Guide to Working in the UK (from Summer 2021)

Hello everyone,

I'm Zul, MBA graduate from the University of Chester, UK, and currently South East Asia regional manager for the university. A bit of background for myself, lived 5 years in the UK on two separate occasions. After graduating from my undergrad in Malaysia, I worked in the local sector in an industry that was underpaid with long hours after work (non-paid hours). Got fed up and frustrated with the industry, dumped savings to get a UK post-grad degree (literally took only 2 months from start of application to flying off) and successfully landed a job in a different industry that pays me GBP but stationed me back home.

Anyway, for those who may have missed out news that the UK will implement the Graduate Immigration Route from summer 2021, you'll be able to stay in the UK and work up to 2 years full time (40 hours/week) in any sort of job. Previously, Tier 4 student visas only allowed an additional 6 months in which you could work full time in the UK after you have submitted your final dissertation. Adding to the fact that Malaysians are categorised as low risk and would not need to submit any sort of financial evidence when applying for Student visa, I think when the pandemic gets better, now is the best time to study and work in the UK.

Here is everything you need to know:

The Graduate Route will be available to international students who have a valid student visa at the time of application and have successfully completed a degree at undergraduate level or above at a Higher Education Provider with a track record of compliance.
Successful applicants on this route will be able to stay and work, or look for work, in the UK at any skill level for a maximum period of two years if they have successfully completed an undergraduate or master’s degree. PhD graduates will be able to stay for three years. Graduates will be able to switch into skilled work once they have found a suitable job.
The new route will be launched in the summer of 2021, meaning that any eligible student who graduates in the summer of 2021 or after will be able to apply for the route. This includes students who have already started their courses.
The Graduate Route will require a new visa application.
It will include the payment of a visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge. The exact fee is TBD.

For those who are have been working and aim to either migrate, or advance their careers in the UK, cost usually would be the issue. What's the easiest and most cost-effective way to gain employment in the UK? Well I would suggest a one year master's courses related to your field and search for employment during or soon after your studies. It's true that looking for a one year master's programme which is affordable and from a good ranked university is hard to come by. However, if you've never heard about the University of Chester, maybe now is the best time to look into their programmes.

Some facts about the University of Chester:

Tuition fees before scholarships for Jan/Feb and May 2021 intake starts from £12,450 per academic year. For Sept/Oct 2021, tuition fees start from £12,950 for PGT.
Automatic International student scholarship/discount of £2,000 for PGT and additional £1,000 depending on previous grades (2:1, second upper class and above required). After scholarships, tuition fee for PGT as low as £9,450 (Jan/Feb/May 2021) per academic year.
Master courses are only 1 year.
Won't need to take IELTS, accepts SPM Bahasa Inggeris and SPM O Level 1119. Also offers free in-house English Language Test for admissions and visa.
Ranked Second Best University in the UK in the International Category (WUSCAs 2020).
Ranked 20th for University of the Year by students (WUSCAs 2020).
Currently ranked mid-table at 69th (The Times 2021).
Currently 2nd in the UK for Teaching Quality in Computer Science (The Times 2021).
Chester Business School recently nominated for Business School of the Year at the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.
Top 10 in the UK for Job Prospects (WUSCAs 2020).
