ASUS® Rampage III Black Edition Review

Recently Asus® unveils yet another the X58 based motherboards to its ROG line up - The Rampage III Black Edition, replacing the Rampage III Extreme as the new top gun of the ROG family. Today the X58 chipset is roughly 2 and a half years old. Some questioning, why manufacturers still making X58 based motherboard while P67 for Sandy Bridge is being clearly the popular choice among the majority. My answer is simple - if you are one going for an Intel® 6-core CPU, you gonna stick to X58 based platform somehow for now XD. Btw, you may find the R3B (Rampage III Black) detail specification here.

Unboxing

Let's snap a photo of the box before we start. ASUS® has painted the box into purple & black themes.
Also, there are slight changes with the ROG logo design. Overall the R3B box design looks stunning but then I think the logo design seems to be very familiar...hmmm wait, does it look like our local vehicle manufacturer - the proton's logo design? XD

Like other ROG motherboards, there's transparent layer comes with the box.
It's for the ease of inspecting the motherboard without unboxing it.

Some of the features explanation. Basically from here we know the thunderbolt is an advanced Audio & LAN combo add on card. Why I say it's add on card? That's because later on you may find the motherboard itself already equipped with built in Intel® Gigabit Ethernet LAN & the 8 channels HD codec SupremeFX X-Fi 2.

Accessories inspection, spotted,
1 x ROG Connect cable
1 x 3-Way SLI Bridge
1 x SLI Cable
1 x CrossFire Cable
1 x 2-in-1 ASUS Q-Connector Kit
3 x 2-in-1 SATA signal cables
1 x 2-in-1 SATA 6G cables
1 x 2-port USB2.0 + ESATA module
1 x I/O Shield
3 x Thermal Sensor Cable Packs
1 x Cable Ties Pack
1 x ROG theme label
1 x 12-in-1 ROG Cable Label
1 x USB to USB cable for ThunderBolt
2 x Wi-Fi Ring Moving Antenna
1 x Optional NB Fan

And the audio precision test report?

It's the laboratory report for the several audio quality testing on the Thunderbolt USB audio DAC (Powered by Xonar). Please note that the size of R3B is Extended ATX Form Factor, you might need a bigger casing for it.

Closer look at the CPU area, the R3B is powered by 8 phase PWM design. Also the R3B is featured with Extreme Engine Digi+ , where it's equipped with high performance digital VRM design can easily achieve the high performance with adjustable CPU PWM frequency.

The black & grey 6 x DIMM slots, support max. 48 GB Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory with Triple Channel memory architecture.

Closer look at the front area, spotted:
- Onboard Switches: Power & Reset
- LN2 mode Switch
- PCIe x16 Lane Switches ( You may turn on & off the PCIE lanes for debug & quick swap purpose)
- The Numerical debug LED
- Go Button (shortcut to favorite OC profile)
- ProbeIt (Voltage measurement points for DMM)

ASUS® Maximus IV Extreme Quick Review

If the new Intel® Sandy Bridge CPUs have got your attention, you must be considering a motherboard to put them in. Of course, there are loads of new boards out there where you may hardly to decide which one to go for.

Today we are looking at the latest ROG 'Maximus' Series motherboard from Asus®. Last time we saw a Maximus board, it is the Maximus III designed for the LGA1156 CPUs. So it makes sense that for their replacement we have the Maximus IV as the LGA1155 platform is designed to replace the LGA1156 platform.

Detail specification of Maximus IV Extreme: Click here!

Unboxing

The M4E is packed in red box - Asus® has been using it on the ROG lineup motherboards for couple of years.

The board itself. Same as other ROG motherboards, Maximus IV Extreme comes in R&B themes (Red & Black).
The Maximus IV Extreme is the socket LGA 1155 motherboard, supports Intel® 2nd Generation Core™ i7,i5 & i3 CPUs.
Note that the Maximus IV extreme is Extended ATX Form Factor ( 30.5 cm x 26.9 cm ) , please make sure your casing is big enough for this giant.

Closer look at the CPU area. Eye candy design

Like its predecessor V+ series, the SSDNow V+100 also uses Toshiba T6UG1XBG controller but with updated firmware version.
The new firmware allows much aggressive OS-independent garbage collection and an overall higher performance.
The OS-independent garbage collection is important as you can use it on non-TRIM supported OS (WinXP, MacOS etc) without worrying the SSD suffers performance degradation after using it for a period of time.

