may have.

REMEMBER:

1. Be reasonable.
2. There is no free lunch. Don't expect one.

I'll forward all the best ideas to Dato Zam. He strikes me as a reasonable man, and i think he will listen to what we have to say as long as we present it reasonably. No guarantee that he will act on it, but as customers, at least we have exercised our right to speak out.

This is the official response about the current problems everyone's been having from the office with of Izlyn Ramly, VP of Corporate Comms.

QUOTE

Telekom Malaysia Bhd ™ wishes to clarify on our Fair Usage Policy (FUP) and address several comments in the blogosphere on allegations of a ‘hard cap’ for international bandwidth being enforced by TM.

Firstly, we apologise for the inconvenience that our customers are currently facing on our internet services.

We would like to assure all our customers that it is not, in any way TM’s intention to enforce any ‘hard caps’ on our customers.

As a matter of principle, however, TM needs to abide by a FUP to ensure that the network caters to all customers in a fair manner, and this has been in place for a few years for Streamyx which is a contended, best effort service. This means the Streamyx network is catered to be shared by everybody at any point in time to ensure everybody gets a “fair share” of the bandwidth. Currently UniFi is not affected, as it is a new premium service.

The Streamyx “Fair Usage Policy” is available on our website (http://www.streamyx.com/customer_care/customer_care.php?id=customer_care_fair_usage_policy) and it basically describes the list of specific heavy usage activities (like P2P and gaming) that will be managed during peak periods.

As you all know, this kind of bandwidth management or FUP is a global and common telco and celco industry practice. It is already in place in Malaysia amongst the mobile broadband players and aimed at making sure our broadband service is fast and reliable whenever in use. It is designed to benefit all users, especially normal or non-heavy users during peak periods, so that all can enjoy higher and fair browsing and surfing speed.

In general, TM’s FUP and implementation is aimed at providing an optimum internet experience to all Streamyx customers by rationalising the internet speed during peak periods (3pm – 1am).

Of late, our traffic profiles are changing quite rapidly, and we are noticing that network congestion can hit different parts of the country at different times of the day or week. When congestion hits, depending on the usage patterns, customers subscribing to the same package but generating different traffic patterns may experience different levels of service performance.

In an effort to ensure a fair distribution of resources amongst all customers at all times, whenever congestion occurs, TM’s network is able to calculate how many users are active at any given time and allocate dynamically the resources across all customers with active sessions.

In rare cases of heavy congestion, we ensure that no customers may get below a minimum threshold of international bandwidth, but there is no ‘ceiling’ to the bandwidth each customer can get.

The problems some customer are experiencing now may have stemmed post a successful pilot of a new traffic management model we ran a few months before, following which we went nationwide about 3 weeks ago. Clearly there is room for improvement and we are working hard to resolve this.

As dynamic allocation of bandwidth requires some specific settings that need to be fine tuned area by area, we elicit and welcome feedback on the experience in different parts of the country at different times of the day. We have set up a special email account where you can send your readings for our review: impact@tm.com.my effective 1 December 2010.

From our analysis, the current traffic patterns are, for most part, in line with our expectations on traffic management, and the speeds being delivered should suffice for a smooth internet experience.

Where the internet experience falls short, we will further investigate both individual cases and the service in its entirety to address specific concerns that they may be facing, and will respond to these customers directly.

Rest assured, TM takes note of all customer feedback to continuously ensure improved customer experience end-to-end.

From a market communications perspective, the FUP awareness campaign is already ongoing and we will further clarify as to the rules we are implementing – and why.

In fact, a bloggers briefing has already been scheduled for 17 December post our engagement with LYN and Kambingz earlier. About 40-50 selected bloggers will be invited to represent the wider blogger community to keep them abreast with our efforts to improve service delivery and customer experience overall, and to seek constructive feedback on these efforts. We hope to address, or at least start to address many concerns at this forum.

We thank you for your continuous feedback and ask for your kind understanding and patience as we work to deliver on our commitment to service quality and overall customer experience.

TELEKOM MALAYSIA BHD

guys, read the post carefully, look between the lines.

they deployed a traffic management program in the last couple of weeks.

the program basically failed and instead of helping distribute the available bandwidth equally across all users, especially during peak hours, it is throttling everyone on a consistent and widespread basis which is exactly not what was intended.

e.g.

during peak hours, there are 200 users sharing 100MB of bandwidth speed.

the program is supposed to give each user 0.5MB, right?

the program has bugged out and is giving everyone 0.1MB of speed instead, and "reserving" the remaining 50MB of speed unused.

