Laptop shutdown suddenly. Can't switch on anymore.

Hi, I'm using a laptop, the model is Lenovo Ideapad Y700-15ISK.

I was using it while gaming and it shut down abruptly, (this is the first time it happened) I thought it was a overheating issue because when it shutdown suddenly my laptop was hot so I let my laptop cooled down for 30 minutes and tried switching it back on later. However, when I tried switching it back on later by pressing the power button, the laptop did not respond at all, no lights, no sounds from the fan or machine, nothing.

I did some troubleshooting by Googling online and did the classic 'hold down power button for 30 seconds' step to do some power draining but did not work. Important to note that my battery is not detachable from the outside, the battery is built internally, means I need to unscrew the back and open the laptop cover out and take out the battery.

The exact steps I have tried:

First try: (without removing battery)
1) Unplug charger
2) Held down power button for 30 seconds
3) Plug back charger
4) Laptop LED no light, but I still tried to press power button to switch it on
5) Nothing happened

Second try: (without removing battery)
1) Unplug charger
2) Used a paper clip to press the small reset Novo button for 30 seconds.
3) Plug back charger
4) Laptop LED no light, but I still tried to press power button to switch it on
5) Nothing happened.

Third try:
1) Unplug charger
2) Unscrew the back panel
3) Removed battery - the battery DOES NOT appear bloated (I followed the steps on YouTube, someone did it for the same model)
4) Held down power button for 30 seconds
5) The battery is still not attached back, I plugged back my charger, laptop LED still no light, but I still tried to press power button to switch it on
6) Nothing happened
7) Then I put back the battery (not a new battery, still old one), unplug charger, held down power button for 30 seconds - basically repeating 'first try'
8) Plug back charger, laptop LED no light, but I still tried to press power button to switch it on, nothing happened.

Maybe I missed a step or there are other problems. I haven't tried replacing my battery or replacing my CMOS battery. Worth mentioning also that my warranty has expired. Would really appreciate some help/advice before I go through all the trouble of sending it to a repair center. Thanks.

Where is the best place for IT/ Computer Science?

Hi . Lots of questions I really need help with, please help me out. Don't have to answer them all but if you do know them all, by all means, please give me your opinions.

I'm narrowing down my options to a course related to IT or Computer Science. Been to many education fairs and open days and asked many counselors and there seems to be A LOT of choices and this is a problem for me, because I'm not sure what to choose?

Undergraduate
1. Computer Science
2. Information Technology
3. Information Systems
4. Software Engineering
5. IT (specialist in Network Security)
6. Big Data and many more...

1. May I ask what are the differences (mainly between Computer Science and Information Technology)?
From what I understood, people from Computer Science learns the roots of computing, all the way back to its theories and histories, writes the library of the programming languages and attempting to improve the programming languages (simplifying it, making it more efficient and capable, etc.). Mainly a LOT of SOFTWARE.

Meanwhile the IT people will APPLY these languages into situations mainly in businesses or corporate, and mainly a LOT of HARDWARE.

Please correct me if I'm wrong and please explain more. I'm still not too sure what does Computer Science and IT exactly mean in practical/real-life terms.

2. Which is the best in terms of demand in the next 3-5 years (from the moment I start studying till I graduate) and in terms of job prospects/employ-ability locally and internationally?

3. If you are studying the above mentioned courses, which did you study and where? How was your experience there? (I'm looking towards Sunway, Taylor's, Monash, APU, maybe people who know how the courses are like in these places could help please? I'm also hoping to look for universities that offer international transfers maybe during the 2nd or 3rd year to decent universities for their Computer Science/IT course in Australia, UK, etc.)

4. I understand from many people that Computer Science is really tough which involves a lot of mathematics and logic. I'm a bit weak at those and I'm the kind of person that likes to design things (not the artistic kind, but how it should be presented (the creative side), for example in terms of video game development, how the story should go, how this level should challenge the player, how the character should react, etc. For example for a software or web, how the user interface should look like, what is the best layout for the home page, what sort of features should the software have, etc.)

Please correct me if I'm wrong and please do explain more.

5. Is it true that a Computer Science graduate can do an IT job but an IT graduate might not be able to do a Computer Science job?

6. Is it true that the Hardware-related stuff are boring? (The IT courses from what I understood from people)

Thanks a lot for your time and help! Once again don't have to answer them all but if you do have all the answers, that'll be great. Thanks!

Dilemma: selecting the "correct/right" degree

Hello.

