Here’s why the pilot of Enola Gay had no regrets about dropping the first atom bomb

On August 6, 1945, the B-29 Superfortress bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

It was the first atomic-bomb attack in history and destroyed the city. It is thought to have killed 80,000 people immediately, with tens of thousands more dying later of radiation sickness and injuries.

Japan surrendered after a second atomic-bomb attack on the city of Nagasaki three days later, bringing World War II to an end.

Toward the end of his life, the Enola Gay’s pilot, Paul W. Tibbets Jr., was unrepentant. “I thought, yes, we’re going to kill a lot of people, but by God we’re going to save a lot of lives,” he said in 2002.

Early in the morning of August 6, 1945, a US Air Force B-29 Superfortress, the Enola Gay, took off from its base in Tinian, near Guam, and headed for the city of Hiroshima in southern Japan.

It was carrying a 9,700-pound top-secret bomb named Little Boy. Its pilot was Paul W. Tibbets Jr., who led a crew of 12 men on a mission that would change the history of the world.

Tibbets had been named the plane after his mother.

Hiroshima had already been woken by several air-raid sirens that morning, which had proved to be false alarms.

So when the Enola Gay approached at 8:15 a.m., many thought it was a reconnaissance plane. By the time the siren sounded, the first atomic bomb to be used in war had already dropped.

In a blinding flash, and with temperatures as hot as the sun, the bomb detonated. It destroyed a 5-mile radius, killing an estimated 80,000 people.

Tens of thousands more later died of radiation sickness and injuries.

The Enola Gay was 10 miles away when the blast went off, but it still felt the shockwaves. The crew recalled the jolt from the force of the explosion and said it was like coming under enemy fire.

Three days later a second, more powerful atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki, and Japan surrendered, bringing World War II to an end.

Debate has raged ever since over whether the US was right to launch the attacks. Some have argued that the bombings were an inhumane targeting of civilians and that there were other options available. Others contend that such devastation was necessary to force Japan’s surrender and avoid a deadly military campaign through the Japanese mainland.

But how did the explosion weigh with the 12 men aboard the Enola Gay who dropped the bomb that day?

Tibbets and other crew members maintained to the end of their lives that the bombing was necessary, saying it ultimately saved lives.

“I knew we did the right thing because when I knew we’d be doing that I thought, yes, we’re going to kill a lot of people, but by God we’re going to save a lot of lives,” Tibbets told the writer Studs Terkel in a 2002 interview. “We won’t have to invade [Japan].”

The US military had calculated that an invasion of Japan could have cost millions of US and Japanese lives. So, the reasoning goes, the attacks were necessary as an overwhelming show of force to end the war.

As for the loss of civilian lives, Tibbets, who died in 2007, was unrepentant.

“You’re gonna kill innocent people at the same time, but we’ve never fought a damn war anywhere in the world where they didn’t kill innocent people,” he told Terkel.

“If the newspapers would just cut out the s—: ‘You’ve killed so many civilians.’ That’s their tough luck for being there.”

Some of the members later came to express regret and described being haunted by the destruction they caused.

“I pray no man will have to witness that sight again. Such a terrible waste, such a loss of life,” Capt. Theodore van Kirk, the plane’s navigator that day, told an interviewer in 2005. “We unleashed the first atomic bomb, and I hope there will never be another.”

He added: “I pray that we have learned a lesson for all time. But I’m not sure that we have.”

To date, Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the only places to be targeted by a nuclear bomb in war.

Cold War treaties halting the proliferation of nuclear weapons have begun to unravel, however, lending fresh urgency to questions on the morality of nuclear conflict.

So today is my first time my internet is suspended. Just for RM 78 overdue even tho my monthly bill is actually RM 147, hence not even one month overdue...

Additionally, they charge RM 10 for reconnecting fee? WTF?

I asked the CS to waived the fee but they unable to do so. Even the bank happily offer me to waive the late payment fee for credit card the first time I've been charged when I inquire to them.

Is it fair for TM to do this? I can afford to pay just that this time I forgot cus sometime I pay more than the bill amount. I feel like they does not appreciate their customer at all.

On the side note, is there any alternative for unifi other than TIME?
If there is any, I don't mind paying the early termination penalty rather than subscribing to the service that does not appreciate it's customer.

Should I find a new job or stay? (IT developer)

I’m a single young adult with less than 1 year working experience seeking for advice from more experienced persons.

I live and studied in northern region and just started living in KL. It’s just been 2 months in my current job. I’m on 1-year-contract term with a GLC company but thinking to switch to a new job.

Before this, I was working from home for 4 months after ended 6 months’ internship at a small startup company in KL. The reason I stop working from home because I’ve finished my contract and refuse to extend as I was looking for more work exposure since I accept the offer while waiting for my official degree certificate.

On my current job, I can’t really feel any work culture. The project management on my current project is also unclear (compared to my previous little experience). I see myself as junior level but they assign me a project without a senior so the best that I could do is to consult a senior from a different project, but they are busy with their project too.

Since I’m on a contract term, I’m not applicable for OT and bonus which make me earn solely on 3k salary.

I feel like I can easily switch to another job and earn more than that (purely assumption), but my concern is will this affect my reputation negatively?

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to all islands off the coast of eastern Sabah from Kudat to Tawau, including (but not limited to) Lankayan, Mabul, Pom Pom, Kapalai, Litigan, Sipadan and Mataking.

There was a magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Sabah on 5 June 2015, affecting Mount Kinabalu. Limited climbing activities have now resumed. Please see the Sabah tourism website for more information and continue to monitor local media for updates.

There are regular political demonstrations in central Kuala Lumpur. Popular gathering points are Masjid Jamek, Dataran Merdeka (Independence Square) and KLCC. Rallies may be called at short notice. Monitor local media, be vigilant and avoid large political gatherings.

Recent incidents involving tourists include:

On 14 May 2015, armed men entered the Ocean King seafood restaurant on the Sandakan seafront and abducted the Malaysian restaurant manager and another Malaysian national.

On 12 July 2014, gunmen killed a member of the police and kidnapped another at the Mabul Water Bungalows Resort on the island of Mabul, off Semporna.

On 2 April 2014, armed men abducted 2 women, a Chinese tourist, and a Philippine hotel worker, from Singamata Reef Resort. Singamata Island is situated off the coastal town of Semporna in eastern Sabah.

On 15 November 2013, 2 Taiwanese tourists were attacked in their room at the Sipadan Pom Pom Resort, off the coast of eastern Sabah. A male tourist was killed and his wife kidnapped.

You should take great care in the town of Sandakan and along the coastal area south to Tawau. You should also take great care in areas east of Lahad Datu and around Semporna following the confrontation in March 2013 between insurgents and Malaysian security forces. Polis mengesahkan penahanan seorang lelaki warganegara India berikutan tindakannya menampar imam Masjid Negara tengahari tadi ketika solat Jumaat berlangsung.

Ketua Polis Daerah Dang Wangi, ACP Zainol Samah berkata, ketika kejadian lelaki berkenaan yang berada di saf kedua mara ke hadapan dan menolak mangsa sambil merampas pembesar suara sebelum menampar mangsa serta mengambil alih tempat imam untuk mengimamkan solat.

“Siasatan mendapati suspek yang berusia 31 tahun itu seolah-olah tidak waras kerana dilihat bercakap seorang diri.

“Suspek mendakwa bahawa beliau mendengar suara halus yang memintanya untuk menjadi imam semasa solat Jumaat berlangsung,” katanya di dalam satu kenyataan hari ini.