All the grief has been a huge bug, completely unintentional. They are trying to give everyone a good service by evenly distributing the available bandwidth, but they ended up accidentally screwing everyone up.

I have spoken to them directly, and i've suggested a rollback; undo the program they deployed, and take it back for further testing before sending it out again.

It worked during their testing and pilot, but obviously once its out in the open, it fails.

All of this isn't a big conspiracy or whatever, its just a plain old fashion mistake.

Dinner with TM CEO, ZAMZAMZAIRANI MOHD ISA

The online community knows me. I'm Aizuddin Danian, blogger at http://www.aizuddindanian.com/ and http://www.mycigarblog.org/ and ex-GM of LOTH, and long-time member of LYN. I'm not a TM mole or employed by TM in any way. I've been asked to represent us, and i will try my best to do so in an open and honest manner. Don't shoot the messenger, i only bear the news.

Right, partly because of this http://www.aizuddindanian.com/voi/2010/10/...uring-unif.html but mostly because of this http://unifi.athena.my/, and a couple of scathing emails i sent out to Dato Zam and all his senior staff including his Head of Technology, Marketing, Corporate Comms, i've been invited (together with our very own Rizvanrp) for a dinner with the TM CEO on 11 November 2010. Several members of his senior management committee will be present as well.

They have asked me to compile a list of questions from that we want the TM CEO to answer during the meeting.

I am opening this thread to give everyone a chance to submit their question. If it's suitable (meaning, its a reasonable question, no profanity or abusive tone or language), i will copy it word for word, and present it to him for a response.

The questions can be about anything related to TM, however, i think they are concerned about what we think about Unifi and Streamyx in particular.

TM has indicated to me that they are very serious about improving their broadband services, and this dinner is one of the means in which they are getting the ball rolling. It's not everyday that the TM CEO himself is coming to the ground (or at least as close to it as his schedule allows) to get feedback, so i think we really cannot miss this opportunity to ask the right questions and get the answers that we as the paying customers deserve.

EDIT 11/11/2011

Alright guys, dinner is tonight. Unless someone has something really earth shattering to add to this, i'm going in with the following main issues.

I've chosen these issues because i believe that they will have the maximum impact on the majority of us, and its something that we are all concerned about.

1. Pricing of services, especially when compared to what the rest of the world is paying. Either we should get more, or we should pay less.
2. Bandwidth capping -- there needs to be a more elegant solution to this problem, including allowing us to "burst" our bandwidth through buying more "airtime" (cheaply).
3. Customer service -- frustration with their call center (which is, if i understand correctly, an outsourced vendor, not TM staff).
4. Customer engagement -- one of the reasons why we feel as though TM doesn't care about it's customers is because (a) their call center is pretty poor and (b) we never feel that we are able to talk directly to TM. I sincerely believe that if TM hears our voice (rather than sees just the numbers of our voices in their monthly reporting), they will be more serious and pro-active in solving our problems. This dinner is a perfect example of that belief. I spent several months constructively engaging with TM on several issues, some personal with my own experiences with their service and some on behalf of the community such as the Unifi security flaw -- if they don't care, why bother meeting me?

Alright fellas, thanks again for everything. Wish me luck.

I will post up the full report and all the pics for this meeting after it is concluded. Thanks fellas.

EDIT AFTER THE DINNER

[attachmentid=1880532]
That's the official response to a bulk of the questions we asked.

Obviously, some are sidestepping the issue, and some don't answer the question very well, but it's a start, and at least we have in writing from their senior management a document that we can hold them to in the days to come.

Dato Zam was a very gracious host, he said he could only spend an hour with us, but ended up staying for nearly two because he seemed quite interested in what we had to tell him. I got the impression that he is the captain of a very big boat, and just like all big boats, despite what the captain wants, making the boat change direction takes a huge turning circle. He seems to know which direction to take, its just a question of how long it takes for the rest of his boat to catch up.

TM has a new VP of Group Corporate Comms, and she's a real firecracker with some sweet ideas to be more engaging with us in the future. I look forward to many of her initiatives, such as a Blogger Briefing, and also a TM sponsored Tech Council. I think the days when we could claim that TM kept us at arm's length will soon be a distant memory. This lady is bringing TM right into our face, if she has her way. Watch out for her.

The biggest surprise to me and Riz tonight was on the issue of extension throttling. Their Head of Retail, and their senior tech officer looked us right in the eye and said they knew nothing about it. I sincerely believe they were telling the truth, it did seem quite a shock to them. They have promised to investigate.
[attachmentid=1880533]

Is there any way to wirelessly stream video from my PC to be watched on my 42" HDTV?

