‘Taken’ TV Series: NBC Orders Prequel Show Based On Liam Neeson Movies

“Taken” is heading to the small screen, as NBC has handed a straight-to-series order on a prequel adaptation of the popular action movies, which starred Liam Neeson, Variety has confirmed.

The TV show hails from Luc Besson, who wrote the original feature franchise, and search for a writer and showrunner is underway. At this point, Neeson is not involved in the project.

The series will follow a young Bryan Mills (the character played by Neeson in the three flicks) who has no wife and kids, opposed to the movies in which his wife and daughter are kidnapped. The show, first reported by Deadline, will focus on how Mills acquires his expert skills that enabled him to become the character known to audiences today. The logline pays homage to the first film’s famous quote: “What I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career; Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.”

The “Taken” prequel hails from Universal TV and Besson’s EuropaCorp. Besson will exec produce, along with Matthew Gross, Edouard de Vesinne and Thomas Anargyros of EuropaCorp.

“Taken” first premiered in 2008, and was a surprise box-office hit, resulting in two sequel series in 2012 and 2014. The franchise turned Neeson into a favorite action star.

When Marvel regained the rights to Blade back in 2013, talk of another spin at the vampiric franchise has fired up every now and again, often a result of Wesley Snipes dropping wee hints to interviewers about studio meetings. Even though there's no official confirmation on the movie, a new piece of intel suggests the series is headed in a different direction.

According to the folks over at Bleeding Cool there is another Blade on the way, with their sources suggesting Marvel is developing the reboot in response to increasing fan interest. There's just one difference: it won't centre around the Eric Brooks character played by Snipes, instead shifting the titular mantle to his daughter, as was the case in the recently revamped comics run.

While this latest tidbit doesn't come with the studio's seal of approval, it's still an intriguing spot of intel to chew over. If Snipes were to return - and it sounds like he wants to - it would most likely be in a supporting capacity.

The series, already part of the X-Men Comics universe, introduces a new crop of mutant characters born with special powers. Boone will co-write with Knate Gwaltney. Simon Kinberg will produce with Lauren Shuler Donner.

It is not surprising that the studio would want Boone to grow into bigger things. He came out of nowhere to direct The Fault In Our Stars, an adaptation of the John Green novel The Fault In Our Stars. The book had a rabid youthful fan base, but Boone showed a strong feel in bringing youthful pathos to the screen, and while Shailene Woodley was already an emerging star, both Ansel Elgort and Nat Wolff broke through as new stars on that film. The result was a $12 million budget Fox 2000 film that grossed $307 million worldwide. Boone became a hot director right away off that success, and among the projects he has been linked to are adaptations of the Stephen King novels The Stand and Lisey’s Story. He’s also been mentioned as one of the directors Marvel and Sony have been sweet on for the live action Spider-Man franchise reboot. Next up for him is The Vampire Chronicles at Universal, a reboot based on the Anne Rice novels that were turned into Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. The Stand would go after, so The New Mutants is a couple years away.

Said Kinberg of the X-Men expansion with Boone: “We’re so excited to explore this new part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”

Fox has done well mining its X-Men franchise. Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool with Tim Miller directing, and Bryan Singer is directing X-Men: Apocalypse for 2016. James Mangold and Hugh Jackman are also doing another Wolverine installment with Hugh Jackman. Behind those is Gambit, a movie that has Channing Tatum attached to star. Those are the current X-Men priorities but it is proactive of Fox to keep new films in the pipeline and to re-engage Boone, who’s repped by CAA and attorney Gregory Slewett. Gwaltney is also CAA.

Disney bought a script by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek that centers on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, the female warrior who was the main character in Disney's 1998 animated film.

Chris Bender and J.C. Spink (We're the Millers) are producing the new project.

The 1998 film, directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, followed a young woman who disguises herself as a man so she can take her father's place in the army and go to war. With the help of her trusty dragon sidekick Mushu, she becomes a skilled warrior and, eventually, one of the country's greatest heroines. It earned $304.3 million worldwide, earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations and resulted in a 2005 direct-to-DVD sequel, Mulan II.

