Luxury homes gifted by Chinese tycoon sit empty as

A Chinese tycoon who paid for hundreds of luxury homes to be built for the residents of his hometown has been left dumbfounded by their greed and ingratitude, according to a local newspaper report.

Chen Sheng, the founder and chairman of drinks company Tiandi No 1 Beverage Inc, put up 200 million yuan (US$31.9 million) for the construction of 258 luxury villas on land provided by local authorities in the village of Guanhu, Guangdong province, five years ago, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

Each property covers 280 square metres, has five bedrooms, two reception rooms, a garage and a small garden. The development also features a stream with a bridge over it, basketball and badminton courts, and even a stage for hosting traditional operas.

However, although the homes have been ready to move into since the end of last year, they remain unoccupied because of squabbling between villagers over who should get one, or even two.

The report did not say how the properties had initially been allocated, but Chen was quoted as saying that he based the number required on a 2013 census, which said there were 190 households in the village.

Despite there being an oversupply of almost 70 homes, in the years that followed the announcement of the plan, more and more people came forward staking claims to them, with several villagers saying they needed more than one to accommodate their growing families.

The villagers’ reaction to his magnanimous gesture left Chen disheartened.

“As soon as I went back to the village, everyone started making all kinds of demands,” he said. “So I don’t go back any more.”

The report said he has not been back to Guanhu for two years.

In an earlier report, Chen was quoted as saying that as well as building the villas, he would also plant lychee orchards and a large pig farm close to the development to create more than 100 jobs for the community.

The businessman and benefactor even said that the meat processing company he owned would buy the pigs reared on the farm, guaranteeing a market for them.

Yusuf PPIM Dikhianati?

TANDA tanya kedudukan Yusuf Azmi sebagai Pengarah Unit Tindakan Khas Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM) terjawab apabila mengesahkan tidak bersama badan bukan kerajaan (NGO) itu lagi.

Yusuf, 28, berkata, dia mengundurkan diri kerana bosan dan kecewa dengan pengkhianatan yang dilakukan oleh teman rapat dan mereka yang pernah dibantunya.

Menurutnya, tiada sebarang balasan dipintanya, namun tidak boleh menerima fitnah yang dilemparkan terhadap dirinya.

Katanya, pada masa sama dia rasa sangat kecewa sehingga mendorong untuk membuat keputusan mengundurkan diri dari PPIM.

“Fitnah yang dilemparkan terhadap saya sehingga merosakkan imej saya amat memberi kesan... saya tidak boleh terima perkara ini.

“Selain itu, saya keluar dari PPIM bagi membolehkan saya meluangkan masa bersama keluarga yang selama ini sering ditinggalkan untuk keluar berjuang bersama PPIM.
“Isu mengenai pergolakan dalaman juga tidak benar sama sekali, saya amat memandang tinggi Tokki (Datuk Nadzim Johan). Jika ada yang mengatakan ada perselisihan faham antara individu tertentu, ia kekal sebagai spekulasi sahaja,” katanya.

Yusuf berkata demikian dalam sidang media khas di ibu pejabat PPIM di Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, hari ini.

Mengulas lanjut, Yusuf berkata, dia akan memberi fokus kepada program bual bicara berbentuk santai bagi meneruskan perjuangannya.

Katanya, konsep bual santai atau tarbiyah itu akan dilakukan bagi meneruskan usaha untuk memberikan kesedaran kepada masyarakat mengenai pelbagai kegiatan penipuan terhadap pengguna.

“Selain itu, saya merancang untuk membuka sebuah pusat perlindungan untuk kucing, di mana di pusat itu kita akan jaga kucing terbiar dan jika ada yang ingin mengambil untuk dibela, saya berikan secara percuma.

“Saya tidak mempunyai rancangan untuk membabitkan diri dalam politik, kalau ada yang berkata demikian, ia sama sekali tidak benar," katanya.

Sementara itu, Ketua Aktivis PPIM Datuk Nadzim Johan berkata, pihaknya menghormati keputusan yang dibuat oleh Yusuf.

Katanya, dia mengharapkan keputusan yang dibuat itu memberi manfaat kepada kedua-dua belah pihak.

“Perjuangan kami akan diteruskan seperti biasa, dan Yusuf akan tetap menyelesaikan aduan yang diterima sebelum ini.

“Selepas ini akan ada rasa kosong setiap kali kami keluar untuk berjuang, tiada lagi sosok orang yang selalu tampil tanpa gentar untuk berhadapan dengan apa jua cabaran,” katanya.

