Dr M: Expect a change in lifestyle

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians should expect a change in lifestyle, as a decrease in monthly income is impending following the Covid-19 fallout, says Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"One of the things we have to accept is that if the business is not good, you cannot expect to be paid the same way.

"All of us will have lower income, therefore our lifestyle will have to change. We cannot enjoy the same old lifestyle which cost money," said the former prime minister during an interview with MyPerintis on Facebook live on Monday (April 6).

With lower lifestyle spendings, Dr Mahathir said Malaysians will then adapt to live on a lower salary, which will lead to less financial burden on respective employers.

Dr Mahathir, then, gave an analogy of footballers, where their respective employers are struggling to pay them due to unprecedented social distancing measures taken by various countries to stop the spread of Covid-19.

"Footballers want to be paid the same way, but they are not playing football, no one is watching and buying seats, so how can the company pay them the same way?" he questioned.

Dr Mahathir said Malaysians must begin to accept that their lifestyle spending must be reduced in order to cope with a lower income, adding that they should also consider other jobs for side income.

"Basically I will say this, the standard of living that we used to enjoy before, very high standards you know? Wearing nice dresses, and going to parties... we will have to be cut off from that and reduce our expenditure.

"So, we will need less money and our standard of living will be much lower. If you are prepared to do that, I think we can overcome this pandemic much faster," he said.

Pundits have said a global recession is imminent, as many businesses in the world's top performing economies came to a halt due to unprecedented measures taken to stop the spread of Covid-19, which have infected more than 1.27 million worldwide.

At the same time, Dr Mahathir advised Malaysians who are unemployed due to the movement control order (MCO) to consider picking up other occupations that became in demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic, such as delivery or cooking.

"As I said just now, among the things the industry is going to pick up is transportation - delivery. (If) you have your own car, maybe you can do delivery so you can earn income, not from the old job, but new things.

"If you are not working in a hotel as a cook (due to MCO)... you can also cook at home and deliver...

"So we have to see, due to Covid-19, what new jobs are needed and created, and then we go for that job. We must not say I was a cook before, therefore I must cook the same way. No, we have to change," he added.

Meanwhile, Dr Mahathir, in emphasising the importance of adhering to the MCO to stem the outbreak of Covid-19, said the local economy would require some time to recover.

"Even after it (MCO) ends, we cannot go back to the old economy right away. Our economy has changed and we need to maintain what we learned during this outbreak.

"Improve our usual operations by using the experience (we learn from MCO) about digitalisation, good management approach and with that, our economy will return, but not right away," he added.
https://www.thestar.com.my/news/nation/2020...ovid-19-fallout

UM faculty appealing for funds to save its buildin

UNIVERSITI Malaya’s Faculty of Economics and Administration was once two beautiful buildings, designed look different from the other buildings dotted around the campus.

Now, these two structures are very old, in bad shape and have become a health and safety hazard, especially after the top floor of the administrative building was razed in a fire this year.

Although insurance and funds from the Education Ministry were given to fix the damage caused to the second and third floors of the block, it still is not enough to finish repairing all the damage, says the faculty’s dean Prof Dr Edmund Terence Gomez.

The fire occurred on the second and third floors of the block at about 1.15am on Aug 27, affecting 21 rooms and 19 lecturers.

The old wiring, rusty staircases and damaged flooring still need fixing.

The lecture halls also have leaky ceilings and the buildings contain asbestos which must be removed, he said.

“When there is a massive downpour, students have to put up with leaking roofs during the lectures.

“The problem is we have not been able to find the funds to upkeep the buildings because public university allocation from the Education Ministry has been slashed, ” he told StarEdu.

Two of the five lecture halls have been repaired but the faculty needs another RM3mil to upgrade the remaining three.

“In total, we will need between RM4mil to RM5mil to upgrade the entire faculty.

“We have to protect these heritage buildings which are part of the country’s oldest university, ” he said.

Appealing to the alumni and public to help fund the much-needed repairs, he said so far, only one contractor company has stepped up to make sure that students get to study in comfort.

Qinglong Building Supplies will fix the leaky ceilings of all five lecture halls, he said.

“At a time when most companies are worried about the economic challenges, this contractor has agreed to bear the estimated RM300,000 cost of the waterproofing work for the sake of our students.”

Thanking the company, he urged the corporate sector to do its part in conserving an important national treasure.

“These buildings were built in 1969. They were among the earliest faculties to be established when UM opened its Kuala Lumpur campus.

“The structure with the lecture halls is exceptionally unique with its lotus flower-shaped roof while the administrative building has a beautiful dome.

“Both are fascinating architectural works with a very rich history, ” he said. The administrative building has a dome sitting atop it while the building housing the lecture theaters has a roof designed to look like a lotus flower.

The most distinctive features of these structures is the use of modern principles of construction, particularly in the creation of the folded plate shell roofs.

The cylindrical design by architect-turned politician Goh Hock Guan stepped away from the the brutalist style that was in fashion for campus architecture then, to convey a modern sense of monumentality and intellectual and moral gravitas.

Those interested to donate may email the faculty at fea@um.edu.my; bank in to CIMB account

number 98905000001205; or write out cheques to Bendahari, Universiti Malaya.

https://www.thestar.com.my/news/education/2...e-its-buildings
