Help! TM DSL2640B home n/w headache!

Hi everyone!

Have been referencing LYN for years now and its always helped me solve my computer woes, but now I'm really at wits end and need

Have been using a TM provided Billion router/modem (Streamyx 1M) for several years with no problem until I started getting disconnections a few times a week and the Billion kept forgetting passwords (resetting itself to factory default). Complain #1 to TM - they came and changed it to a new D-Link DSL 2640B. That's when the headaches REALLY started... disconnections/ hangs up to 15 times a day!

Searched the net and some suggestions were
1. Keep the 2640B from overheating (Done. A small fan blows on it 24/7 now)
2. Use Router Commander ( http://www.routercommander.com/ ) - Done. No difference. But it did identify a problem with Upstream Attenuation showing 0db. Reported this to TM

Complain #2 to TM - They sent someone to the cabinet and changed the port. Now I get Attenuation Dn/ Up 14 / 3 db, SNR Dn/Up 32/24 db, which is pretty decent margins. No help. One thing I did notice, which was very strange... wired LAN connections show no internet access on all 4 ports (ipconfig showed IP correct, gateway correct, but unable to ping gateway). WIFI connections could connect to internet though (?!). Thought maybe a problem with the routers LAN hardware hanging. Call to TM shows the port at their end was stable and connected. Port reset did not help.

Complain #3 to TM - They changed the DSL 2640B to another DSL 2640B. Technician said if problem still continues, they can't resolve anymore. Problems persist...

My current home network setup as follows:

Phone line > DSL 2640B > LAN1: Directly to Desktop (Win 7), LAN2 to: DES-1008D (8 port unmanaged switch distributing wired connections to rest of house, mostly unused)
From one of the DES 1008D connections > DIR 655 setup as Access Point - connected to LAN port (not WAN port)

Other Devices using the internet (using mostly wireless, sometimes wired) : Macbook (OSX Lion), Netbook (Win 7), Laptop (Win 7), Ipad2, Iphone, BB Torch, Ipod

DSL 2640B Settings:
- Firmware: GE_1.07
- Router IP 192.168.1.1
- DHCP enabled
- IP Range: 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.253
- Wireless ON (b,g mode): SSID - "ABCD", WPA2 Only, Mode WPA-PSK
** Note I tried setting DNS to 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 but the firmware keeps setting to 202.188.0.133/ 202.188.1.5

DIR 655 Settings
- Firmware: 1.35WW Hardware ver: A4 (just reflashed in attempt to improve matters!)
- Router IP: 192.168.1.253 (some sites mention to have it outside the IP range, some say any available IP?? I have tried both approaches. Problem persists either way though)
- DNS Relay: Off
- DHCP Disabled
- Wireless ON (b,g,n mode): SSID - "ABCD", WPA2 Only (AES cipher), Mode WPA-Personal
- QOS : Off
- Access Control: Off
- Firewall : SPI Off
- NAT Endpoin Filtering UDP/TCP: both set to independent
- Anti Spoof: Off
- WISH: On
- UPnP: Disabled

FYI...WHEN the internet connection is working, I can get 900+Mb down / 380 up (speedtest to Msia server)

I don't want to buy a new modem /router either if possible cos UNIFI cables have been laid outside my house and the TMPoint says it will be available sometime Q1... From what I understand about Unifi's DIR 615 problems on LYN forum, I might as well save the money for a Mikrotik / Asus... but in the meantime I just need to get the internet working and stable to get some work done!!!

I am at wits end!! Can't believe I'd say this, but I actually miss my Billion...at least it worked (albeit sometimes a bit absent minded). Can someone help me... please?

Addendum:
1. While writing this post I had to reset my modem 4 times already!
2. DSL Light remains solid when Win7 Desktop (Wired LAN) shows no network connection
3. I notice that some WiFi connected devices are able to surf even when the LAN is "down". Some cannot (I believe due to some devices being connected to the 2640B can connect, those connected to the 655, which is in turn connected to the 2640B's LAN port, would not be able to connect)

13/1/12: Have now switched off the 655 in an attempt to isolate the problem. Will see how it goes.
