nesC - programming with motes

lhl_anecar — Fri, 04 May 2012 22:11:02 +0800

I have this piece of coursework where I needed help with.
I was wondering if anyone had experience doing nesC and had experience using a virtual machine to program onto motes, to send and receive messages.. I am almost done but am stuck with the part in red.
Assignment is describe below

Exercise 2 - Protocol GoBackN

The aim of this coursework is to develop an implementation of protocol GoBackN as described in lecture notes.

You will need the following additional resources:

http://www.tinyos.net/tinyos-2.1.0/doc/nesdoc/telosb/

http://nescc.sourceforge.net/papers/nesc-ref.pdf

To start this exercise, you will need a working version of protocol PAR from exercise 1. Seek the help of demonstrators if you have any doubt about your application.

You may edit BlinkToRadioC.nc or BlinkToRadioAppC.nc but you MUST NOT EDIT ANY OTHER FILE. The only exception to this is temporary modification for the purposes of testing. For example, you will need to temporarily modify the value of AM_BLINKTORADIO from 6 to 99 to force Echo to drop messages.

You may wish to look at AMSendReceiveP.nc for ideas on data constructs and program techniques.

Remember that your in BlinkToRadioC.nc application is implementing both the Sender host and Receiver host in protocol GoBackN. As such, while event Timer0.fired clearly implements the Sender host, event AMSendReceiveI.receive serves two functions:

(as Receiver host) to receive data messages and return acknowledge messages
(as Sender host) to receive acknowledge messages and inform fired

If you clearly separate these two functions, your application should eventually work when communicating with other motes.

The following steps should be followed to a fully-functional application. You are recommended to COPY YOUR APPLICATION FREQUENTLY as you must only submit a working application to NESS. You should submit BlinkToRadioAppC.nc and BlinkToRadioC.nc in a zip file and a Word document. The document should show a trace of messages captured from the Terminal (redirect java net.tinyos.tools.Listen to a text file, possibly in the background) and an explanation of how your application works. It must clearly state how far you got in the steps below. You will lose marks if you do not follow these instructions.

Note that many of you will not reach the end of this exercise. Please ensure that you submit your last working version. Dead applications will not attract marks.
Protocol PAR at speed in the absence of errors?

Make sure you set AM_BLINKTORADIO to 6 so that Echo does not drop messages.
To date, your application has sent 1 data message per second so it is unlikely that it will still be waiting for an acknowledge message when it wishes to send the next data message.
You will now modify your application to send 10 data messages as fast as it can. However, you cannot use the event fired to do this as events all run at the same priority level and your application will never receive any messages.
Instead, you must create a task. Each time the task runs, one message will be sent. It will be posted once after initialisation (in RadioControl.startDone) thereafter either when an appropriate acknowledge is received, or when your one-shot timer determines that the saved message must be resent.
Test your application by using java Listen. Listen should show 10 sequences of 4 messages (data to echo, data from echo, ack to echo, ack from echo).
Note that when many students are sending messages, it is possible for echo drop occasional messages. This should be apparent from Listen. If this happens, try a few times then ask a demonstrator to bring a special mote with a different TOS_NODE_ID.

Protocol PAR at speed in the presence of errors.

Make sure you set AM_BLINKTORADIO to 99 so that Echo drops messages.
Test your application by using java Listen. Listen should show more than10 sequences of 4 messages due to timeout and resend (data to echo, data from echo, ack to echo, ack from echo).

Protocol GoBackN at speed in the absence of errors?

Make sure you set AM_BLINKTORADIO to 6 so that Echo does not drop messages.
To date, your application has sent 1 data message at a time. You must now modify your application to send up to four data messages before blocking.
Remember that each sent message must be saved in a different buffer in case it needs to be sent again.
You will also need a different timer for each saved message.
Note that because you are implementing GoBackN (not Selective Repeat), you do not need to buffer messages at the receiver.
You do not need to implement negative acknowledge messages.

Protocol GoBackN at speed in the presence of errors.

Make sure you set AM_BLINKTORADIO to 99 so that Echo drops messages.
Test your application by using java Listen. Listen should show more than10 sequences of 4 messages due to timeout and resend (data to echo, data from echo, ack to echo, ack from echo).
When a message is dropped, you should see the sender carry on sending until it blocks. Timeouts will then cause the resending of saved data messages.
