Taichung, March 16 (CNA) A Malaysian couple has been sentenced to life imprisonment for smuggling 14 kilograms of heroin into Taiwan in 2023, according to the Taichung District Court.

According to the verdict, issued on March 12, the couple, Au Wing Cheong (歐文昌) and Ling Mei Chi (林美琪), had agreed to transport heroin for their accomplices in Malaysia, who were to pay 1,700 Malaysian riggits (US$361.36) for their travel expenses and another 5,000 riggits when they finished the job.

The verdict indicated that Au and Ling picked up two suitcases from their accomplices outside a hotel in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur on July 13, 2023 before heading to Taiwan.

The heroin were apparently hidden inside the packaging of a Malaysian gelatin powder product and placed among other kinds of foods and snacks as covers inside the suitcases.

Au and Ling then took the suitcases to board a July 14 plane from Kuala Lumpur to Vietnam where they then took a transfer flight to Taichung International Airport the same day.

When the couple was going through customs clearance, Taiwanese officers detected the heroin in their suitcases, which led to their arrest by the Investigation Bureau.

While the couple denied any knowledge of the drugs, claiming that they were told by their accomplices that they were only helping to deliver Malaysian souvenirs, a judicial panel in the Taichung District Court dismissed Au and Ling's testimonies after combing through their communication history.

Due to the potential threat the smuggled heroin could bring to Taiwan's people, the court sentenced the couple to life in prison under Taiwan's Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act, according to the court.

Alongside the likes of cocaine and opium, the drug is classified as a Category 1 narcotic in Taiwan, which subjects offenders to the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Both Au and Ling may still appeal the case

Death toll of migrant shipwreck off Greece could soar to hundreds

Huge search and rescue effort seeks survivors of migrant boat sinking off Greece as dozens of bodies are recovered
Estimates of the number aboard range from 400 to 750, making it one of Europe’s deadliest shipping disasters

With its human cargo of migrants filling every available space, the battered blue trawler was about halfway from Libya to Italy when its engine cut out in the night.

The vessel wobbled sharply, flooded and capsized. Less than 15 minutes later, it sank into one of the Mediterranean’s deepest points, off the coast of Greece. Hundreds of people are thought to have been on board when the boat went down Wednesday, although authorities have no precise figure.

Rescuers saved 104 passengers – including Egyptians, Syrians, Pakistanis, Afghans and Palestinians – and recovered 79 bodies. And the search went on Thursday for more, with aircraft dropping flares to help search teams.

“It’s one of the biggest (such) operations ever in the Mediterranean,” Greek coastguard spokesman Nikos Alexiou told state ERT TV. “We won’t stop looking.”

The 25- to 30-metre (80- to 100-foot) boat is believed to have left the Tobruk area in Libya, which was plunged into chaos following the 2011 uprising that toppled and killed long-time autocrat Muammar Gaddafi. The instability allowed migrant smugglers to make Libya one of the main departure points for people seeking a better life in Europe.

Migration experts linked the sinking with the European Union’s failure to provide safe immigration alternatives for people fleeing conflict or hardship in the Middle East and Africa.

“We are witnessing one of the biggest tragedies in the Mediterranean, and the numbers announced by the authorities are devastating,” said Gianluca Rocco, head of the Greek section of IOM, the UN migration agency.

https://www.scmp.com/news/world/europe/arti...d-soar-hundreds

Cancer-causing substance found in Bee Cheng Hiang

The Consumer Council in Hong Kong recently released its research on its tests of processed meat snacks from the shelves and one snack stood out particularly – bak kwa from Singapore brand, Bee Cheng Hiang.

Bak kwa is a type of jerky that is salty-sweet and is a popular snack in Singapore, especially during Chinese New Year. And it doesn’t come cheap. Prices can start from S$24 for 250g of bak kwa.

The study in Hong Kong found potentially carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in 13 samples of different meat snacks, with the highest levels detected in Bee Cheng Hiang’s sliced beef bak kwa.

But don’t panic just yet! The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) did some assessments of its own and said that there is no health risk when consumed in moderation and “not in large quantities, on a regular basis”.

According to the SFA, PAHs are formed in the cooking process – when meat is grilled or charred over an open flame and also when PAH particles which are found in smoke settle on the meat surface.

However, at 18.2 micrograms per kilogram, the level of PAHs in the Bee Cheng Hiang bak kwa exceeds the suggested European Union (EU) limit of 12 micrograms, according to the Hong Kong Consumer Council.

