PETALING JAYA: National diver Cheong Jun Hoong (pic) claimed a truly stunning win in the women's 10m platform individual final at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Jun Hoong became the nation's first ever diving world champion after chalking 397.50 points to come out tops in a starry final field of 12 participants on Wednesday evening.

Jun Hoong, a surprise entry for the individual platform, was ranked fourth after the first two dives but moved to the top spot and never looked back after that.

It was an unexpected comeback for Jun Hoong considering she was the seventh ranked diver in the final based on the results from the semi-finals stage.

Victory was certainly sweet for the 28-year-old from Perak, who had partnered Pandelela Rinong to take bronze in the women's 10m platform synchro on Sunday.

Not only did she win Malaysia's first-ever diving gold medal at the world championships but Jun Hoong beat two top Chinese divers — Si Yajie and Ren Qian.

Si Yajie, the world champion in 2013 and the Rio Olympics silver medallist, settled for silver with 396.00 points.

Ren Qian, the reigning Olympic champion, got the bronze with 391.95 points.

Defending champion Kim Kuk-hyang was sixth with 360.00 points.

Pandelela, who got bronze in the event at the previous edition in Kazan, Russia two years ago, managed ninth place (322.40).

Menu Rakyat 1Malaysia (MR1M) or 1Malaysia People's Menu programme, introduced in 2011 to help fight rising costs, appears to be out of favour among Malaysians, with many eateries which used to offer meals as cheap as RM2, now taking it out of their menu.

Acknowledging that MR1M is difficult to implement because of soaring prices of goods, Malaysian Muslim Restaurant Owners Association (Presma) president Noorul Hassan Saul Hameed said most restaurant owners who participated in the programme could no longer afford to provide cheap set meals to their customers.

He said during the programme's inception in 2011, about 40 members jumped on the bandwagon, hoping to make it as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) but found out later that they could only survive for one year due to rising prices of raw materials.

"Many had stopped offering MR1M even before the 13th general election and started selling an equivalent meal at normal prices.
"We face a lot of constraints, and this included the fluctuating fuel prices. The government asked us to be socially responsible, but many of our members could barely make ends meet," he told The Malaysian Insider.

Noorul said this year, during the early stages of the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST), businesses declined between 10% and 30%, making it even more difficult for restaurants to maintain the quality of food at such a low price.

Furthermore, he said, there were no additional incentives from the government to outlets offering MR1M.

"When things are hard like this, it is difficult continue with the Menu Rakyat because no one wants to do it for free.

"The government, too, is not willing to do it for free, how are we supposed to do it? Often, we will be victimised.

"Restaurant owners are always blamed as the cause of rising prices of food and drinks but it must be noted that we also have to bear any increase in prices by the wholesalers and suppliers," said Noorul.

Presma has close to 3,200 members nationwide.

While others may have slowly phased out MR1M, Ukhwah restaurant in Jalan Medan Tuanku, Kuala Lumpur continues with the programme but with a higher price tag.

The breakfast menu comprising either roti canai, fried rice, nasi lemak, fried noodles or fried kuey teow with teh O is now priced at RM2.50 while a lunch set of rice with either chicken, meat, or seafood with vegetable and air sirap is at RM4.50.
Its owner, Zulkiflee Sariffudin, said he would want to keep on offering MR1M as long as he could while maintaining the quality of the meal.

"It's not easy to keep to the original price because there are many hidden costs that needed to be considered, including operational and manpower," he said.

Zulkiflee said that apart from the MR1M, the restaurant also offered other bargain menus, including RM5.50 for chicken rice, rice with mackerel at RM4, tea and Nescafe at between RM1.50 and RM2.

He said although there were customers who questioned the price increase for MR1M, the majority were able to accept their explanation.

"I believe this programme can still go on but not as cheap as when it was first introduced.

"After all, people do not mind paying more as long as they are satisfied with the food. People are more concerned about the quality of food than the price.”

MR1M was launched in 2011 by then Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs Ministry, aimed at reducing the burden of the people dealing with soaring prices.

The programme, considered as an ambitious initiative, attracted more than 1,000 outlets in its first two months. – July 13, 2015.

The Super League match between the Southern Tigers and The Red Giants will be rescheduled to accommodate JDT-Dortmund friendly.

Barely a week since the controversial friendly game between a Malaysian XI and Tottenham Hotspur, dubbed "the circus game" by many Malaysian fans, where Malaysian Super League (MSL) games had to be rescheduled to accommodate the match, the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) could be under fire again.

Johor Darul Ta'zim FC (JDT) had recently signed a much publicised Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German giants Borussia Dortmund in which JDT hope it will not only increase its worldwide profile but also benefit from Dortmund's technical expertise. The planned friendly, scheduled on the 9h of July at Stadium Larkin in Johor, as part of partnership deal, would come a day after their MSL clash with arch-rivals Selangor, also at the same venue. JDT accordingly requested that the Selangor game be moved. The Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, President of the Johor Football Association (PBNJ), incidentally, was one of the harshest critics of the Tottenham friendly, stating the game non-beneficial.

Reacting to JDT's request (without consulting Selangor), FAM in their wisdom decided to reschedule the JDT-Selangor match, potentially a crucial game in the MSL title chase, to Wednesday, the 15th of July, two days before the Eid when many Muslims would be back in their home towns in preparation for the festivities, not to mention it being mid-week.

Amirudin Shari, the Selangor Team Manager, has indicated he will write officially to FAM in protest of the reshuffling and one suspects fans from both sides would be behind him on this.

100M to repair Terengganu Stadium

The cost of repairing Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium is about RM100 million, said State Chairman of Public Works and Transportation Committee, Rosli Othman.

The amount includes RM18 million to repair the structure and for equipment, RM20 million to repair the electrical system, RM14 million to repair the mechanical system and RM48 million to put up a new roof.

"We are very disappointed with the incident as the stadium was built with 100% funding from the Terengganu government," he said when winding up debate in the state assembly, in Kuala Terengganu today.

Answering questions raised by opposition state assemblymen on action against those responsible for the collapse, Rosli said the project consultants were facing legal action in court.

The State Executive Council (Exco) member declined to disclose the status and identity of the consultants saying it would be prejudicial to the case.

The stadium has to undergo repair after the main roof costing RM292 million collapsed on June 2, 2009, destroying 50% of the structure. – Bernama, April 15, 2014
