Flight number is unique. How can 2 MF875 appeared in the sky at the same time. Luckily, not being shot down. Pilot has responsibilities also.
2)	No alternative flight arrangement – Xiamen Airline plan all these and did not provide alternative flight. My case is emergency case.
3)	No compensation – Xiamen airline decline compensation for one day delay.
4)	Decline any written clarification – I phone customer services and Xiamen Airline decline any written clarification of the issue.

Bless my safe flight tomorrow and please kindly advices.
Academic career

I have seen questions about the part-time or full time lecturers and the comparison of the local or overseas lecturers. I prefer to make one step backward to share my experiences in academic career. In the past 14 years, I have been working on the academic career started from Malaysia, UK, China.

Academic career is an interesting career. I don't need to clock in everyday , but I work 24/7. I completed the assigned tasks by university and I spend most of the time working on my researches. Researches? Strictly speaking. It is scientific process to create new knowledge. Several terms are shared based on my personal understanding rather than the definition from dictionary.

University is generally a place belonged to lecturer and students, but being run by a management.

Management is the academicians and funders to decide the direction of university.

Lecturers are the persons to create new knowledge and distribute the knowledge through teaching activities.

Students are the person who spend most of the time to learn the existing knowledge.

Researchers are the person who spend most of the time to conduct research works.

Administrative/support staffs is the clerical staff in departments, faculties, universities including HR, salary office to execute the decision from management.

A top university publish quality academic papers to create KNOWLEDGE and INHERIT these knowledge to student through teaching activities. Students in top university are being nurtured by the first class knowledge and skills. These knowledge are selected and monitored by the top lecturers. Therefore, MNC prefer graduates from top universities. In university ranking, the marks are mostly counted based on the publication (created knowledge), reputation of lecturer (knowledge creator), career prospect of graduated students (knowledge learner). Entire idea of university and academic career is about knowledge.

Academic career consists of three main skills including research, teaching and administrative abilities. If you understand the importance of knowledge, you will know research skills (skills to create knowledge) is the ultimate skills and followed by the teaching and administrative skills.

Research skills are the abilities to create new knowledge. PhD is qualification awarded to those completed the learning process on conducting good research. Obtaining a PhD is the ticket to step into academic world.

Teaching skills is another important skills. Academic staff not only creates new knowledge, but we hold the duties to inherit the knowledge. Teaching is the essential skills to inherit your knowledge to students. Therefore, research universities does seem promising for an academic career.

Administrative skills is the third important skills. A good academician should be able to run a research group, section, department, faculties or universities. He/she should be sensitive with the accounting and law (including policy, procedure and process). Others skills are management, HR, procurement, development, international relationship. Funny part. You can slowly polish your administrative skills, management without strong academic reputation is normally not being respected by international community. You should be a professor before you put serious efforts on the administrative roles.

Lecturers have several levels including lecturer, senior lecturer, Associate professor/ Reader and Professor. As rules of thumb, qualification is the main consideration of level. Generally, you can be a lecturer after completing your first degree. You need at least a master, but normally a PhD to climb up the ladder. Then publication in the TOP journals is the consideration for the different levels.

My milestones

1) After bachelor degree, I start to be a lecturer in college in Malaysia. I obtain my master degree during my lectureship.
2) I started my research works in UK. I obtained my PhD and completed 2 postdoc projects.
3) I worked on research, teaching and administration from assistant professor, associate professor and professor.

It took me about 13 years to reach the professorship.

Academic is more about the knowledge creation and safeguarding the knowledge. You need genuine interests to be knowledge keeper since you need to work for long hours. It is only my personal understanding, other academic workers please add on your views to provide guidance to newcomers.

I have my time freedom, but have to endure the pain (particularly working long hours and frequent travels) to be a knowledge keeper. Hope this help the LYN forumer to better understand the academic career.
Study in China

Hello

It has growing number of China students coming to study in Malaysia. The main attraction is due to the English education with competitive cost compared to US, UK, Australia and New Zealand etc.

At the same time, many China students are difficult to get into the top universities such as Tsinghua U, Peking U, Shanghai Jiaotong U, Fudan U, Tianjin U, Dalian U Tech etc.

Malaysian have plenty opportunities to study oversea. If Malaysian have a chance to get in to the top China university, will you put as a priority choice?

Please share your opinions as a Malaysian studying to choose or not to choose China compared to US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan etc.

Hey sifu

I hope to get advice for the top-up loan.

Three years ago, I bought a property with UxB loan. House price has increased about 30% according to their valuation. House and loan are in joint name with my wife who is a foreigner.

Recently, I have been relocated in China. I will stay there more than 5 years and plan to cash out the money as down payment to buy a simple house.

UxB gave me various reasons not for top up loan. Foreigner problem... foreign income....bank negara policy.... I am doubt with their reasons. What can I do and how can I cash out money for down payment.

Appreciate the advice!!

Josh

10 x SUSTAINABLE OCEAN ENERGY AND WATERWAY DEVELOP

10 x SUSTAINABLE OCEAN ENERGY AND WATERWAY DEVELOPMENTS IN THE STRAITS
OF MALACCA

10 research assistant positions (leading to PhD) are available for the
areas of Marine Renewable Energy and Waterway Protection in Harbour.
The research assistants are expected to work in a team to create new
knowledge in the area. The knowledge need to be scientifically
documented as publication of research paper.

Requirements

• Applicant should have or expect to complete a first class bachelor
degree in engineering and preferable a master degree;
• Applicant must have strong enthusiasm to work in the area of marine
renewable energy and waterway protection in harbour;
• Applicant should have a good publication record or potential to
publish good scientific research papers;
• Applicant must be willing to learn how to conduct a good research
and how to work in a research team;

Background of the project

The oil, gas and energy area from the 12 National Key Economic Areas
(NKEAs) is the first pillar to help Malaysia to be a high income
nation in 2020. The current study proposes the ocean energy
investigations to combat the climate change for a sustainable
Malaysia. The depletion of the inland resources leads to the
exploration of ocean energy in order to compensate the energy shortage
in the world. Ocean energy is an emerging technology in the world
particularly for UK, USA, Canada, Japan and China. However, the
application of the ocean energy is new to Malaysia and has not been
documented in Renewable Energy Act (2011). Malaysia is a country with
the long coastline and therefore Malaysia has potential to harness the
ocean energy. UK believed that the ocean energy could contribute 40%
of the electricity consumption in their country. The current research
coupled the exploitation of marine renewable energy with consideration
of the existing waterway users. The waterway problem due to the
propeller wash is also investigated to include the ship transportation
users in the Straits of Malacca in the ocean energy development.

For those who are interested, please contact Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wei-Haur
Lam via wlam@um.edu.my or 016-328 5530 to enquire the available
topics. Thank you for your time to read through the advertisement.