It is understood that Bee Cheng Hiang are aware of this report.

A spokesman for Bee Cheng Hiang told The Straits Times that the company was aware of the report but assured that the bak kwa produced at their outlets are in compliance with SFA’s food safety requirements and safe for consumption.

They added, “For consumers with a balanced and varied diet, this is no cause for concern.”

But in the words of the Spice Girls, too much of something is bad. Bak kwa, a processed meat product, is already generally high in fat and sugar content – throw in some carcinogens now and this snack is one for the bad books.

https://coconuts.co/singapore/news/cancer-c...say-no-worries/

Russia and China launch large-scale military drill

Russia and China have launched large-scale military exercises involving several allied nations, in a show of growing defence cooperation between Moscow and Beijing as they both face tensions with the US.

The manoeuvres are also intended to demonstrate that Moscow has sufficient military might for massive drills even as its troops are engaged in fighting in Ukraine.

The Russian defence ministry said the Vostok 2022 (East 2022) exercise would be held until 7 September at seven firing ranges in Russia’s far east and the Sea of Japan and involve more than 50,000 troops and 5,000 weapons units, including 140 aircraft and 60 warships.

The chief of the Russian general staff, Gen Valery Gerasimov, will personally oversee the drills, involving troops from several ex-Soviet nations as well as China, India, Laos, Mongolia, Nicaragua and Syria.

The defence ministry noted that as part of the manoeuvres, the Russian and Chinese navies in the Sea of Japan would “practice joint action to protect sea communications, areas of marine economic activity and support for ground troops in littoral areas”.

Beijing sent more than 2,000 troops, more than 300 military vehicles, 21 combat aircraft and three warships to take part in the drills, Chinese news reports said.

China’s Global Times newspaper noted that the manoeuvres marked the first time that China had sent forces from three branches of its military to take part in a single Russian drill, in what it described as a show of the breadth and depth of China-Russia military cooperation and mutual trust.

The drills showcase increasing defence ties between Moscow and Beijing, which have grown stronger since the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, sent his troops into Ukraine on 24 February. China has pointedly refused to criticise Russia’s actions, blaming the US and Nato for provoking Moscow, and has condemned the punishing sanctions imposed on Moscow.

Russia, in turn, has strongly backed China amid the tensions with the US that followed a recent visit to Taiwan by the US House speaker, Nancy Pelosi.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/sep/...ensions-with-us

A young woman has been allegedly raped by three men on a moving train in Pakistan, in another incident that has shocked the South Asian nation witnessing a rise in sexual violence.

The 25-year-old mother of two children was on board the train last week when she was lured to an empty compartment by a ticket checker and three men raped her, Railways Police chief Faisal Shahkar said on Tuesday.

list of 4 items
list 1 of 4
‘Not a quitter’: The Karachi doctor taking rapists to court
list 2 of 4
Pakistan court bans virginity tests for rape survivors
list 3 of 4
‘Heinous, barbaric’: Pakistan highway rape sparks outrage
list 4 of 4
The past few months have been harrowing for Pakistani women
end of list
Police arrested two suspects on Monday when the incident came to the light and a third one was captured on Tuesday, Shahkar said.

Local reports said the security and administration of the Bahauddin Zakaria Express, heading to Pakistan’s largest city of Karachi from Multan, was in the hands of a private company.

The incident has drawn anger from rights bodies, activists and the public as most people called for stringent punishment to the culprits.

“I wish to see those behind this cruel act hanged by their throats,” a man told Pakistani broadcaster Geo.

In an editorial on Wednesday, prominent Pakistani newspaper Dawn called the incident “a ghastly crime” and questioned why proper security arrangements were not made in the train.

“Another horrific incident of sexual violence has come to light, underscoring how a cavalier approach to security arrangements can embolden criminally inclined men to indulge their worst instincts,” it said.

“[Women’s] safety is the barometer of a nation’s values,” said the editorial.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/6/1/out...on-moving-train

gang raping US woman

MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) — Pakistan's police have arrested at least two people after a 21-year-old American woman reported she was gang raped at a hotel when she was visiting a tourist resort in the eastern Punjab province, officials said Wednesday.

The detainees included the woman's host, who took her to a hotel in Dera Ghazi Khan, a district in the Punjab province where she says she was sexually assaulted this week, according to an initial police investigation.

