I just married last year and 2019 will be the first year I will be giving angpau for CNY. I was informed that first-time newlyweds must give double Angpau during CNY, so I was prepared to do that.

But just few days ago, my grandma Wai Po (maternal grandmother) suddenly passed away (second wife of my mother's father). She was cremated following Christian funeral rituals.

So I was told by my parents that I should not give or received angpau this CNY. I am kinda worried I may be looked upon as being stingy by my relatives, because this is the first time I am giving out angpau and I should be giving double angpau as generosity.

So I am not sure whether this pantang actually applies? I am buddhist, but my maternal grandmother is Christian.
