Richard, whose daughter is now an influencer in the US, estimates that he spent “over S$300k” on her school fees.

According to Richard, Elaine was originally majoring in communication studies in Nanyang Technological University but a year and a half into her course, Elaine told her parents that she wanted to transfer to the US.

“You know what they say about people being influenced by their friends. One of her close friends was transferring, so she told us that she wanted to do the same. We were against it but she was adamant," said Richard.

He was really reluctant to send her to the US for two reasons: firstly, he was worried she would settle down there and never return to Singapore, and more importantly, he knew he couldn’t afford the school fees.

“Her friend told her that it would only cost a certain amount to complete her studies there, but we told her that there was no way it would cost so little. She didn’t believe us, but she quickly realised that we were right when we got there. So we had to make sure we had enough to support her.”

After a year in a San Diego community college, Elaine got into the University of California San Diego, where she finished her degree.

Richard thought that Elaine would get a job after graduation. “We thought it was the end of her education, but that wasn’t the case," laughed Richard.

But his daughter had plans to get an MBA because she felt that her career progression would be limited if she didn’t have one.

"She did a double masters — in business and information systems — in Boston University, so we had to take two education loans because of that," said Richard. "We paid for the instalments while she was in school, and even after her graduation ‘cos she couldn’t find a job."

Thankfully, Elaine was also awarded a partial scholarship of US$20K (S$26.5K) a year by the school, which helped ease some of the financial burden.

"But now that she’s married and has her own business, she’s taken over the payments,” added Richard.

We ask Richard if he remembers how much he’s spent on Elaine’s education. He went quiet for a moment before saying: “It’s not that I don’t want to tell you how much we spent, but I really don’t remember. We sent her money so many times, but we didn’t keep the receipts. What’s the point of having a record like that? But for her school fees alone, a very modest estimate would be at least S$300K. I’m very sure that it’s more than that, but we’ll leave it as that since I don’t remember.”

Any best way to pay overseas uni fees from malaysia ?

1) pay online via malaysia credit card ?
2) pay online via malaysia bank to foreign bank transfer
3) open foreign bank account, transfer money there and pay online from that account or use their credit card ?
3) others?

Wondering in terms of exchange rates and fees, which method is best for 3 to 6 years duration

Video quality from media/android boxes

Wondering if anyone noticed differences in 1080p video quality.

My few boxes so far :

WDTV - stock app
WDTV live - stock app
AC Ryan PlayOn! HD2 - stock app
MINIX NEO U1 - android app
X96 air - android app

Android apps are the ones from play store eg. VLC, MX PLAYER, KODI / K PLAYER etc ... these apps have different video quality too.... some very raw and some refined. So basically if buy any android box, the video quality is the same as the app is the same anyway. Lots of trial errors and tweaking required to support bitstream passthrough and DTS support etc.

Stock app means movie files are played by default built-in app (cannot install android app from play store). Overall i seem to prefer video quality from the stock apps more ... movie feel and refined. Also the interface for choosing audio / subtitles .... ffwd / pause / rew / search etc. are easier and neater. Less fuss.

Anyone knows any box with stock app that can support 4K and new file codecs eg HEVC / H265 / 264 / etc ?

Overseas degree from local vs foreign campus

Seems prices paid for same overseas degree in local Malaysia campus are much cheaper vs overseas uni.

Examples taken from local Monash /Nottingham campus vs overseas campus (Monash KL vs Monash Australia or Nottingham KL vs Nottingham UK). Prices are at least triple overseas for same degree.

Anyone knows first hand experience the difference ?

- education quality is lower here eg lecturers, experience, etc?
- facilities is less here eg halls, labs, library, sports, recreation, etc ?
- less recognition with employers ?

Branded desktop pc vs custom pc

Hi, i been using custom desktop pc all this time now ~ 20 years, but was just wondering if worth to get branded ones eg. dell, HP, lenovo, etc.

Is there difference actually eg. bugs / compatibility, performance, etc ? Branded is more expensive compared to custom, if compare specs ?

I'm guessing with branded ... I can't simply open up the casing and mod/change the components without voiding the warranty, meaning i have to go thru the service centers to fix or change anything, this can be bothersome right? Eg. add hard disks, usb pci cards, etc.

I'm not into gaming but more to home office work, streaming and video watching .... 24/7 power on.

Police without uniform harrassment like road bully

Seems yesterday police without uniform block a car with his motorbike and behave like road bully to the car driver. Caused massive jam in bandar utama for 30mins.

Is it convenient and affordable?

Based on parking.com.my/item/kl-sentral/ the rates seem to be as folloes...not sure accurate :

First hour or part thereof – RM 4.00
Every subsequent hour or part thereof – RM 4.00
Maximum charge per day – RM 40.00

Color printer to buy for assignment printouts

Any recommendations for type of printer and best value for price per A4 printout piece eg bubble, ink, laser, etc?

There's also those self-refillable catridges i see everywhere in Digital mall previously ... not sure how those compare.

I've bought Canon PIXMA color printer/scanner in past .. hardly used but spoilt when printing now (can't print color despite new ink)

Wondering to buy for wife who drinks coffee. I'm not coffee drinker.

Is it worth buying? Each drink can range from rm2 to rm4 each.

Taste wise, is it bad coffee or not for serious drinkers? I'm not thinking of the fancy barrista machines eg. grinder, pressure brewing, drip etc.... too expensive and troublesome.

Tried WD caviar 3TB previously, Windows 7 only recognizes 2TB max.

But this time with new seagate 3TB, the full 3TB is recognized and been backing up stuff without problem. Even my old WDTV media player recognizes it .. wow !!

Tried getting cheapest quote from pos malaysia (not pos laju).

1) box containing 2 bags instant noodles (10 packet) - rm 60+
2) soft bag containing 1thin clothes - rm40+

So expensive i decided not to send

Is there a cheaper way? How does import sellers send to kl... or something wrong wif our pos malaysia rates?