The woman arrived in Pakistan three weeks ago, according to police. The Associated Press does not typically name victims of sex abuse.

Police say they are still investigating to determine how the woman was lured and taken to a hotel by the two men accused of raping her. The woman earlier stayed at the home of one of the alleged attackers for five days.

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad told The Associated Press that its consulate in Pakistan's city of Lahore was ready to provide consular services to the victim.

“The protection of U.S. citizens overseas is the highest priority of the U.S. Department of State and our embassies and consulates abroad," it said. It said “out of respect for the privacy of the alleged victim, we cannot comment on the specifics of the allegation."

Although sexual abuse against Pakistani women is common, such crimes against foreigners are rare. Many Pakistani women don't report such incidents to avoid stigma in a society where rapists often escape justice because of flaws in the legal system and poor investigations by police.

https://malaysia.yahoo.com/news/pakistan-po...-084722392.html

Amir Hussain
Amir Hussain·Editor
Tue, 12 July 2022 at 3:43 pm
Azlin Arujunah and her husband Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman, both 30, had both been sentenced to 27 year's jail in 2020 after being cleared of murder with common intention by the High Court.
The pet cage which Azlin Arujunah and Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman allegedly their son in. (PHOTO: Court documents)
SINGAPORE — A couple who committed horrific acts on their five-year-old son who later died, including confining him in a cat cage and burning him with boiling hot water, had their sentences overturned on Tuesday (12 July) after a successful appeal by the prosecution.

Azlin Arujunah and her husband Ridzuan Mega Abdul Rahman, both 30, had both been sentenced to 27 years jail in 2020 after being cleared of murder with common intention by the High Court. They were instead found guilty of causing grievous hurt, endangering the child’s life, and other charges, including ill treating their child and voluntarily causing hurt.

Ridzuan was also sentenced to 24 strokes of the cane while Azlin got an additional 12 months’ jail in lieu of caning. Among other things, the trial judge ruled that for the murder charge to be borne out, "common intention" had to be formed before the offence, but the medical evidence showed only “collective injury”.

But on Tuesday, a five-judge Court of Appeal agreed with prosecutors that Azlin ought to be sentenced for her original charge of murder, according to The Straits Times.

The apex court will hear arguments at a later date on whether she should be jailed for life or sent to the gallows.

Meanwhile, Ridzuan was given life imprisonment. The apex court will decide at a later date whether his 24 strokes of caning should remain.

Victim brutally tortured over 3 months
During the trial in 2019, the High Court heard how the victim was brutally tortured at the hands of his unemployed parents in their one-room rental flat at Toa Payoh over a three-month period in 2016 and later died in hospital.

On one occasion, his palm was burnt with a heated spoon just because he ate milk powder.

And when he collapsed after being scalded in October 2016, his parents took him to hospital more than six hours later because they were afraid of being arrested.

The child died in hospital the next day, due to the burns to three quarters of his total body surface area, at the age of five years and nine months.

The court heard that Azlin and Ridzuan, who relied on financial assistance, lived in the flat with the victim and three of his siblings. Ridzuan would also sell items such as amulets, love potions and old currencies on online marketplace Carousell.

In March 2011, when the victim was one month old, Azlin handed him over to a close friend as she was unable to care for him. The victim grew up to call his foster mother “mama” and he would visit his biological parents and siblings occasionally. The victim returned to his parents’ care in May 2015, when he was four years old.

From July 2016, Azlin and Ridzuan physically abused and psychologically tormented the victim. That month, Ridzuan used a pair of pliers with a pointed tip to pinch the boy’s buttocks and thighs multiple times, causing bruises.

The next month, Azlin found biscuits scattered on the kitchen floor and suspected that the victim had toppled the biscuit tin but he denied it. She hit his torso, back and legs with a broom, leaving marks on his stomach and causing him a limp and a misaligned kneecap. She also pushed his left shoulder, causing him to fall sideways and hit his head against the edge of a pillar and bleed.

Sometime in end August or early September, Azlin told Ridzuan to “deal with” the victim. Ridzuan allegedly heated a metal spoon over the stove before placing it on the victim’s palm and causing burns.

‘Cruel and unrelenting’
Between 15 and 22 October, the victim was scalded with hot water on at least four occasions by either or both his parents. The water came from a dispenser that was analysed to dispense water at between 86.5 deg C and 98.7 deg C, with an average temperature of 92.6 deg C.

