I'm a VB coder, now trying to learn Java.

while reading java code, i always encounter with something like:

int instance = (int)Activator.create_new(objParam);

What i can understand from this line is,
1)create an Integer variable
2)by calling method "create_new" from class "Activator"
3)pass in a parameter "objParam" into the method.
4)The method shall then return an Integer type value.

So,my question is. Why cant't it be like this --> int instance = Activator.create_new(objParam); //wrong???

what is the "(int)" after = sign doing anyway??

Is it in Java we have to let the method know what type of object we r expecting it to return?