Since secondary school, I could foresee myself not sure what I'm going to do in the future, as in what will my end goal be, my ultimate passion/interests in life, what career field would I pursue. I started attending education fairs since Form 4.

After SPM, my prediction was right, I did not know what to study. I took countless personality and career tests, the results shown are around the lines of social & investigative (not really related, I know).

Many people have asked me where do I want to study, but I always tell them the same thing, that I do not even know what I'm going to pursue, I wouldn't know which university would be the best for the course.

In the end, with many many consultations with college counselors, teachers, seniors, parents and friends, I decided to take on A Level (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics [even one of my lecturers said it's a weird combination of subjects, you can see I'm taking a combination of Science and Humanities, shows that I'm really uncertain of my field of study]). From what I've understood from people and education fairs, A Level can bring you to universities in many different countries, my options will also have a wider range in the future. I'm also quite comfortable with the exam-based format of the A Level course.

Yes, I finished my A Level. And yes, I still do not know what I should study/pursue.

Well I do have a hobby in doing filming such as short films, events, music videos etc and I have done quite a number. The overall feedback for the videos I got from my friends and others are generally positive. But I'm not quite sure whether to pursue filming/broadcasting in the future, so for now it's just a hobby, for me.

Many people said I shouldn't rush my decision. If you managed to select the course that you will be interested/passionate about in the future or when you pursue your career, it'll be a good start. Many people also said I shouldn't wait any longer and just go for something viable, some of their examples given to me were like, "There are a lot of science graduates who end up having a career in finance or accounting, so your degree doesn't decide anything."

As of this moment, I'm more inclined towards the opinion of not rushing the decision to choose a course to pursue. But I'm feeling really uncertain and (maybe a bit nervous/scared) because most people seem to have a goal in mind or a career to pursue and I don't have one that clicks with me yet. I know there are also A LOT of people like me, who cannot decide. Hence I hope this question posted could help such people and myself to find some answers or guidance.

But, I managed to identify a few things throughout these years:
Courses I definitely won't go for: Medicine or anything Biology-related
Courses I'm not really fond of, but still keeping it on the list: Engineering
Courses that I'm considering (the "viable" ones and those that I'm somewhat intrigued/interested in): Information Technology (Network Security or Mobile Development), Mass Communication (Not really related again, I know)

(But believe me, I don't really understand thoroughly how the courses are like for example Mass Communication, I mean I've read the outlines of the course structure, but it doesn't explain much for certain things and the answers that counselors give me are quite vague.)

So it all boils down to these questions:
1. What should I do? Take the time to read up about courses and find the course that is "right" for me? Or just go for something viable?
2. If you do have a suggestion for a degree/course, please share with me your experience of how the course is like in that campus.
(I'm aware that no one can decide for me about what course I should study, I understand. The dilemma is still: should I make a decision soon?)

Thanks a lot for helping me out!

Which RM3-4K laptop will you prefer?

Hi. Been wanting to buy a mid-tier worth-the-buck laptop before GST hits. Did some research and here's what I gathered:

So it seems to me:

Acer V Nitro:
Reason to buy: Best bang for its buck. Dual fan cooling.
Tradeoff: No DVD drive. Short battery life. Cooling not as good as Z5. Might break down after first year (common phenomenon for Acer laptops).

ILLEGEAR Z5 (960M model)
Reason to buy: All-rounder.
Tradeoff: Only local support (going abroad to study will be a hassle if Z5 screws up). More expensive compared to others with similar specs.

Lenovo Y50
Reason to buy: Good contender.
Tradeoff: Terrible screen. Fonts on the keys don't look nice. Game performance inconsistent.

ASUS G551-JM
Reason to buy: Same as Lenovo. Good built quality.
Tradeoff: Single fan cooling. Terrible local post-purchase service.

Hard to choose..ASUS and Acer seems to be more appealing. I just pray that Acer and ASUS won't screw up.

But what's your choice? Please vote! Thanks.

Need laptop recommendation

Hi, would appreciate your opinions

1. Preferred Brand
I heard a lot of good stuff about ASUS laptops but anyway brand doesn't matter much to me. As long as the laptop's good enough for me.

2. Budget
RM3000 - 4000

3. Usage
Lightweight portable workstation (Microsoft Office, medium level video editing), gaming (playing DotA 2 or recent new titles like Assassin's Creed series, The Witcher etc at Medium/High)

4. Preferred laptop/screen size
15 inches at least.

5. Other preferences
Reliable customer service, good warranty, good audio and cooling, comfort

Thank you for your time!

Gaming rig recommendation

Hey, guys. Would love some suggestions on a new gaming rig/desktop.

