Researchers working on China’s Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) say they have managed to operate the reactor beyond a plasma density limit that has constrained fusion experiments for decades. This achievement could help improve the efficiency of future fusion reactors.

EAST, often referred to as China’s “artificial sun,” is a tokamak located in Hefei that uses superconducting magnets to confine ultra-hot plasma. In simple terms, higher plasma density allows more fusion reactions to occur. The problem is that, in most tokamaks, pushing density too far leads to instability, causing the plasma to break down and interact with the reactor walls. This boundary is commonly linked to the Greenwald limit.

The team behind EAST believes the issue is not just how dense the plasma becomes. According to researchers at the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, the density limit is closely tied to impurities entering the plasma, especially metal particles released from the reactor’s inner walls. Tungsten, which is widely used in fusion devices, was identified as a major contributor.

To better understand and control this effect, the researchers developed a model called Boundary Plasma-Wall Interaction Self-Organization (PWSO). They then tested the theory on EAST using electron cyclotron resonance heating along with a pre-charged gas startup method. These changes helped reduce the impact of tungsten at the plasma edge.

With impurity levels better controlled, the plasma was able to move into what researchers describe as a stable “density free zone,” operating beyond the traditional limit without triggering disruptions. The experimental results closely matched the predictions of the PWSO model.

The findings, published in Science Advances, offer new guidance for designing future high-density fusion reactors. While commercial fusion power remains a long-term goal, the work addresses one of the practical challenges that has slowed progress in magnetic confinement fusion.

A Chinese farmer's "anti-wild boar radar" has been deployed on the Russian-Ukrainian front lines; the Russian army plans to use it to shoot down drones.

A couple of years ago, there was a very popular trending topic in China: "Farmers are using Aegis radar to keep wild boars at bay." Many people initially thought it was a joke, but after checking, they found it wasn't. It was a Chinese-made "civilian phased array radar," available cheaply on Taobao and Pinduoduo, and farmers really did use it to monitor wild boars.

Recently, Ukrainian media suddenly broke the news that the Russian army has also begun using this Chinese-made civilian radar on the battlefield. According to them, the Russian army is using two models: FSTH-LD02 and FSTH-LD03. Although this equipment was originally intended for "wild boar defense," it has now become a secret weapon for the Russian army to track Ukrainian targets.

According to Ukrainian sources, this radar can detect nearby moving targets in real time, accurately marking them whether they are people, vehicles, or drones. The Russian military then coordinates with FPV drones to launch attacks. Whether at night, in the rain, or in mountainous terrain, it maintains high-precision detection capabilities.

Interestingly, this radar is mainly sold to farmers in China for use in controlling wild boars, deterring birds, and protecting crops. Farmers typically pair it with DJI drones to create an integrated air-ground wild boar control system. Some jokingly say that China's "smart agriculture" is almost ready for warfare.

In fact, the core advantage of this type of civilian radar lies not in its "militarization," but in its "popularization." Phased array radar used to be defense-grade equipment, costing tens of millions of yuan. Now, China's technological capabilities allow such equipment to be made available for civilian use, mass-produced, and at low prices. Entry-level products can be purchased on Taobao for a few thousand to tens of thousands of yuan. This is something that almost only China can achieve globally.

From a technical perspective, this radar uses a simplified version of phased array technology. It achieves electronic scanning instead of mechanical rotation, resulting in extremely fast reaction times. When dealing with wild boars, it can lock onto group movements in real time; on the battlefield, it can also detect the movement trajectories of infantry or drones.

The Russian military has clearly recognized this. Reports indicate they have purchased large quantities of Chinese-made commercial drones, batteries, and radio equipment; now even "anti-wild boar radar" is being deployed. While these devices are not traditional military equipment, they are inexpensive, stable, and easy to use. Moreover, their large-scale deployment allows for rapid replenishment of battlefield supplies.

From a broader perspective, this trend of "civilian technology participating in warfare" is actually a reflection of China's manufacturing industry. Meta brought in more than $164.5 billion in overall sales for 2024. Last week, the company said that third-quarter sales rose 26% year-over-year to $51.24 billion and that it lifted the low end of its total expenses for the year by $2 billion as part of its massive investments into artificial intelligence.

The Reuters report cited a December 2024 document that showed how Meta each year generates roughly $7 billion in annualized sales from so-called “higher risk” scam ads, which are promotions that are clearly deceptive. Each day, Meta shows users an estimated 15 billion of these higher risk scam ads, the Reuters report said, citing a separate document.

Although some of the documents show that Meta aims to reduce the amount of bogus ads on its platform, the Reuters report also said that other documents suggest the company is concerned that its business projections could be impacted by any abrupt removal of the fraudulent promotions.

A Meta spokesperson said that the company “aggressively” addresses scam and fraud ads on its apps. The projections that 10% of the company’s 2024 ad sales came from bunk ads “was a rough and overly-inclusive estimate rather than a definitive or final figure; in fact, subsequent review revealed that many of these ads weren’t violating at all,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

“Unfortunately, the leaked documents present a selective view that distorts Meta’s approach to fraud and scams by focusing on our efforts to assess the scale of the challenge, not the full range of actions we have taken to address the problem,” the spokesperson said.
