Sarawak to have Gardenia bread factory

KUCHING: Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Berhad (KTC) will invest RM30 million to establish Gardenia Bakeries (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sanjung Etika Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Yayasan Sarawak.

The collaboration aims to establish a joint venture that combines Gardenia’s expertise in bakery manufacturing with Yayasan Sarawak’s role in human capital and community development.

Under the MoU, both parties are expected to conclude a Joint Venture Agreement and Shareholders’ Agreement within the next three months before the new entity commences operations.

As part of the project, KTC has applied for a 7.56-acre parcel of land from the Sarawak government to develop a Gardenia bread manufacturing plant.

The project is expected to create about 500 employment opportunities, particularly for local graduates and skilled workers in Sarawak.

KTC Executive Director Datuk Dexter Lau said the investment reflected the group’s long-term confidence in Sarawak’s economic prospects and workforce.

“Ten years ago, KTC started its operations in Sarawak without any employees. Today, we employ about 400 Sarawakians, representing 32.5 per cent of our total workforce.
...

The company also plans to introduce a special Gardenia “Sarawak Edition” product range featuring exclusive packaging inspired by Sarawak’s unique identity and cultural heritage.

full story:
https://www.borneodailybulletin.com/ktc-to-...ating-500-jobs/

So, next time Sarawakians who return from Peninsula to their state no need to buy bread at airport liao
Whatsapp to begin offering usernames

WhatsApp messenger to begin offering usernames

The hundreds of millions who use Meta-owned messenger WhatsApp to chat with family, friends or businesses will no longer need to share phone numbers under a coming update, the company said on Monday (Jun 29).

Instead, people will be able to pick unique usernames to share with others, in a move "designed to protect the privacy of your phone number", WhatsApp said in a statement.

Restricting access to phone numbers would mean they are not shared automatically in cases such as being added to a large group chat or messaging a person or business for the first time, the company added.

Additionally, "there's no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you," Meta said.

As with other social media services, the sheer number of people - Meta claims over three billion - using WhatsApp means many may not get their first choice of handle.

The company said it would gradually roll out username reservations worldwide "over the coming months", notifying users in each country when they open there.

Meanwhile, "creators, small businesses and organisations" will be allowed to claim WhatsApp usernames that they already use on fellow Meta products Facebook or Instagram.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/world/whats...ernames-6220311

Cats stolen for Vietmois' food rescued by police

Hundreds of cats stolen for food in Vietnam rescued by police

More than 400 cats destined for slaughter have been rescued in Vietnam after authorities dismantled an alleged feline theft ring, an animal welfare group has said.

Nine people have been arrested in connection with what police described as a "criminal group specialising in stealing and collecting cats", according to the official newspaper of Ho Chi Minh City police.

Officers recovered more than 400 live cats and around 80 dead animals preserved on ice during raids on sites in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City last week. A further 21 cats were seized at a separate facility.

The consumption of dog and cat meat is legal in Vietnam, but vendors require permits that show the origin of animals.
...

Around 40 of the stolen cats have since been reunited with their owners, Humane World for Animals said in a statement on Tuesday.

full story:
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c20yzm58vk3o

China gig workers 320 million

source in Chinese:
https://www.zaobao.com.sg/news/china/story20260607-9169767

Google Translate:
The number of people engaged in flexible employment in China is expected to cross a key inflection point this year, reaching 320 million, becoming an important pillar of the job market. Based on China's total employment of 725 million by the end of 2025, this means that over 44% will be in a state of flexible employment.

Scholars interviewed pointed out that the expanding flexible employment group in China will have a profound impact on workers' rights protection, the social security system, and even the structure of the labor market in the future.

The China New Employment Forms Research Center, jointly established by the Capital University of Economics and Business and the China Employment Promotion Association, released the "2025 China Blue-Collar Group Employment Research Report" last week. Through big data monitoring, stratified questionnaire surveys, and field visits, the report analyzes the latest employment situation of China's blue-collar group.

According to the report, after the number of flexible workers in China exceeded 200 million in 2021, it has grown at a rate of 40 million people per year for the past two years, reaching 240 million in 2024. Last year, it reached 280 million, and is projected to further rise to 320 million this year, accounting for over 40% of urban employment.

The report points out that flexible employment has passed a critical inflection point in terms of scale and is transforming from a "supplementary form" of the job market into an "important pillar."
Malaysia to register refugees, give them jobs

Malaysia moves to register refugees, link those eligible to jobs amid labour shortages
Authorities say the registration system will help regulate the refugee population, strengthen security oversight and improve refugees' welfare.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is stepping up efforts to manage the more than 200,000 refugees and asylum seekers living in the country, with eligible individuals set to be matched with temporary jobs in sectors facing labour shortages.

Since the start of the year, the government has been registering refugees under the pilot phase of its Refugee Registration Document (DPP) programme, which collects biometric and personal data and stores them in a centralised database.

Authorities say the registration system will help regulate the refugee population, strengthen security oversight and improve refugees' welfare.

Home Affairs Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail last month said more than 4,000 people have been processed under the programme so far.

The database could support future job-matching initiatives for refugees aged 20 to 40, connecting them with opportunities in sectors facing manpower crunch, including manufacturing, construction, agriculture, plantations and services.

However, Saifuddin stressed that the initiative, which is being rolled out at immigration depots nationwide from this month, is not a pathway to permanent residency.

Employers hiring them must comply with existing labour laws, including paying the minimum monthly wage of about US$430 and providing suitable accommodation.

Industry players said the arrangement could help reduce reliance on foreign labour, which is often more costly.

full story:
https://www.channelnewsasia.com/asia/malays...welfare-6158101
