Live Company Announcements

Hi guys,

I've been looking around for a while and wondering if anyone knows if there are any mobile apps / twitter accounts that could instantly alert my mobile when there is an announcement made by a company that I am interested in?

Cuz generally business news portal do not cover every announcement made and well... they need time to write a whole article up which takes time.

Thanks in advance!

How to Ban IP Addresses from a Certain City/State?

Hey guys,

Wondering if any of you know how I can ban a range of IP addresses coming from a certain city/state in Malaysia.

Well, I know how to ban a range of IP addresses in my admin panel but I don't really know if there is a specific range of IP addresses for each city/state in Malaysia at all.

Anyone with any ideas? Thanks.
Visa to Attend Graduation?

Hi,

I'm having this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas.

I have a UK Tier 4 general student visa which expires on 3 February 2013. I am in Malaysia now but plan to reenter the UK on 22 January 2013 to prepare for and attend my graduation ceremony, which is scheduled on 29 January 2013. After the ceremony, I plan to do some travelling around europe with my family, who will also be there for my graduation. We expect to leave the UK on 9 February 2013.

Since my Tier 4 general student visa expires on 3 February 2013, which is before the date I intend to leave, am I allowed to enter as a general visitor instead (not as a student) on 22 January 2013 (and be allowed to stay for up to six months without visa)? Doing this will give me the few extra days' leave to stay until 9 February 2013.

However, I've heard rumours that if I have a student visa that is about to expire, I cannot enter the UK as a visitor because this will effectively be an extension on my leave to remain. Any idea if this rumour is true?

Of course, I know the best idea would be to contact the UK border agency itself. But unfortunately, all matters regarding visas have been outsourced to VFS, which is highly unhelpful as they specialize in replying all emails with pre-drafted templates. I've sent them three emails and each time they replied with information that is irrelevant to my question.

Any help from you guys will be deeply appreciated!

Is my dissertation topic relevant?

Hey guys,

I am in the midst of determining the overall direction of my postgraduate dissertation. Do you think employers take into account what you did for dissertation in the hiring process? Some people say they do but others say that dissertations are purely academic and non-academic employers wouldn't find them practical enough to be relevant. Of course, there's also a third group who say that while the topic is irrelevant, the grades matter because they showcase your analytical and presentations skills etc.

Right now I'm kinda torn between choosing a topic that I am very interested in (but sadly has almost no practical application) and another that I believe would be most relevant (at least theoretically) to my future job market.

Can I humbly request for your opinion? Thanks!

Consultant Qualification-Diversified/Specialized?

Hey guys,

I'm an engineering graduate but hoping to one day become an IT/management consultant... I'm pretty good in programming and stuff but I'm really interested in the inner workings of business and how to make them perform well. I realize that in order to eventually land myself in top consulting firms I would probably need more than a local engineering degree so I'm planning to get an additional masters degree overseas.

I have tremendous interest in Finance and Economics, and am offered an MSc Economics, Finance and Management from the University of Bristol. Here's my question: will such diversified qualifications (Bachelor's degree in engineering, but Masters in Econns, Finance etc.) be not very helpful in my pursuit for a consulting career since I would be no longer an expert in a specific field? I am worrying this because from what I understand consultants need to be very specialized in their fields and will I be in much of a disadvantage when competing with graduates who've been studying a specific field since the very beginning?

Thanks guys for any advice!

Once and for All - Are Results THAT Important?

I think this has been discussed by people for ages, but I observe that most people take a stand just because they are in that position e.g. a sales person saying education is not important and a professor saying otherwise.

I am studying Engineering and my question is this: How important is a good degree, for example, a first class honours, to a potential employer? How high of a priority do they give to the academic achievement of their potential employees as opposed to soft skills, communications and language skills?

Please note that I am asking this from an engineering career's perspective.

Any views by people within the field would be greatly appreciated (and also those outside!), Thanks!

Touchpad lock problem

Hi all,

I'm using an Acer Aspire 4710 lappy and I am experiencing severe inconvenience while typing because my other fingers would accidentally slide across the touchpad and move the cursor to somewhere else...

As far as I am aware, there is no touchpad lock function for this laptop model. Is there any software or way that could solve this problem of mine?

Thanks!

Wierd PC heat problem

My PC is a 2.5 years old, and since last year, it has been generating a HUGE amount of heat. The PC hangs when the temperature reads around 48 degrees, and frankly, it hangs quite often, usually when I'm running hi-graphics applications such as video/image editing softwares and games.

When idle, the temperature hovers around 40-44 degrees, which I don't think is really normal because it has always been around 37-40 degrees before this problem came.

I don't think it's the casing's heat dissipation capability's problem either, because there are a reasonable amount of fans installed on it - 2 (air-in) at the front, 2 (air-out) at the back, and 1 (air-out) at the side.

And here's the real problem :

My room becomes boiling hot whenever I switch on my computer for more than 15 minutes. It makes my air-conditioned room as warm as it is without the air-cond; and hot as HELL if the air-cond is not on.

I deduced that if the room becomes hot, then it's not a casing's heat dissipation problem, since a substantial amount of heat is already being released to the room. I doubt also that it has anything to with dust accumulation, because I dust the motherboard and processor heat sink quite regularly.

What are the possible causes for the computer to generate more heat than it ordinarily does?

Thanks a lot!

P.S.
Sony T20 or Canon Ixus 70? Pls advise"

I'm planning to buy a digital camera at <RM1200. Need it for taking daily photos... (I'm not a pro photographer but i like snapping photos here and there)

Would prefer a nice look and anti-shake features (my hand really shakes when i hold cameras), especially at low-light places. I don't really need, you know, extremely professional sharp/night images, just a balance between style and quality would make me really happy.

I'm currently considering Sony T20 or Canon Ixus 70. I think Sony has a better look but some of my friends say canon has better stabilization/night shots... They might be wrong, of course.

Please give me a bit of opinions, I'll greatly appreciate it!! Thanks!!