“On each occasion, Azlin and/or Ridzuan would fill a cup with hot water from a hot water dispenser placed within the kitchen, just outside the toilet. On each occasion. they splashed several cups of hot water at the deceased cruelly and unrelentingly, and with obvious disregard for his well-being and survival,” said DPP Tan Wen Hsien.

“By doing so, they caused the deceased intense pain and severe injury. No medical attention was rendered to the deceased for the extensive injuries he suffered,” the prosecutor added.

On one of those occasions, Azlin grabbed the victim by his ankle to prevent him from running away and then filled up a glass with hot water from the dispenser and poured it over his right leg three times. She then pulled his hand and poured hot water over it four to five times. The hot water splashed over his left arm and chest area. The victim was left limping and in pain, with skin peeling from his hands, arms, chest and stomach. There were also blisters on his chest, left shoulder and right leg.

On another occasion, Azlin splashed hot water on the victim, who then shouted “Kau gila ke apa?” in Malay, which means “Are you crazy or what?”. This angered Azlin and she threw several cups of hot water at the victim over his face, body, arms and legs.

Ridzuan heard the victim shouting and got angry. He also threw several cups of hot water at the victim’s stomach, face and body. As a result of the scalding, the victim had white patches and peeling skin over his face, chin, stomach and body. Pus oozed from his forehead, back and shoulder.

A few days later, Azlin got angry at the victim because he asked her for things. She chased him around the living room, allegedly throwing nine to 10 cups of hot water at him. Some of the hot water landed on his body.

Victim collapsed on floor
The next day, on 22 October, Azlin wanted to bathe the victim at around noon but he didn’t want to remove his shorts. She woke Ridzuan up and he hit the victim with a broom over his head, hands and legs. Still, the victim refused to take off his shorts.

Ridzuan threw several cups of hot water at the victim’s legs and body as the child shouted “don’t want, don’t want” in Malay. Azlin stood beside Ridzuan and continued to shout at the victim to remove his shorts.

As the victim crouched in the toilet, Ridzuan poured hot water over his back and calf area. The victim then fell forwards onto the bathroom floor and stopped moving.

Azlin and Ridzuan only took the victim to hospital after more than six hours. They registered him at KK Women's and Children's Hospital at about 7.55pm. He was admitted and transferred to the Children’s Intensive Care Unit and the hospital contacted the police at about 8.50pm as his injuries were non-accidental in nature.

Police investigators spoke to Ridzuan over the phone at about 5.40am the next day, on 23 October, and arrested him at his home at about 6.55am, before taking him on the same day to the State Courts, where he was charged with causing grievous hurt to the victim by means of a heated substance.

Among other injuries, victim was diagnosed with major burn injury, dehydration, acute kidney injury, multiple facial cuts and a broken nose. He was pulseless by 8.05am on the same morning and pronounced dead at around 9.10am. A forensic pathologist later certified that the victim died from severe scald injuries, with blunt force trauma to the face and head contributing to his death.

Azlin was arrested two days later on 25 October 2016.

https://malaysia.yahoo.com/news/mother-who-...-074308335.html

KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Plantations and Commodities Minister Datuk Zuraida Kamaruddin today said she is not ready to announce her latest political platform, as she first needs to hold discussions with the government and Parti Bangsa Malaysia (PBM).

During a brief press conference at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 following her return from a work visit to Turkey, Zuraida acknowledged that her status is still not finalised with neither PBM nor the government.

“I want to discuss with the prime minister, which still does not have a [meeting] date,” she said, referring to Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

A recording of the press conference was made available to Malay Mail.

Zuraida's return was met with much fanfare from PBM, with the minister gifted flower garland and bouquet in the colour of the party — purple — and a banner hailing her as “Ibu Bangsa Malaysia”, or “Mother of the Malaysian People”.

Zuraida had last week announced her intent to join PBM — automatically giving up her membership in Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia — adding that she would soon meet with Ismail Sabri to discuss her resignation from her Cabinet post.

Then on the same day, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that he intends to furnish a new name to replace Zuraida as minister, as the position “was part of Bersatu’s quota”.

Ismail Sabri on May 28 said that Zuraida will remain as minister for the time being, and that he would make a final decision after meeting with her.

https://www.malaymail.com/news/malaysia/202...yet-video/10333