Test Bed

* CPU: Intel® Core™ i7 980x@3.3GHz, cooled by Prolimatech Megashadow Deluxe edition.
* Motherboard: MSI® Big Bang XPower
* RAM: Kingston® HyperX T1 1600CL9 6GB Kit
* VGA: Gigabyte® SOC Radeon 5770
* HDD: Kingston® SSDNow V+100 64GB SSD ( AHCI mode & RAID mode)
* PSU: Antec® CP850 Watt Modular PSU
* OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

Single Disk Testing

Let's start with the popular HDTune, the new HDtune Pro has bundled with lots of new features.
The SSDNow V+100 64GB SSD is plugged into another system now.
I've use the data erase function to erase the blocks so that the SSD is back to default factory condition.
The 64GB V+100 SSD has sequential reading at average 196MB/s under data-less condition.

Now the SSD has OS installed (Windows 7 64bit), there are a few drop between 0-15GB because the OS & some software are installed there.

Coming next is the CrystalDiskMark, the number of test run is set to 5 & the test size is set to 1GB.
Sequential reading speed is about the same as previous result.
What we concern here is the 4k results.
The V+100 SSD's performance doesn't change much regardless of queue depth.

Lately i got my hands on some hardware, the Intel® Core™ i5 655k & Asus® Maximus III Extreme.

You may find the detailed product info here & here.

Hardware Unboxing
Let's quickly go through the hardware unboxing,

The Asus Maximus III Extreme is an Intel® P55 Express Chipset motherboard, supports Intel® Socket 1156 Core™ i7 Processor/Core™ i5 Processor/Core™ i3 Processor.

Closer look at the CPU ( a bit blur though ) , the Intel® Core™ i5 655k is a CPU with unlocked CPU multiplier.
You may choose max up to 63x multiplier.

5 x PCIe 2.0 x16 Supports single at x16, dual at x16, triple at x 16 x16 x8, quad x8, or 5 x8.
Supports NVIDIA® SLI™ Technology / ATI® CrossFireX™ Technology.
On Board Power & Reset buttons ready for naked pc users.

Closer look at rear panel. There are a few interesting features here:
Onboard Clear CMOS button - Clear CMOS with a single push.
RC Bluetooth - The top button on the little expansion card, it can bridge connection with smart phone & overclocking the system via the phone!
I've tested on it, the user interface is simple yet full of overclocking settings & the response is surprisingly fast. Very innovative feature.
ROG Connect - The USB port (known as ROG connect port) besides the bluetooth expansion card, it links the system to a notebook through a USB
cable, allowing users to monitor the system status as well as to make on-the-fly parameter adjustments at hardware level.
USB BIOS Flashback - plug the thumb drive into the ROG Connect port & push the ROG Connect button (bottom button) for 2 seconds, BIOS would be
automatically flashed under standby power.

Q_LED: Onboard debug tool, provides updates on POST status.
Go Button: A dual function button, A quick press of this before POST enables the MemOK feature which diagnoses memory issues and patches
them to increase the chances of a successful boot. Holding it for a longer period before POST will load a configured set
of BIOS settings that user previously assigned to the GO button.
LN2 Jumper: Above Go Button, help the CPU recover from a frozen state.
ProbeIt: DMM measurement points for voltages.

Test Bed

    * CPU: Intel® Core™ i5 655k@3.2GHz, cooled by Prolimatech Megashadow Deluxe edition.
* Motherboard: Asus Maximus III Extreme
* RAM: Gskill F3-17600CL7D-4GBPIS 4GB kit
* VGA: Asus ENG 480 GTX
* HDD: Patriot Warp V2.0 30GB SSD X 2 (RAID 0 mode)
* PSU: Antec CP850 Watt Modular PSU
* OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

Overclocking Stability Test

4GHz ( 133 bclk x 30 ) @ 1.15625v

Since this is a K series CPU ( with unlocked multiplier), let's utilise the feature.
By adjusting the multiplier and cpu voltage, the clockspeed raised to 4GHz without sweat.
Screenshot captured in mist of LinX stress testing.
p/s: CPU-Z provides inaccurate Vcore value, Vcore bios set to 1.15625v. DMM shows 1.162v load, 1.164 idle.

LinX finished without error.

CPU: 4GHz ( 200 bclk x 20 ) @ 1.175v
(LOW QPI Link)

Done with easy overclocking settings, let's try some standard overclocking settings.
Now the bclk has been raised to 200MHz, CPU multiplier lower down to 20. QPI ratio set to x12 on purpose.
Other votlages settings refer to screenshot. Stress test running.

LinX finished without error. However you may observed that memory benchmark scored lower than previous settings.