Disney has been on a roll with its live-action versions of its classic animated films. Cinderella, starring Lily James, has earned $336.2 million worldwide to date since hitting theaters three weeks ago. In 2010, the reimagined Alice in Wonderland grossed a staggering $1.02 billion and when Maleficent, starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic villainess, opened in May 2014, it went on to earn a stunning $758.4 million worldwide.

Disney is also making a live-action retelling of Beauty and the Beast, starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens. Audra McDonald just joined the cast of the project, which will be directed by Bill Condon. It hits theaters on March 17, 2017. And in 2016 Disney will release a new version of The Jungle Book and the sequel to Alice in Wonderland. Finally, a live-action version of Dumbo, which will be helmed by Tim Burton, is also in the works.

Writing team Martin and Hynek met in high school, among other projects, have written for the Know Theatre of Cincinnati and rewrote a script for Amazon Studios.

Fear the Walking Dead is an American horror television drama companion series of AMC's original The Walking Dead series. The executive producers are Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert. The first season will premiere on August 23, 2015 on AMC and will consist of six episodes. On July 31, 2015, AMC renewed the show and ordered fifteen episodes for a second season, scheduled to premiere in 2016.

SYNOPSIS

Living in the same universe as The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead is a gritty drama that explores the onset of the undead apocalypse through the lens of a fractured family. The twist in its transition to the small screen is that instead of cult movie talent, the series will unite iconic TV stars, for what the trade describes as “a new team of highly-skilled heroes who are on a mission to stop a dangerous terrorist.”

Just off the top of our heads we nominate 24’s resident badass Kiefer Sutherland and The Walking Dead sharp shooter, Laurie Holden. Those two know how to tussle.

So far, the adaptation has only received a script order from the network. Currently at work on that initial draft are Ride Along’s Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward and NCIS: LA showrunner Shane Brennan.

Christian Bale will star as late Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic from director Danny Boyle. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin confirmed the decision in an upcoming interview with Bloomberg Television today, adding that the Oscar-winning actor didn't even have to audition for the role.

"We needed the best actor on the board in a certain age range and that’s Chris Bale," Sorkin said. "He didn’t have to audition. Well, there was a meeting."

Bale was among the actors reported to be in contention for the lead role, along with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Bradley Cooper, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The still-unnamed film is based on Walter Isaacson's 2011 biography about Jobs, and shooting will begin within the next couple of months. Sorkin, best known for his writing on The West Wing and The Social Network, says Bale will have a lot of work to do on set, though he's confident in his abilities.

"He has more words to say in this movie than most people have in three movies combined," he told Bloomberg. "There isn’t a scene or a frame that he’s not in. So it’s an extremely difficult part and he is gonna crush it."

Titans | DC Comics Live-Action Heroes on TV

Another week, another DC Comics TV show in the works. This time, the project is on cable, as TNT is near a deal to produce a pilot for Titans – as in Teen Titans.

Variety reported the news, revealing the lead in the potential series would be Nightwing, the former Robin. Variety names Starfire and Raven as other members of the team.

Akiva Goldsman is executive producing – meaning the writer of Batman & Robin is returning to a Bat-connected project. The eclectic Goldsman has been plenty busy since, writing and/or producing films like A Beautiful Mind, I Am Legend, The Da Vinci Code, Lone Survivor and much more. On TV, Goldsman also was a writer, director and consulting producer on Fringe for much of its run.

Marc Haimes (Men in Black II, The Legend of Zorro) will serve as co-executive producer. Goldsman and Haimes will write the pilot together, says the Wall Street Journal.

Warner Bros, under their Warner Horizon Television branch, will of course produce Titans, which, if it goes to series, would join Arrow, The Flash, Gotham, Constantine and iZombie among DC-based properties on the air. This past week, it was also revealed that DC's Supergirl is in development as a TV series and will be shopped to networks soon.

Grayson, as Robin, was of course part of the campy 1960s Batman TV series, played by Burt Ward. A few years ago, the CW was developing a potential new TV show, The Graysons, that would have focused on Grayson before he met Batman. That project never happened, among rumors DC/WB stopped its development at the request of Christopher Nolan, who was said to not want any conflicting live-action Batman-related projects airing while his Dark Knight films were still being made.

