KUCHING: Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Berhad (KTC) will invest RM30 million to establish Gardenia Bakeries (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sanjung Etika Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Yayasan Sarawak.

The collaboration aims to establish a joint venture that combines Gardenia’s expertise in bakery manufacturing with Yayasan Sarawak’s role in human capital and community development.

Under the MoU, both parties are expected to conclude a Joint Venture Agreement and Shareholders’ Agreement within the next three months before the new entity commences operations.

As part of the project, KTC has applied for a 7.56-acre parcel of land from the Sarawak government to develop a Gardenia bread manufacturing plant.

The project is expected to create about 500 employment opportunities, particularly for local graduates and skilled workers in Sarawak.

KTC Executive Director Datuk Dexter Lau said the investment reflected the group’s long-term confidence in Sarawak’s economic prospects and workforce.

“Ten years ago, KTC started its operations in Sarawak without any employees. Today, we employ about 400 Sarawakians, representing 32.5 per cent of our total workforce.

WhatsApp messenger to begin offering usernames

The hundreds of millions who use Meta-owned messenger WhatsApp to chat with family, friends or businesses will no longer need to share phone numbers under a coming update, the company said on Monday (Jun 29).

Instead, people will be able to pick unique usernames to share with others, in a move "designed to protect the privacy of your phone number", WhatsApp said in a statement.

Restricting access to phone numbers would mean they are not shared automatically in cases such as being added to a large group chat or messaging a person or business for the first time, the company added.

Additionally, "there's no directory to browse and no suggestions, so people need to know your exact username to contact you," Meta said.

As with other social media services, the sheer number of people - Meta claims over three billion - using WhatsApp means many may not get their first choice of handle.

The company said it would gradually roll out username reservations worldwide "over the coming months", notifying users in each country when they open there.

Meanwhile, "creators, small businesses and organisations" will be allowed to claim WhatsApp usernames that they already use on fellow Meta products Facebook or Instagram.

Nine people have been arrested in connection with what police described as a "criminal group specialising in stealing and collecting cats", according to the official newspaper of Ho Chi Minh City police.

Officers recovered more than 400 live cats and around 80 dead animals preserved on ice during raids on sites in Tay Ninh Province and Ho Chi Minh City last week. A further 21 cats were seized at a separate facility.

However, Saifuddin stressed that the initiative, which is being rolled out at immigration depots nationwide from this month, is not a pathway to permanent residency.

Industry players said the arrangement could help reduce reliance on foreign labour, which is often more costly.
