Bluetooth Proximity Sensor - Phone with MacBook

Interesting thing to share (taken from my blog) and I hope that it has not been posted before :-)

For the past few days, I have been playing around with some of the possible things that I can do with the Bluetooth function between my laptop and my phone. So I was thinking if I can use the Bluetooth signal of my phone to control my laptop, i.e. when I am within the proximity of my laptop (with my phone in my pocket), say about 5m, it will lock my computer and do some other things and when I'm back within the proximity, the signal will tell the laptop to unlock the system and back to my working desktop. Sounds cool eh? It's like a wireless key to some of the hi-tech cars nowadays where they automatically unlock and open the door when you get near them :-)

So I visited my best friend, uncle Google and see if there's anyone has done that before. I know that the latest Ubuntu 9.04 has the official BlueProximity built-in so that Linux users can use it with their Bluetooth-enabled phones for proximity detector purposes to automatically lock/unlock the computer when the user (with the phone) leaves/returns to the workstation.

As for Windows users, they can have a look at Blue Lock which serves the same function.

But for this post, I will only be discussing on how to do it on a Mac. Basically the program which will be used is Proximity. So before we begin, first you need to download the following programs:

a) Proximity
b) JackSMS

Basically, JackSMS is a program which will trigger an alarm (in terms of a siren through the speakers) if someone moves the MacBook, close the lid or unplug the MagSafe. And when that happens, you can set it to send the image captured using the iSight camera to a defined email address. Not bad eh? :-D

So once you have done that, install Proximity and run it. There will be an icon on the Menu Bar which looks like an 'X'. Click on it to go into Preferences. Under General, set the Monitoring interval to 10 seconds.

Then under Device, you set the device that you want to pair with and do make sure that you turn on the Bluetooth connection on both your laptop as well as your phone. Once you have done that, you can try to click on 'Check Connectivity' just to ensure that both devices are pairing well.

Make sure that the Bluetooth on your phone is turned on too. Here I use SBSettings instead of going deep into Settings to do that :-)

Next, you'll need some scripts to define your status, either 'Away' from the computer or 'Back' at the computer.

For the 'Away' status, save the following scripts as ProximityAway.scpt using the Apple Script Editor.

tell application "System Events"
set itunes_running to (exists process "iTunes")
end tell
if itunes_running is true then
tell application "iTunes"
pause
end tell
end if

-- Set JackSMS status to on, which also lock the computer
tell application "JackSMS" to set jack status to "on"

___________________________________

As for the 'Back' status, use the following scripts and save as ProximityBack.scpt in the same folder as the previous script file.

-- Pause iTunes (might add in fancy fade later)
tell application "System Events"
set itunes_running to (exists process "iTunes")
end tell
if itunes_running is true then
tell application "iTunes"
play
end tell
end if

-- Set JackSMS status to off, which also lock the computer
tell application "JackSMS" to set jack status to "off"

___________________________________

*Codes courtesy of MatHamlin.com.

After that, just make sure that Proximity is using these files for the proximity sensing.

Then, you configure JackSMS to lock the computer when turned on.

Go on!! Have fun now with your new wireless security device :-) Again thanks to MatHamlin.com for the codes and basically everything else.

Any feedback is welcome

Cheers

Adium Failed To Connect To MSN

Haven't seen a thread on this and I'm sure that some of the users are wondering what's wrong with their Adium app. Thought of enlightening everyone on what's going on. Just doing the community some good :-)

Been wondering why your Adium hasn't been able to connect to Adium today (12-1-2009 starting from local time round noon I think)? Wonder no more. I found this on the official website of Adium.

-------------------------
Starting at about 20:00 PST tonight (January 11), Microsoft’s servers have stopped accepting logins from clients that use version 15 of the protocol, including Adium 1.3.2. The Debug Window in debug and beta versions of Adium reveals that their server is failing to find a certificate that it needs when Libpurple attempts to retrieve your MSN Address Book.

In case you’re wondering, this also affects Pidgin, which means it’s definitely not an Adium problem.

There are two ways to connect:

* Use Microsoft Messenger for Mac, the official client.
* Use Adium 1.3.1, the previous version of Adium.

We’re not sure whether this is a temporary server problem or a permanent change that will break P15-using Libpurple-based clients (including Adium 1.3.2) until a future Libpurple release. If it turns out to be the latter, we’ll almost certainly include that Libpurple update in our next 1.3.3 beta.
-------------------------

So for now, as mentioned above, there're only 2 workarounds - MS MSN for Mac or Adium 1.3.1. Pick your selection dear forumers :-)

Here are the links for both programs:

MS MSN for Mac

Adium 1.3.1

Cheers

Kubuntu 8.04 KDE4 Remix

Hi,

Downloaded the Live CD and managed to install without any problem. Grub recognized my Windows and everything seems is working well. Haven't explore the whole KDE4 yet.

Anyone else who had tried this distro and would like to share your experience here? Feel free to do so

P.S.
Download Files with Safari in iPhone

Hi guys,

Would like to share something here and hopefully no one has posted about this before or I'll kena flamed kao kao

We all know that MxTube is able to download YouTube videos and let us watch it offline later. Have you actually thought about downloading files: pdf, doc, xls, gif etc etc off Safari right into your iPhone straight away? I know that Mail is able to download some files and let you view it, but sometimes it doesn't allow you to view the files offline. Not to mention also that docs/pdf opened in Mail can't be viewed in landscape mode.

Now you can! Add the source http://installer.iclarified.com and download the "Safari Download Plugin" off the Installer. Restart your phone and then you are good to download most files off Safari. By default, files will be saved in /var/root/Downloads/.

To view the files, you can use WildEyes (and make sure that you have installed Lighttpd too) and it'll open the files in Safari. And it supports landscape mode!! Much better than PDFViewer IMHO.

Cheers

FAQ Section

Q: Downloaded the file using Safari but when I open the file using WildEyes, Safari still shows me the download page with the green buttons. (this only applies to those experiencing this symptom)

A: This is a minor bug. To view the file(s), completely quit Safari by holding the Home button for 6-7 secs (don't just tab it). Then open the file using WildEyes again. It should work now.

Q: Why can't I delete the file(s) I've downloaded using Finder?

A: This is because the file is saved under root folder. In order to delete the file, you need to have root access and this can be done using 2 ways:

1) Open terminal and login in as 'root' with the default password 'alpine'. Then use the command

cd /var/root/Downloads

rm filename.extension

*Note: You need to do this everytime you delete a file in Terminal, quite cumbersome IMHO, unless you aspire to be a hacker.

2) To cut the hassle and enabling root access for the folder ONLY in Finder so that you can use Finder to delete the file(s) in the folder in the future without going into the terminal, if it makes you uncomfortable. To do that open Terminal and make sure that you have root access, if not, follow the starting line of (1) above. Then key in this

chmod 4755 /var/root/Downloads

With that, you have enabled read/write/delete access to that particular folder ONLY in Finder. Don't worry, it does not mess up the other root folders.

Q: When I open the file that I've just downloaded, it says the file can't be opened due to a wrong file format.

A: To overcome this problem, especially if you are downloading the file off the email server such as Gmail, at the Safari Download Section, do rename the file first with the correct extension (eg. pdf, doc, xls) before downloading it. It's the second green button, below the Download button.