1) Budget: RM3K - 4K

2) Purpose: Gaming & occasional video rendering, browsing, Microsoft Office

3) Re-use: Monitor (would love a new monitor recommendation) , Speakers

4) Monitor resolution: 1600 x 900 (would love a within-budget new monitor recommendation)

5) Games & softwares used frequently: Pretty much big titles like The Witcher, GTA V, Assassin's Creed series and future titles that can be played on High/Ultra. DotA 2, World of Tanks, After Effects, Sony Vegas Pro

6) Personal preference: After bad cooling experience with AMD processor, would like an Intel please. NVIDIA GPU too. USB 3.0 board.

7) Location: Plan to purchase at Low Yat Plaza

8) Additional requests: Decent gaming peripherals suggestions (keyboard, mouse, headphones) [NOT INCLUDED IN BUDGET]

9) (OPTIONAL) Additional request #2: I've thought of getting a gaming laptop instead, I understand the trade-off of laptop performances, but I kinda like the portability. So I would love a suggestion for a gaming laptop as well, budget 3-4K.

A Levels Thinking Skills and Chemistry. Take?

Hey. I just wanna gather everyone's opinion on this. What do you think of A Levels' Thinking Skills subject? I'm currently taking it (only up to AS level) and I find it quite interesting.

Here's the catch, I've consulted a good number of people including seniors and counselors, and majority (90%) agreed that Thinking Skills is not to say a waste of time, but it's not what people will usually recommend you to take, realistically speaking.

I've consulted a Thinking Skills lecturer and the lecturer told me really honestly that Thinking Skills will not help you for university applications as most universities doesn't recognize Thinking Skills as a subject equivalent to subjects like Chemistry or Accounting or Maths. But in the long run, it will be beneficial to us as it trains you how to think, read and write properly, which I personally agree (I've seen some past year papers and examples). So I take it that A Levels Thinking Skills is actually a plus to your personal soft skills.

I personally think that Thinking Skills doesn't really help in university applications as well. Let's say if you do WELL in Thinking Skills, people won't really be impressed as I said it's not really considered or recognized as a subject. But if you do BADLY in Thinking Skills, it leaves a smudge on your results/certificate and people will have a bad impression on you when it comes to university applications or interviews. That is why most people dropped Thinking Skills or just didn't register for it at the start.

Nevertheless, the Thinking Skills subject looks interesting as I mentioned I've glanced through some past year papers and examples as well. I prefer something that benefits in a long run (not sure if it really does, but to me it looks quite promising). And it's not like I'm aiming for a top university or one in the Ivy League, as long as I get into a nice decent university.

So what do you guys think? Does Thinking Skills really help training your soft skills and your thinking (esp. to those who have took this subject)? Is it worth the time, effort and money to take Thinking Skills? Or should I drop it and focus on my other subjects?

Thank you very much for your time and attention. I'd appreciate everyone's opinion.

Side question:
I'm currently taking Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Thinking Skills. I've been thinking of dropping Chemistry. I have a feeling that I may be more of a humanities/arts person (but I'm not really confident in the feeling yet, and by the way I hated Accounting). I know that I'm not gonna pursue courses like Medicine or Dentistry or Pharmacy. Chemical Engineering doesn't really sound intriguing. Other engineering courses like Civil, Mechanical, E&E, Mechatronics, generally doesn't really interest me. And I understand from seniors that A Level Chemistry is basically hell difficulty, especially when it comes to organic chemistry. I've just been thinking whether I should just take Chemistry as a safety net (as I'm not really sure whether I'm confident of dropping the idea of pursuing Engineering or other courses that requires Chemistry as I said, but I'm not really interested in it.), or should I just drop Chemistry and not waste any more time?

Additional info: A lot of people will ask me what course I'd like to pursue, but that's the problem I do not know, and that is why I went to signup for A Levels as it opens a wider pathway in the future. I might be interested (interested as in I'm just purely INTRIGUED by the subject/caught my interest, NOT to say that I know FOR SURE that I'm gonna study this course) in IT, Filmmaking, Mass Communication, Business Studies and maybe a few more.

Hi. I'm currently taking Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Economics and Thinking Skills (Up to AS only).

Anyone knows a place in Selangor (preferably Petaling Jaya, Puchong area or near Sunway College KL) that sells A Level(AS and A2) textbooks and offers a great price?
A-Levels. Chemistry or Economics.

Hi. Straight to the point. I feel like I may be inclined towards the humanities. But I don't know for sure what course or what field I would pursue in the future (degree, career and so forth).

