When will Malaysia open its international borders?

When will Malaysia open its international borders?
By Adib Povera, Nuradzimmah Daim - February 3, 2022 @ 3:42pm

KUALA LUMPUR: As more countries begin to reopen their borders, Malaysia's efforts in the recovery process for the international tourism sector remains unseen.

To date, the government has yet to make any concrete decision on the matter despite earlier announcing that the country was likely to fully reopen its international borders in January.

Meanwhile, neighbouring countries such as Thailand and the Philippines have allowed foreign tourists to return starting this month, in a bid to create opportunities for tourism players to recoup their losses due the Covid-19 pandemic.

CNN Travel recently reported that the Philippines would also grant entry to visitors who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 from Feb 10, in an effort to boost the tourism sector.

Checks online showed that countries have their own set of entry criteria for travellers, based on their vaccination status.

Most of them allowed entry for fully vaccinated travellers, with additional requirements such as pre-arrival Covid-19 tests. They also made it a requirement for unvaccinated individuals to be quarantined upon arrival and undergo periodic tests.

For Canada, travellers who are not fully vaccinated are required to undergo quarantine, periodic tests (pre-arrival, upon arrival and on day 8). Unvaccinated travellers are also required to submit their travel, contact and quarantine information.

In Italy, travellers are not required to undergo quarantine if they have been fully vaccinated, have recovered from Covid-19, or with a negative PCR or antigen test taken within 48 hours prior to entering the country.

Meanwhile, all travellers entering Turkey must show proof of one of either having been fully vaccinated, recently recovered from Covid-19 or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Vaccinated travellers, however, do not need a PCR test.

https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2022/02/...ational-borders

GDP grew at a 6.9% pace to close out 2021

GDP grew at a 6.9% pace to close out 2021, stronger than expected despite omicron spread

The U.S. economy grew at a much better than expected pace to end 2021 though the acceleration likely tailed off as the omicron spread put a damper on hiring and further hindered the global supply chain.

Gross domestic product, the sum of all goods and services produced during the October-through-December period, increased at a 6.9% annualized pace, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a gain of 5.5%.

Gains came from increases in private inventory assessment, strong consumer activity as reflected in personal consumption expenditures, exports and business spending as measured by nonresidential fixed investment.

The report reflected an overall solid period for the economy after output had slowed considerably over the summer. Supply chain issues tied to the pandemic coupled with robust demand spurred by unprecedented stimulus from Congress and the Federal Reserve led to imbalances across the economic spectrum.

Inflation surged in 2021, particularly in the second half of the year, as supply couldn’t keep up with strong demand, particularly for goods over services.

The U.S. heads into 2022 on uncertain footing, with Fed Chairman Jerome Powell warning Wednesday that growth in the early part of the year is slowing, though he views the economy overall as strong.

To that measure, the Fed telegraphed a March interest rate hike, the first since 2018. Central bankers also expect to end their monthly asset purchases the same month and to start unwinding their bond holdings shortly after.

Those tightening moves come in response to inflation running at its highest pace in nearly 40 years. Data on the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures price index, will be released Friday morning.

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/01/27/gdp-grew-at...ron-spread.html

Malaysia leaps into inflation in 2021 after

Malaysia leaps into inflation in 2021 after December’s 3.2% CPI rise on weather-driven food shortage
Tan Siew Mung
/
theedgemarkets.com

January 21, 2022 12:57 pm +08
Malaysia leaps into inflation in 2021 after December’s 3.2% CPI rise on weather-driven food shortage
-A+A
KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 21): Malaysia’s inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), increased 3.2% in December 2021 from a year earlier mainly due to the rise in food and fuel prices and on base effect, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said on Friday (Jan 21).

The CPI’s 3.2% year-on-year increase in December 2021 had partly contributed to the nation’s leap into an annual 2021 inflation at 2.5% compared to a 1.2% deflation in 2020 as the country contended with factors including heavy-rain-driven food-supply shortage, which led to the increase in prices of vegetables and seafood, according to the DOSM.

"Inflation increased 3.2% [year-on-year in December 2021] mainly due to the rise in food and fuel prices. The increase also surpassed the average inflation for the period 2011 to 2021 [at 1.9%].

"Annual inflation rate in 2021 showed an increase of 2.5% as compared to a negative 1.2% in 2020. The setting of unleaded petrol RON95 ceiling price by the government starting March 2021 at RM2.05 was the main contributor to the increase of the inflation rate.

"Other factors that contributed to the increase in [annual] inflation [included] the rise [in] chicken prices above the 2020 average price. The rise of animal feed stocks in tandem with increasing global prices of grains drove the chicken prices higher.

