Sources: Authorities seek 2,000 Rohingya for checks after mosque outbreak

Malaysian authorities are scrambling to track down about 2,000 Rohingya men who attended a Muslim religious gathering that has led to a big spike in coronavirus cases across Southeast Asia, a security source and two other people told Reuters.

More than 100,000 Rohingya live in Malaysia after fleeing from Myanmar, but they are considered illegal immigrants. Their status would likely make many of them reluctant to identify themselves to get tested for the coronavirus even if they showed symptoms, other sources, in the Rohingya community, said.

Malaysia's search for the Rohingya highlights the challenge for governments trying to track the virus among communities living without official papers and wary of authorities.

KOTA BARU: More than 500,000 Umno members will attend the Dec 8 rally to oppose the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD), an Umno leader has claimed.

Party supreme council member Datuk Md Alwi Che Ahmad said the gathering, scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur next Saturday, will carry on despite objections by several quarters.

“Let them express their objections and let them give conflicting opinions on the issue. We will continue with the rally as planned.

"This rally is not about haram or halal. It is about gathering to oppose the plan to ratify ICERD," he told the NSTP when contacted today.

Md Alwi, who is also Kok Lanas assemblyman, said he expected many people from Kelantan to attend the rally.

Among those who opposed the rally include Negri Sembilan Mufti Datuk Mohd Yusof Ahmad and Kelantan mufti Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad.

However, the rally's organisers said it would carry on with a “thanksgiving” rally to celebrate the government’s decision.

Pas and Umno have also announced their intention to participate in the gathering.

SUBANG JAYA: The Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple taskforce claims that the fireman who was injured on Monday (Nov 26) was not beaten up, but actually hit by a fire engine.

Taskforce secretary V. K. Regu said in a press conference Wednesday (Nov 28) that there are three videos circulating on social media that shows the fire engine reversing suddenly, with Muhammad Adib directly behind it.

"If you see the video, it shows the fireman being hit by the fire engine as it reversed and he was thrown against a fire rescue van that was behind the fire engine.

"The video also shows that the crowd did not hit the fireman, but actually tried to alert the fire engine to stop and brought the injured fireman to the hospital," he claimed in a press conference at the temple on Wednesday (Nov 28).

He added that the temple taskforce have sent the videos to the authorities and urged the police to investigate what actually took place that night.

Earlier, Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) commissioner Jerald Joseph visited the temple and said the commission would investigate if there were any human rights violations over the past few days.

"We also urge the federal and state governments to resolve this issue swiftly and fairly," he said.

Muhammad Adib was first admitted to the intensive care unit of the Ramsay Sime Darby Healthcare centre after he was injured in the line of duty at around 1am on Tuesday.

He was part of a team of nine firemen responding to a fire at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ 25, where rioters were protesting its relocation.

It was reported that rioters forcefully dragged him out of his vehicle and attacked him causing him to sustain broken ribs, punctured lungs and other internal injuries.

Umno MP Ahmad Maslan has a novel solution for all of those citizens who were waiting with bated breath for the Pakatan Harapan government to abolish road tolls: “Anywhere: Drive through the boom barrier.”

His declaration came after crowd of 50 voters at a recent rally expressed unhappiness at the fact that the government failed to keep their end of their pre-victory promise.

“They said they want to stop toll collection. Did they? I hope there are those among us who are brave. Ram through the tollgate.”

However, Maslan seems to be aware that having citizens run their cars through toll gates might have undesired effects, among them [Ed. Note: Obviously], arrest.

In that case, don’t look for him, because that one is on you, fam.

“How will you do it? [Ed. Note: Don’t] You have to figure that out. [Ed. Note: Save yourself the grief!] If anything happens, you might be arrested and brought to court. [Ed. Note: Duh]”

Manners: Similar to the talk-to-text function on your phone – we all have it, yet we’re not all clear on just how to use it.

Over the weekend, one citizen who reached boiling point over the flagrant lack of courtesy from one woman in the car park a local mall, and took his ire straight to the best place for commiseration: Facebook group of street fights and double-parking grievances, We Are Malaysians.

Behold, the situation:

Yes, turns out one woman reckons that finding mall parking, a weekend sport not for the faint of heart here in KL, is a tag team affair, and left her vehicle to roam the area, looking for a space. We’ll let you know from the jump that this isn’t a thing: You can’t chup (mark) a parking spot with your body. That’s not how it works. It’s car parking, not body parking.

After a short stand-off, where the irate man reminds her that she is not a car, but a person, leading the parking hog insults his level of Chinese proficiency, with both mutually recording each other via their respective mobile phones, after which the woman relents, and goes back to the car from which she came. What drama!

Not all heroes wear capes sir, and thank you for fighting the good fight for manners and common sense.

However, after a deluge of internet reactions condemning her actions, Oriental Daily is claiming that the woman is now lodging a police report over the incident. The very same incident where she called someone stupid for not speaking Mandarin well-enough, and tried to reserve a parking space with her body. Right.

She now “fears for her safety” after the online backlash, but has admitted that she was in the wrong.

Homeless family forced to sleep in car

BUTTERWORTH: A family of six is forced to sleep in the car because they can’t pay the rent. They are also forced to seek shelter at rest areas and surau.

The management of the Housing Project for the Hardcore Poor (PPRT) in Bagan Jermal seized their home two weeks ago, because they owed rental arrears of RM7,000 that had accumulated over the past four years.

“Previously, I did not have problems paying rent of about RM124 monthly,” said Mohd Nasir Mohd Shariff, a 48-year-old mechanic, today.

“I have to take care of my wife and my four children. The youngest is five months old and the oldest is 9 years old.

“I also have to send money to my mother who is taking care of my children from my ex-wife.”

He said he had always tried his best to pay the PPRT management as much as he could afford.

“The eviction notice was served five or six months ago, and recently, the management locked up my house.

“I tried to enter, but was prevented from doing so by three policemen. They ordered me to vacate the house or I would be charged with trespassing.

“This prompted me to talk to the management about settling the arrears according to my capability,” he added, noting that he was only able to pay about RM1,000, but the management demanded that he settled at least half of the arrears.

“I could not afford it. For now, my wife and children are seek shelter at surau, rest areas or even inside the car until I can find a house.

“I know this has caused discomfort, especially to my children, but what else could I do?”

Nasir receives RM350 in financial aid from Zakat Penang and is trying to seek help from the Welfare Department.

“I am glad I earn enough money for food, but I hope the authorities can help us with our housing problem.

“Please help me for the sake of my children. I am not from a wealthy family. If I am, why would I rent a house at PPRT,” he said as he sobbed.

KUALA LUMPUR: A 64-year-old Quran teacher who had forced his sister-in-law to hold his penis was sentenced to a year's jail by the Ampang magistrate's court here today.

Magistrate Haslinda A. Raof meted out the sentence after the senior citizen pleaded guilty to outraging the modesty of the 38-year-old woman at a childcare centre in Pandan Indah here, at 7.15pm on Jan 23 last year.

The woman worked as a babysitter at the childcare centre.

The court ordered for the accused's jail term to run from the date of his arrest on March 16 last year.

In pleading for leniency, the accused asked the court to impose a sentence that could bring him closer to God.

"I am a disabled person and I hope that the court can impose a sentence that can bring me closer to God," he said.

US Air Force bombers and fighter jets have flown off North Korea's coast in what the Pentagon has called a "clear message".

The fleet of B-1B Lancer bombers was escorted by the F-15C fighter jets over international waters on Saturday.

The Pentagon called it an attempt to demonstrate the range of military options available to President Donald Trump.
