Hi everyone,

Photograph birds with the experts on Sunday, Oct 25, 2009.

If you think you have the longest lense, here's your chance to test your lenses to the max. Malaysian Nature Society (Perak Branch) is organising a unique event in Taiping to help everyone appreciate birds and witness the annual migration of predator birds over Taiping sky. Malaysia is smacked right in the middle of Asiatic flyway. Million of birds make pit stops in coastal and inland Perak every year to rest and escape the winter. Year end is the best time to witness this phenomenon.

Participation is free. For more information, please log on MNS Perak blog

Thank you.

Step by step on how to wordpress.org-ing

Dear good people,

DESPITE KNOWING nuts about blogging, due to constraint of budget, we started building a blog on wordpress.com platform last year. It was fun and exciting. Hits were picking up and we got lots of wellwishers. Which was great since our main aim is to give urbanites a window into the Malaysian countryside. It is named www.malaysiaupclose.org.

Then last week, someone suggested that we go for wordpress.org and they would advertise with us as donation (as you pros know, wordpress.com has no tolerance for ads). Hence, the epic journey began. With the shallow pockets that we have, we coughed up RM600 for web hosting package by bluehost.com all because it said somethings about "hosting is just a click away". Well, it isn't, as we found later - adoi. OK, we have came this far and were determined to wing it come what may. After a hefty bout of codex readings, googling for "how to" clues and trying not to pull to much hair, we have got these done ...

1. Downloaded Filezilla FTP software
2. Got a web hosting account with Bluehost.com
3. Downloaded and unzipped wordpress.org version 2.6.3
4. Understood that the "wp-config-sample.php" has to be altered with proper db, although not so sure about the "localhost" part.
5. Fiddled with Fantastico and SimpleScript on Bluehost's cpanel but clueless on what is it for
6. Fiddled a bit with MySQL on cpanel, also totally clueless about this

And that was it. We have no idea on how to proceed. Most info trawled from googling points to "how to" articles that were written by seasoned bloggers who omitted the nitty gritty, which is what we are looking for. Other than begging for step-by-step answers on how to complete the installation, we also have other questions ...

1. Can we still use malaysiaupclose.org domain name (currently with wordpress.com) after we activate wordpress.org's blog? If so, how?
2. Is it better to register a new domain name to go with wordpress.org?
3. What is the step-by-step on using Filezilla to transfer files from our PC into Bluehost's MySQL?

We have so much more questions especially in regards to permalinks, themes ... etc but that's another story. Our brain cells can only handle so much for the moment. So, blog gurus, please extend your wisdom and show us the way. We really really appreciate your kind assistance. Thank you in advance.

Hi people,

Someone over Kopitiam thread suggested in that I post this here. I had the opportunity to travel with Chi, the good looking Chinese/Malay mixed parentage host, into the countryside a few days ago and I have uploaded photos to share with everyone at www.malaysiaupclose.blogspot.com

Cheers!

Support Environment & Conservation thread

Dear good people,

I've written to lowyat management this morning suggesting a dedicated branch for environment and conservation issues. This would augur well with forumers who love nature and we all can discuss about heritage, recycling, helping poor Orang Asli, pollution .... etc. A speedy response was provided by lowyat staff and I was recommended to start a thread in this LYN branch to see how much support there is. Nothing is promised but the staff was kind enough to consider a new dedicated branch if there is traffic for it. This is fair.

So, to kick start the thread. I figured all of us are individuals and locals in our town or region all over the country. So, everyone has a good story to tell. You know hidden spots around our turf and who are the culprits who show dis-respect to the environment.

This is how you can support & contribute to this thread ....

1. Highlight great examples of recycling and conservation (pics would be great)
2. Highlight bad examples; I know this won't be a problem, Msia is riot with it
3. Post pics of deforestation, pollution, dirty places, unhygienic practices, poverty ... etc
4. Post great stories about how you go about on a holiday that brings economical spread to rural communities
5. Post good and bad businesses you know that save or spoil the environment
6. Let us know any mind-opening eco-projects by your school, college, society or company
7. Any sad stories, individuals or families that need help
8. Suggestion on things for forumers to do to lessen the burden on Mother Nature
9. Ideas on sustainable energy, going green and anything that helps reduce the usage of natural resources

Remember, this is an educational thread and one that feeds on intellectual curiosity. No arguments please. If you want to dispute a forumer, good manners is always in style. Everyone will respect you for that. One person's treasure may be another person's thrash. No one is absolutely correct, or wrong. Take criticism with good humour.

Lastly, puh-leasseeee keep this thread clutter free. Please don't re-quote long long posts; everyone knows what's written in previous posts, why repeat and take up space. Your post should be short, sweet and interesting. Pics would be great. Hopefully, if this thread survive infancy and live thru adulthood, we can all meet up someday somewhere and organise a happening go-green program. Who knows.

Let the thread begin ........

Start a new branch on environment & conservation

Dear lowyat.net,

After dipping in lowyat forum for a couple of weeks, I discovered that many forumers are the new generation of thinkers. It would be great if a dedicated branch is created to collect forumers musings and rantings on environment and conservation; the stuff Malaysia really need, sorely. I would've let the Kopitiam branch lead the way but it is already cluttered with a heady mix of threads on religion bashing, Anwar, racism .... etc. Too much heat.

When forumers discuss and give feedbacks on the eco-responsibility issues, everyone learn. It'd certainly help promote a cleaner and better Malaysia. It can hv sub threads for culture, heritage, wildlife, recycling, eco-travel, school projects, flora, fauna, posting photos of dirty places, smoky factories or deforestation .... etc. It's a whole new world of possibilities.

What do you all think ?

Rainforest, Orang Asli, etc blog

Dear all wise bloggers,

I am new to this blogging thingy. We are a small outfit in Ipoh that encourages people to learn about the Malaysian countryside; non-touristy ones that is. A few weeks ago, a Mat Salleh friend suggested that we start a blog that accept Adsense so that we can raise some fund to help poor Orang Asli communities (see my signature below). He's an environmentalist and will help getting more like-minded outdoorsy Mat & Minah Sallehs to hit our blog. I think it's a great idea. This forum, especially you guys & girls, are a treasure trove of info. I've learnt a lot.

As far as how Adsense works, I am lost. I'm just winging it and hope for the best. Rainforest, we have been there done that many times over. But Adsense is by far the greatest unknown we are stepping into. To date, I've checked and we have only made 60 cents thru Adsense (LOL). One heck of an adventure I must say.

Anyway, I would be very grateful if everyone can give me a piece of your thought and help us make a good blog. I know it should be updated frequently; that part I promise to do.

What else should I look out for ? Is the layout OK ?

Thanks people !
