Malaysian kantoi at border again

On 23 September 2026, ICA officers at Tuas Checkpoint foiled an attempt to smuggle controlled drugs into Singapore via a Malaysia-registered motorcycle.

ICA officers referred the motorcycle for enhanced checks and uncovered sealed packets labelled as commercial biscuits in the rear box. Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers were immediately alerted to the detection. Upon further checks, a total of about 6,961g of heroin, 1,116g of ‘Ice’ and 1,032g of cannabis were seized.

A 32-year-old male Malaysian was arrested and referred to CNB for further investigation.

On the same day, through follow-up investigations, CNB launched an operation in the vicinity of Tampines Street 83, resulting in the arrest of a 41-year-old Singaporean for suspected drug offences. A search of his residence recovered about 790g of heroin, 602g of cannabis, 127g of ‘Ice’, 51g of ‘Ecstasy’ tablets and 21 g of ketamine, together with cash totalling S$33,086.

Investigations are ongoing.

Under Section 7 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, those who import into or export from Singapore more than 15g of diamorphine or “pure heroin”, or more than 250g of methamphetamine, or more than 500g of cannabis may face the death penalty.

Under Section 5 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1973, it is an offence for a person, on his or her own behalf, or on behalf of any other person, whether or not that other person is in Singapore, to traffic in a controlled drug, offer to traffic in a controlled drug; or to do or offer to do any act preparatory to or for the purpose of trafficking in a controlled drug. If a person is found guilty of trafficking more than 15g of diamorphine or “pure heroin”, or more than 500g of cannabis, he or she may face the mandatory death penalty.

As Guardians of Our Borders, ICA will continue to work with CNB to prevent attempts to smuggle drugs across our borders. ICA will also continue to conduct security checks at the checkpoints to prevent attempts to smuggle undesirable persons, weapons, explosives and other contrabands across our borders.

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 9): Singapore-based data centre developer Empyrion Digital has secured the green light to construct a hyperscale data centre campus in Johor, marking its first foray into Malaysia amid the state’s rapid rise as a regional digital infrastructure hotspot.

Empyrion Digital announced on Tuesday that it has received regulatory approval for both its Electricity Supply Agreement and Data Centre Task Force application for the development.

"Malaysia has emerged as a key destination for hyperscale data centres, driven by strong digital transformation, favourable infrastructure, and government support," the company's chief executive officer Mark Fong said in a statement.

Johor will become new norm soon.