But I'm interested in Information Technology, Mass Communication, Film-making and Psychology (when I mean interested, as in intrigued by the topic, not to say that I really love it as I don't know what the syllabus or course itself will offer on the real day and if I actually like it.)

So here's the thing, I'm about to pursue my Pre-U and my choice is A-levels (as it offers a relatively wider pathway in the future due to it's syllabus and reputation). I plan to take 3 subjects + Thinking Skills which is not included. So the 3 subjects are: Maths, Physics and one more subject which I'm considering whether Chemistry or Economics.

Personally, I will definitely not pursue a biology-related degree because I really hated Biology in SPM, so things like Medicine is out. Chemical Engineering and Pharmacy, still neutral but not really interested or intrigued but still on my list since I don't hate it as much as I hate Medicine.

So what do you guys think? Chemistry or Economics? Play safe by taking Chemistry? Or take a leap of faith by taking Economics?

Extra info: I'm a pure science student for SPM. Chemistry was the highest score among all 3 sciences (maybe due to I have a bloody good school teacher and a bloody good tuition teacher). Didn't take accounts and economics as extra subject.

Extra question: If I drop either, what will I not be able to pursue in the future?

Extra question #2 :To anyone who knows how the subject Chemistry and Economics in A-levels is like in terms of their syllabus and their style? Please give me a rough rundown. Thank you.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Pre-U dilemma

Hi. everyone, would appreciate your opinion on this. And please correct me if I've mention anything wrong as this is what I understand about Pre-U so far after attending a few education fairs, campus open days and talking to people. Cutting to the chase, here's the issue:

1. I do not know what Pre-U programme/foundation is right for me. Usually people would tell me to think whether I'm a Science or an Arts person, start thinking of how would I want to graduate as (what's my preferred degree choice): a med student? An IT graduate? A interior designer?

Problem: I do not know what I wanna study for my degree. Here's the thing though, I've took countless personality and career tests and the results are usually around the lines of "Social, Entrepreneur and Artistic." Sounds like I'm an Arts/Humanities person right? But the thing is I don't feel like I'm one for sure. I mean, usually we'll get the "spark/kick" when we get our personality test results and when we see it, we'll be like: "Wow, oh yeah, right, this sounds like me." But for me, I don't get that feeling. In other words, I don't feel really safe going into a humanities path. But if you'd ask me, Yes, I'm talkative (Social), I like mixing with people. My Pendidikan Seni (Primary 1-6 and Form 1-3 only, Not SPM) and drawing sucks but I like to design things like posters or tee shirts that are simple, elegant and not too complex (Artistic).

2. I have interests in Information Technology (IT), Video Games Development (more towards the story scripting and level design, not really into the technical coding), Education, Broadcasting and Psychology.

Problem: IT is a Science field, Education and Broadcasting is more in the Humanities. Contradiction? Why do I like IT? I love computer technology. I like to see those fancy gadgets and tech stuff work. Why do I like Video Games Development? I think it's cool and I like to be part of a video game development esp. in the story part. Why do I like Education? I love teaching people stuff. I find sharing stuff with other people is my thing. And I get hyped on making Powerpoint presentations then presenting it to other people. Why do I like broadcasting? During my secondary school life, I've made a few videos and the feedback I got was good, and I get the satisfaction of achievement. Why Psychology? I like to study how people think.

3. Courses like Broadcasting and Video Games Development and Psychology.

Problem: I very often hear that these fields in Malaysia are not in a really high demand, as in job opportunities are quite slim and even being able to find one would be one that its salary will not be very rewarding. Opinions? And is there a campus that's really good in these programmes?

4. I don't feel safe investing my time and money into a foundation path (IT or Broascasting). But I do not want to waste my time either (taking up the Sciences in A-levels/AUSMAT/CIMP/Pre-U equivalent).

Problem: IT, Education, Psychology and Broadcasting is something I might be interested in, but not to the extent that I feel safe, because I have doubts that if I choose this foundation path, maybe I go into classes for a few months then I realise that this isn't for me. And I would have wasted a lot of money and time. When I share this with counselors, most of them would suggest me that I take Pre-U programmes like A-levels/AUSMAT/CIMP/equivalent, then take the Sciences. So when I graduate from that Pre-U programme, I would be equipped with the necessary knowledge to get into many different degree courses as taking these Pre-U programmes then taking the Sciences would promise a broader path in the future. But I don't wanna waste my time as well and go through all the stress grind (as what we have heard a lot about A-levels). What if I suddenly realise that actually I'm really into Broadcasting or IT?