Sebelum ini, timbul tanda tanya mengenai status Yusuf bersama PPIM yang disertainya sejak lapan tahun lalu selepas sebuah portal berita melaporkan Nadzim sebagai berkata, Yusuf tidak lagi terbabit secara langsung dengan PPIM pada 16 Mac lalu.

Yusuf dikatakan tidak sehaluan dengan gerak kerja NGO itu dalam memperjuangkan nasib pengguna.

Antara kes yang dikendalikan Yusuf sehingga ada yang menganggap aktivis itu sebagai wira dan ikon pengguna adalah serbuan ke atas premis pajakan kereta di Kajang, dan isu penipuan skim perumahan.

Yusuf juga aktif memperjuangkan gerakan perangi Along serta kegiatan penipuan gores dan menang.

Selain bertindak selaku Pengarah Unit Tindakan Khas PPIM, Yusuf juga menjadi Ketua Sekretariat Persatuan Anak Muda Islam Malaysia dan Persatuan Pengguna Semboyan 1Malaysia serta aktif dalam Gerakan Banteras Aktiviti Haram.

The search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 is due to be back on a week from today, with the head of the underwater survey company conducting it saying it has “a realistic prospect of finding it.”

In an exclusive interview with The Australian ahead of the signing tonight of a contract with the Malaysian government, Ocean Infinity chief executive Oliver Plunkett said the ship Seabed Constructor was expected to be on station in the search zone in the southern Indian Ocean on January 17.

“It will launch almost instantly,” Mr Plunkett said, referring to the eight Autonomous Underwater Vehicles, or torpedo-like unmanned mini-submarines with side-scan sonar which Ocean Infinity will use to try to locate wreckage of the Boeing 777 at great depths.

On the way from its last port of call in Durban, Mr Plunkett said, the crew and scientists had conducted some trial dives of the AUVs.

“We have had some pretty good results, as far as I can tell, a dive down to 5,800 metres, which is pretty cool.”

Mr Plunkett said the search would first concentrate on areas identified by Australian authorities and scientists as the most likely based on their “ghost flight” and “death dive” theory that the plane’s pilots were incapacitated at the end of the flight and it crashed down rapidly after fuel exhaustion.

But if it is not found there, Mr Plunkett said, it was possible to divert the Seabed Constructor to another target zone preferred by international airline captains Byron Bailey and Simon Hardy, who believe a rogue pilot hijacked his own aircraft and flew it to the end, ditching it.

“I wouldn’t rule it out,” Mr Plunkett said.

“We are ultimately providing a service to the government of Malaysia.”

MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014 on a scheduled flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board, mainly Chinese nationals.

Radio contact ended about 40 minutes into the flight, when the aircraft turned around and headed back over Malaysia to the Andaman Sea, then on a long track south, with its radar transponder turned off.

A two-year, $200 million search led by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau at the request of Malaysia failed to find a trace of the aircraft in a 120,000 sq km search zone, and that survey ended a year ago.

Ocean Infinity, a Houston, Texas-based ocean survey outfit owned by a number of British investors which uses cutting edge technology, made an offer to the Malaysian government late last year that it would launch a new search on a “no find, no fee” basis.

Mr Plunkett signed the contract, valued at between $US20 million to $US70 million according to where the wreckage is found, with Malaysian Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai at a ceremony in Putrajaya, Malaysia’s administrative capital.

From the day the search starts, under the contract Ocean Infinity has 90 days to find the aircraft, collecting a fee only if it is successful.

“I think assuming all of the aviation analysis is right, then I think we have a realistic prospect of finding it,” Mr Plunkett said.

The ocean explorer outfit has leased a Norwegian search vessel owned by the Swire group, and equipped it with new “swarm search” technology, simultaneously using eight AUVs to scour the seabed at depths of up to 4,000 metres.

Mr Plunkett said the mission had to move fast to complete the search before bad weather sets in late autumn.

Ocean Infinity will concentrate its efforts on a 25,000 sq km area just north of the original search zone, following breakthrough CSIRO research last August that significantly narrowed down the likeliest location of the plane to three possible crash locations within a 5000sq km box.

CSIRO scientists say the research was the result of methodical investigation _ including drift analysis of evidence as it washed up on distant shores: first a sheered MH370 flaperon on Reunion Island and then a piece of the aircraft wing in Tanzania.

Ocean Infinity has a staff of 45, of which nearly half are on the Seabed Constructor.