"The [increase] in cooking oil prices due to the increase in the crude palm oil prices as well as the increase in vegetable prices due to unpredictable weather at the end of 2021 also contributed to the increase in headline inflation. In addition, the termination of the electricity discounts in Peninsular Malaysia which was implemented throughout 2020 also exerted upward pressure to the national inflation for 2021,” the DOSM said.

For December 2021, the DOSM said heavy rains that occurred in several states such as Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor during the month due to the Northeast Monsoon led to the increase in food prices, especially vegetables and seafood.

The DOSM said the increase in prices of vegetables and seafood is attributed to the direct effect of supply shortages due to the weather factor.

"Continuous heavy rains that resulted in floods as well as landslides that occurred in vegetable-producing states such as Pahang also contributed to these price increases and directly contributed to the increase in national inflation,” the DOSM said.

For the fourth quarter of 2021 (4Q21), the DOSM said the CPI rose 3.2% from a year earlier.

In quarterly terms, the CPI increased 1.2% in 4Q21 from the preceding 3Q21, according to the DOSM.

"On a monthly basis, the [December 2021] CPI increased 0.4% as compared to November 2021,” the DOSM said.

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/mala...ation-32-onyear

5,600 believed to have bought fake vaccine certs in Selangor
FMT Reporters -January 17, 2022 5:12 PM

Four men and three women were arrested after a raid on a clinic in Selangor following an investigation into a WhatsApp message offering fake Covid-19 vaccine certificates for RM500 each.
PETALING JAYA: More than 5,600 names of people believed to have been fraudulently registered on the MySejahtera system were found in laptops confiscated by Selangor police last week.

Selangor police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed said four men and three women were arrested after a raid on a clinic last Friday following an investigation into a WhatsApp message offering fake Covid-19 vaccine certificates.

At a press conference today, Arjunaidi said the clinic, which was operating for the past few months, was selling the fake vaccine certificates for RM500 each.

“Police raided a clinic in Selangor and confiscated computer equipment believed to have been used to enter patient data into the MySejahtera system,” he said.

“A search on the confiscated laptops found 5,601 patients had been registered as vaccination recipients in the MySejahtera system,” he said.

Arjunaidi said police are investigating the case under Section 269 of the Penal Code for a negligent act that could spread an infectious disease and Section 22 (d) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

This comes after Terengganu police last week busted a ring believed to be selling fake vaccination certificates, with more than 1,900 such documents confiscated.

The Terengganu commercial crime department said they arrested a doctor at a private clinic in Marang. Six others were detained soon after.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...ts-in-selangor/

China cuts policy interest rate for first time

China cuts policy interest rate for first time since April 2020
Bloomberg
/
Bloomberg

January 17, 2022 10:17 am +08
China cuts policy interest rate for first time since April 2020
-A+A
(Jan 17): China lowered a key interest rate for the first time since the peak of the pandemic in 2020 as a property-market slump and repeated virus outbreaks dampened the nation’s growth outlook. Bonds rallied.

The People’s Bank of China cut the rate on its one-year policy loans by 10 basis points to 2.85%, while net injecting 200 billion yuan (US$31.5 billion) of medium-term cash into the financial system. That’s the first reduction since April 2020. It also cut the rate on the seven-day reverse repurchase rate.

Monday’s move puts China further apart from global central banks such as the Federal Reserve, which are seeking to normalise monetary policies to contain a surge in inflation. It backs up a pledge by policymakers last month that they will act to support the economy after months of deleveraging led to a housing slump.

“The PBOC has accelerated its pace of policy easing in an order to guide borrowing costs lower and to encourage credit supply,” said Yewei Yang, an analyst at Guosheng Securities Co. “The move suggests China’s economic is weak and it will trigger a significant slide in borrowing costs.”

All but three of the 10 economists surveyed by Bloomberg had forecast the rate on the one-year MLF remaining unchanged. Eight expected a full rollover of the policy loans.

The 10-year government yield fell two basis points to 2.78%. The overnight repo rate, a gauge of short-term interbank funding costs, fell six basis points.

Traders have been betting that the PBOC could ease further after it cut the reserve ratio for banks, while lenders lowered their loan prime rate last month.

“Today’s cut indicates that banks would cut the loan prime rate, the benchmark lending rates, for the second straight month,” said Hao Zhou, an emerging market economist at Commerzbank AG. “Chinese authorities are inclined to provide more counter-cyclical support to hedge against the strong economic headwinds particularly as the Omicron risks are looming on the horizon.”

https://www.theedgemarkets.com/article/chin...time-april-2020