The problem is that my PC is one room of the house, but my PC is in another room.

I don't spending some money to achieve this i.e. to buy additional hardware. Just need someone to tell me how to set it up and what are the required items.

I have no more lag?

I came back to wow last week. Same old story mostly with the lag in raids and major cities. 800ms+ in cities, and spikes leading to DC in raid.

Especially TOC25 normal -- Gormok = DC (guaranteed), then cannot log back on without insta-DC again. Random DCs and generally lagginess including MASSIVE FPS lag on most boss fights. Anub was like a 3fps lag fiesta.

Luckily, <LoTH> has its own tunneling servers that its raiders can enjoy, and this definitely helped. But still LOTS of random lag, DCs and fps problems. And, the very frequent "server hopping" to find a "well behaved" tunneling server, would often take the joy out of the game.

Imagine in raid, "Hang on, give me 5 minutes, i need to find a good server to switch to". Damn embarassing to have 24 people wait on you.

I think my situation has just about described the scenario a lot of us are facing. Game is somewhat playable, but only if a good tunneling service is used.

So i did some research to find out what the problem was. Ever since the latest patches have been released, many people are feeling the same. My digging revealed some changes i could make to improve my experience. So i made these changes last night for my first togc25 heroic, and OOOOOHHHHBOOOOY did they make a helluva of a big difference.

Here is what i did.

1. Remove Recount. Some guildies said that disabling synching in Recount helps, so if you insist on keeping Recount loaded (or any other combat log tracker), you can type
CODE

/recount synch
to disable it from trying to synch with other players' Recount.

2. Disable Blizzard Combat Log.

Right-click your combat log tab. "Self", "What happened to me", "Everything". Click on each of those, and then click through each of the sub-tabs and disable EVERYTHING. Make it so that NOTHING appears on your combat log.

I had Scrolling Combat Text installed, and that still worked fine even with my combat log off.

3. Install this addon. http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/...on-spam-fu.aspx

This amazing addon allows you to monitor addon message traffic from your raid members. What you want to do is to MINIMIZE this traffic.

For me, making this change was the LARGEST single factor that made everything run so smoothly last night.

Many addons have secret "whisper" programs that we cannot see. They whisper other players in the raid/party for all sorts of information. Pallypower wants to find out who is buffing who, or who needs a buff. Healbot wants to find out if your current heal target is receiving an incoming heal from another source. Gearscore whispers you to find out what your gear is like. DBM whispers you "MOVE OUT OF THE FIRE NUBCAKE". etc etc etc.

The problem is, many of these mods do the whispering extremely inefficiently, thus leading to massive, MASSIVE spamming of your client with data.

A mod like Gearscore (stupidest ever mod ever created) spams you with whisper requests every second ALL the time, and because your client response is pretty large (info about all your gear), thats a heck of a lot of traffic moving between you and the other player with Gearscore installed. Imagine both of you have Gearscore installed. You'll be spamming each other with requests and data. The only way to block the spam is /ignore, but that's something you can't really do in a raid.

WORSE still, mods like Gearscore not only affect the performance of the person who has it installed, it adversely affects the person who DOESN'T have it installed -- the mod spams you with data and requests, and if your connection cannot take the load, then you will DC; the person with the mod installed may have a better connection and therefore may not lag or get DC'ed.

So last night, i ran this mod and found half a dozen people in the raid with offending mods that were practically spamming the raid with data/requests. A raider with just DBM installed has a footprint of just 200-300bytes (multiply that by 25, and its still hardly 5kb of data a second -- most connections can handle that no problem).

The following is QUOTED for emphasis:

QUOTE

But some raiders had footprints of 100kb of data. Multiply that by 6 - thats 600kb of data moving through the raid per second!!!! Thats 600kb extra that your clients need to download, process and respond to. Plus the stress of the incoming data and processing from the actual encounter itselt - its no wonder that ppl DC.

In our raid, the worse offender was Gearscore. It was a massive data spammer. We got everyone to switch it off. The addon lets us know in real-time how much data spam is coming and going, so even when we had to swap raiders later on in the night, we could monitor the newcomers and told them which mods we wanted them to switch off (Gatherer is another big offender).

And that's all i did.

Last night, LoTH tunnels were acting up, so i had to raid without them. I RAIDED WITHOUT TUNNELS. Never thought i'd hear myself say that.

