USB Drive protection/restriction

Hi sifus,

The scenario is like this :

There is this lab equipment, which I run some testing, and in the end I will need to extract data files from it through a usb port (usually using flash drive). Note that the equipment has no conventional mouse/keyboard interface, and it does not have user interface for other utility function.

The problem is, the boss want us to make sure the instrument is not infected by virus via the usb port. Since we can't install antivirus on it, (and I have no idea how to restrict the usb port on the instrument) so I'm wondering what else can we do on the usb flash drive? How to make the usb flash drive to "copy in" data only? so it will not "copy out" virus to the equipment? Yet, I will still need to open the file and copy the data onto my own PC.

I can only think of formatting the flash drive before plugging into that equipment... but this is prompt for human error as someone else might forget to do so before using the flash drive... any other alternatives?

thanks in advance.