Written by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman and executive-turned-scribe Marc Haimes, Titans revolves around the eponymous group of young Super Heroes-to-be from the DC Universe. The action series centers on Grayson (probably best known for his alter ego as Robin), who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new Super Heroes including Starfire, Raven and many others. Goldsman executive produces, with Haimes serving as co-executive producer for WBTV’s cable division Warner Horizon.

WBTV has been mining the Titans characters on the animation side with the kids series Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go! on sister Cartoon Network.

The first image has arrived online from Bill Condon’s Mr. Holmes, in which Ian McKellen stars as legendary sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, in the twilight of his career.

The image was posted via McKellen’s Twitter account, and shows the great detective with a few more age spots, but looking just as canny as ever.

“Over 70 actors have previously played Sherlock Holmes,” says McKellen in the accompanying caption. “Now he’s 93 years old and it's my turn.”

The new film will be set in 1947, where Holmes is living in retirement alongside his housekeeper and her son, an amateur sleuth himself.

Haunted by a cold case from his past, he’s tempted out of retirement for one last go-around, albeit without the assistance of his old assistant, Dr. Watson.

Directed by Condon and co-starring Laura Linney and Zak Shukor, Mr. Holmes will open in the UK in 2015, with an exact release date yet to be determined.

Shazam Confirmed By DC – Will The Rock Be Too?

News broke just yesterday [June 12] that DC would be ramping up their comic book movie output by announcing a full slate of movies leading all the way up to Man of Steel 2 in 2018. Warner Bros. will officially announce the upcoming films at Comic Con in July, but in the mean time we can certainly mull over just exactly what this list is proposing.

Amongst the Justice League centric list, and set for a July 2016 release, is Shazam aka Captain Marvel (no not that Marvel), allegedly the most popular hero of the 1940's. Whaddya know.

More interestingly though, is who exactly the studio will look at for the role. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been circling the DC universe for quite some time and, as we reported at the end of April, might just be the perfect fit. He's certainly got the look, not to mention the build.

Black Adam is the renegade Egyptian villain of the series, who was more recently written into an antihero role by David S. Goyer. This was before Goyer had made the move to writing DC movies for Warner Bros. so if he's on the script here it could prove very interesting.

Whether the actor will be chosen for Black Adam or Shazam- or even at all!- is yet unknown but you do get the feeling he's edging closer to the DC universe. we'll most likely have to wait for Comic Con in July for any sort of news but let us know how you would feel about it in the comments below.

Whatever the case, Shazam is down for July 2016.

The Flash is a television series and a modern retelling of the DC Comics series, The Flash. The series is developed by writer/producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, airing on The CW. The show is a spin-off of Arrow. The series premiered on October 7, 2014, airing at 8pm.

SYNOPSIS

Barry Allen was just 11 years old when his mother was killed in a bizarre and terrifying incident and his father was falsely convicted of the murder. With his life changed forever by the tragedy, Barry was taken in and raised by Detective Joe West, the father of Barry’s best friend, Iris. Finding Dory | Sequel to 2003 Finding Nemo

The 2003 Disney PIXAR's Finding Nemo sequel is back with Finding Dory! Directed by Andrew Stanton, who also directed the original film.

Finding Dory will be focused on the amnesiac character Dory, and will explore the idea of her being reunited with her family. It will take place one year after Finding Nemo in 2004 and be set off the coast of California. Other characters including Nemo, Marlin and the 'Tank Gang' is set to appear in this film.

Universal's Dark Universe Films

Universal’s forthcoming resurrection of The Mummy has taken a step closer to fruition, with the announcement that Len Wiseman will fill the director’s chair.

The Total Recall director will take on yet another remake, with Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman currently working on the script, and according to Wiseman, this version of The Mummy will be significantly scarier than those that have gone before.

“When I first heard Universal was relaunching this, that is the image that popped into my head,” he explains. “The period tale, the old monster… but when Bob and Alex pitched it, there was a great new take and approach, and a very different mummy as well. It’s a darker twist on the material, a scarier version.”

It’s a view that Kurtzman has already been pushing, having previously claimed that the film will take its cues from the ‘30s original, “at its beating heart a horror movie, and then an action movie.”

The studio is apparently extremely keen to get things moving on its latest monster movie revival, with The Mummy expected to come shambling into cinemas in 2014. If that’s to be achieved, production will likely begin next year, meaning we should have some more news sooner rather than later…