Result: 25man TOGC 400ms smooth as silk throughout the whole night (up to Faction Champs). Had one DC at the end during Anub when we did 25man TOC, but that's to be expected i suppose -- Streamyx still sucks, nothing will change that. But otherwise, one DC the whole night? Smooth gameplay for the other 4 hours? Yes pls.

DISCLAIMER: I don't guarantee that these steps will work for you. I'm just sharing my experiences. It worked for ME and my raid (overall, fewer DCs last night than normal, no doubt thanks to identifying which addons were spamming the raid). If it doesn't work for you, pls don't shoot the messenger.

If this works for you, please help spread the word to your guild and/or other Malaysians who are suffering like we are.

NOTE: My PC is 3-years old. Top of the line back then, but quite dated now. 2GB ram, 7800GTX graphics card. I live in Kota Damansara, my IP address is always 115.xxx.xxx.xxx can never get anything different.

[addedon]October 1, 2009, 9:49 am[/addedon]btw, this is where i got most of the info for this.

http://elitistjerks.com/f15/t40955-wow_per...tweaks_etc/p21/

Didn't bother with the registry hack (coz i'm dumb and dunno how to do it).

A Guide to Warcraft Trading Card Game

Having experienced this game first-hand, i can say that i'm hooked. Its taken some of the best elements of WoW online MMO (pvp, raiding fun, and the search for ever better "loot") and put it into a card game.

Be warned, this is not a game for the faint hearted, or the faint walleted.

With that introduction, this guide seeks to do 2 things:

1. Essential Links --> to all the online resources you need to get started.
2. FAQ (i'll add the FAQ in a day or two)

I hope to make this a "living" document. So if you want to add a link, or add a good question (and answer) to the FAQ, just leave a reply below.

Essential Links

1. Official Upper Deck Entertainment (UDE) WoW TCG website: Link
2. Official Rules and Tournament Play Policies (very important if you plan to a TCG tournament player): Link
3. Official WoW TCG Forums: Link
4. Unofficial Low Yat WoW TCG Forum (where you can find other Malaysian players): Link
5. "WoW TCG Google" - find every single card in this database: Link

*ps. the game is not as complicated as the rules make it sound. Just like WoW MMO, easy to play, but damn hard to MASTER.

Where to Buy

1. Local Store: Toybox (Link) <-- holds weekly tournaments
2. Local Store: Comic's Corner (Link) <-- has regular WoW TCG events
3. Online Store: StarCity (Link) <-- recommended because of their large collection, and because you can purchase single cards from them to complete a deck, or even buy a full deck from scratch
3. Online Store: MTG Mint Card (Link) <-- recommended due to their shipping from HK, great customer service, and very large collection of cards; a little bit more expensive per card wise than Starcity, but cheaper and faster shipping may compensate for this.

WoW TCG Online

- this is a GREAT way to start playing/learning/experimenting <-- can experiment new deck build ideas before actually investing in the $$$ to buy the cards
- you have access to ALL WoW TCG cards in production as you build your deck (more than 2000+ cards and counting)

Download latest version of MWS (Magic Work Station) first: Link

Then download the patch for WoW TCG: Link
(this is the latest version of 5.1, version 6.0 will be released soon)

Strategy Discussions/Resources/Blogs

WoW TCG Scrub (Link)
WoW TCG Player (Link)
UDE News Archives (Link)
WoW Insider TCG (Link)

LoTH is a Malaysian/Singaporean HORDE guild on THAURISSAN (PVP)

Due to RL concerns reducing the playtimes of several key players, LoTH is currently recruiting the following:

1 x Resto Shaman (if you have a decent dps set and would like to dps occasionally, thats a bonus)
1 x Holy Priest

These 2 spots are MAIN (CORE) raiding positions in our MH/BT raid so the following pre-conditions apply:

- preferably attuned to MH/BT or, at least, possessing either the Vashj or Kael vial
- decent mix of T4 and T5 gear
- able to raid at +8GMT for a minimum of 3 hours on Wed/Thurs/Frid/Sun/Mon (thats 11pm server onwards, 10pm once DST ends soon)

If you are interested, send a tell to either Beegeegee (Kushkush alt), Aelline (Imnotresto alt) or myself in-game. If you cant find any of us online, drop me an in-game mail and i'll get back to you asap.

Alternatively, you are welcomed to drop an app here: http://www.lothguild.org/

Thank you.

ps. As we understand that sometimes ppl like to join a guild with a few friends, if you are one of the classes above, and have 1-2 friends of different classes that would like to join together, we are more than willing to consider the application as well.
