I want to learn to play the guitar but I have totally no music education. Can advise how to start? Self learn if possible. Don't want attend classes.

Also what type of guitar and the budget range would you suggest for a beginner with zero knowledge?

Jho Low allegedly siphoned off US$700 million from 1MDB, says website

Businessman Jho Low orchestrated the 2009 joint venture between 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) and PetroSaudi International to allegedly siphon off US$700 million from the strategic development fund, whistleblower website Sarawak Report has claimed.

According to copies of the PetroSaudi loan agreement obtained by Sarawak Report, the US$700 million had been loaned from PetroSaudi Caymans Holdings to the 1MDB PetroSaudi joint venture company on September 25, 2009.

“However, there is no evidence to suggest that this ‘loan’ was anything apart from an entirely contrived transaction between two arms of PetroSaudi, a company with very little working capital.

“Three days later, 1MDB was committed to pay it back in hard currency,” it said.

On September 29, 2009, PetroSaudi CEO Tarek Obaid issued a letter of demand to 1MDB PetroSaudi Limited for US$700 million be credited to account number 11116073, at RBS Coutts Bank Ltd in Zurich, Switzerland.

Sarawak Report claimed that the account was registered under a company called Good Star Limited, which was controlled by Low.

High car prices to remain as Putrajaya says no to revision of excise duties

Putrajaya will not be revising the excise duties of cars, despite coming under fire from its critics that the tax is the main reason for high car prices.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed (pic) said the federal government's current budget deficit makes it hard for them to review the tax.

"From the government's position, it is not possible to review the excise duties now.

"But if the fiscal situation improves, the Government is open to the possibility of reducing excise duties gradually," he said in a briefing to the media and automotive industry stakeholders today.

Currently, some 75% of duties collected from the automotive sector come from excise duties.

The excise duties range is from 65% to 125%.

Putrajaya national debt is now at 53.5% of the gross domestic product from 43% in 2008, and close to a self-imposed limit of 55%.

The debt level comes amid forecasts that economic growth will slow down to about 4.5% to 5% and a credit downgrade by US ratings agency Fitch.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak aims to trim the gap from 4.5% of GDP in 2012 to 4% in 2013 and 3.5% in 2014 before returning to a surplus by around 2020.

Mustapa assured that the Government will monitor its fiscal situation.

"If it is positive and the financial situation improves, we're open to lowering the excise duties," he said, adding that he hopes this puts a closure to the contentious subject.

Can an "addendum" absolve a clean audit report?

TL; DR version:
- Auditor issues clean audit report.
- Company announces that WIP worth RM30mil cannot be charged to its customers AFTER the audit report came out.
- This causes company to be categorised as PN17 company.
- Auditor issues "addendum" to its earlier clean audit report to say that investors should NOT rely on its audit report in light of this new situation.

Malaysia denounces French Nutella tax hike

Malaysia's official Palm Oil Council has denounced as "irresponsible" and "badly informed" a French move to slap a 300pc tax rise on palm oil, a key ingredient in Nutella.

"The proposal is based on inaccurate claims that palm oil is bad for health and nutrition, and that Malaysia does not respect the environment," the council said in a statement.

It insisted that palm oil is "a healthy, natural and important product which 240,000 small farmers in Malaysia are proud to produce" and urged the French government to reject the call for a tax increase by Senator Yves Daudigny.

The social commission of France's upper house adopted a proposal last Wednesday for a tax of €300 per tonne of palm, coconut and palm kernel oil used in human food on top of existing taxes of around €100. It would also apply to imported food products.

Given the presence of palm oil in the chocolate and nut spread, the proposed levy has been dubbed the "Nutella tax".

Olam - Valuation of Biological Assets under IFRS

This is a good article overviewing the ambiguity in accounting for biological assets under the IFRS regime. Basically Olam International Ltd, a company which deals in agricultural commodities, also owns plantations, livestock and processing plants. It has been accused by short-seller Muddy Waters to be at risk of insolvency, mainly because of the "aggressive valuation" of its biological assets. Now Olam is contemplating suing Muddy Waters as its shares dropped when this piece of negative news went public.

Valuation of biological assets is highly subjective. I wonder how Malaysian companies will react to this IFRS standard when it becomes mandatory here.

Work shoes that last

Hello /k/, serious question here.

I bought a pair of Larrie work shoes that cost me close to RM200 about 6 months ago. I haven't worn it many times, just the few times that I went for job interviews and when I started my new job in beginning July. However, the depressions on the soles of the shoes are fading now, making them quite slippery on smooth wet surfaces.

Can anyone recommend a longer lasting work shoes brand?

Mouthwash - Halal?

I was using Listerine mouthwash just now and I wondered, is it halal? There is alcohol in it, no? If a Muslim uses mouthwash with alcohol in it and spits it out thereafter, is it halal or haram? I would think it's still haram because a tiny trace of alcohol would've gone inside the body even though it was spit out.

Serious answers only please. Enlighten my ignorance, wanna learn more.