5. If I were to take a Pre-U programme (AUSMAT(Sunway)/A-Levels/CIMP(Sunway)/Equivalent), what is right for me?

Problem: I've been going through millions of brochures and websites and I still cannot make up my mind. I understand that:

AUSMAT (in simple terms), is 50% school-based, 50% exam. They have coursework and assignments to be completed and they emphasize on continuous assessment. Very busy due to assignments and homework. Open doors to mainly AUS, NZ unis.

A-levels, 100% exam: AS and A2 exam. Basically, not much homework but lots of studying. Routine is study, study, study. Lots of stress, not much breathing room. Very prestigious (arguably one of the most prestigious among all). Open doors to unis worldwide.

CIMP: 70% continuous assessment, 30% final exam. Similar to AUSMAT, coursework, assignments and presentations. Seems to be a lot more co-curriculum involved. Open doors to mainly Canada, US unis.

I also understand there are American Transfer Degree Programmes. I would love someone to give me his/her opinion on this. Course Structure, flexibility, recognition etc.

When it comes to this, people would ask me, what is my study style? Do you prefer doing coursework? Do you prefer continuous assessment to keep you studying? Do you prefer the SPM-style (everything depends on exam which is A-levels)? Problem is I really don't know. Do I hate homework (assignments), Yes I do. Do I hate continuous assessment, Yes I do. Do I hate the stress grind and super tough in-depth syllabus (A-levels), Yes I do. But come on, be it AUSMAT or A-levels or CIMP, homework, stress and assessment comes in a package. Every programme has its difficulties. And this is exactly why I couldn't decide.

6. If I couldn't make up my mind before 2015, my backup plan is going for A-levels in January and taking the Sciences (Maths, Physics and Chemistry/Further Maths and maybe an extra subject). Because most of the people suggested me not to waste too much time on taking a break and get workin' before the laziness accumulates and your "engine" slows down.

Problem: Is this wise? Reason why I do this is because taking the A-level Sciences seems to be most promising and it could open up many paths in the future when I can finally make up my mind, figure out what I'm really interested in and decide for my degree course. And why A-levels? Because it's arguably one of the most prestigious and recognized programmes. And why do I take the sciences because I'm equipped with the necessary knowledge if I wanna pursue a science degree. If I take the arts/humanities, I cannot pursue a science degree. But I really feel intimidated by the stress it could give (as I have consulted with seniors who took this programme)

7. Sunway or Taylors? And which programme?

Problem: Title #7 says it all.

I hope someone would help pull me out from this dilemma. It's January 2015 soon and I hope by then I could make up my mind as classes are gonna start. I'd appreciate any help or opinion or suggestions that you guys can give me. Thank you very much for your time and attention.

Additional info: One thing for sure though, is that I'm definitely not into Medicine, Law. Engineering and Accounting is still on my list, but I'm still not quite fond of it.

PC Recommendation under the budget of 2K

Hi. I'm looking for a recommendation for a PC assemble (includes monitor and casing) under the budget of 2K. Best if you could squeeze it below 1.5K, or just show both and kindly provide comparisons and reasons.

The PC assemble I want is for computer gaming, that's able to play recent games in the market and able to play the games in the future for at least 2-3 years. (e.g and especially Assassin's Creed 3, Skyrim, BattleField3, GTA 5, Modern Warfare 3, Deus Ex: Human Revolution and etc)

I went to Viewnet in Lowyat weeks ago, asked a guy there, I told him my budget was 1.5K, then he recommended me this AMD A10 5800K quad core processor (RM599), integrated with Radeon HD 7660D, he claims that this processor is able to compete with an Intel i3 (if not mistaken, I forgot whether i3 or i5), then he recommended me other accessories (RAM and etc), I don't think I'll need to put it here (I lost the list already, sorry )

Summarizing:

1) I would like a PC assemble recommendation (includes monitor and casing) under the budget of 2K (best under 1.5K)

2) Is the Viewnet guy true or your own opinion towards the AMD A10 chip, or anyone have bought it and experienced it, tell me what do you think in terms of gaming experience, FPS rate and stuff (is it smooth under High/Ultra graphics or etc)

I'm planning to purchase within December, maybe 1-2 weeks after this post

I really need everyone's help on this. I'm new on purchasing a computer on lowyat, hopefully this is really worth the money. I sincerely thank you for everyone's assistance and kindly reply me as soon as possible, because this is an urgent matter. Once again, thank you very much and I apologize for any inconvenience caused.

*Please tell me if this is the correct place to post this kind of questions.
