BINTULU: The decision of Sarawak and Sabah to be partners in forming Malaysia 49 years ago has united the country to be one big family, the Prime Minister said.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Sarawak and Sabah did not regret teaming up with Malaya to form Malaysia and that the three regions of the country would never part.

Speaking to some 30,000 people here during the 49th Malaysia Day celebrations last night, he said Sarawakians and Sabahans had shed their blood for Malaysia while helping to fight for Malaya's independence.

Calling for an end to all squabbles and debates concerning which of the dates the Aug 31 Merdeka or Sept 16 Malaysia Day were more significant, he said Sarawak's role in Malaysia was without doubt very significant.

“There is no need to quarrel or debate on the matter. Both dates are equally important,” he said.

“The understanding between state and federal leaders is more important than that of any document.

“There is no need for any new declaration or agreement between Sarawak and the peninsula.”

Sarawak and Sabah with Singapore joined Malaya on Sept 16, 1963 as equal partners to form Malaysia. But Singapore left in 1965.
