The former prime minister’s aide says Dr Mahathir Mohamad was taken to the National Heart Institute by ambulance.

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was warded for observation at the National Heart Institute (IJN) this morning, following a fall at his home.
His aide Suffi Yusoff said Mahathir remained conscious and was taken to IJN by ambulance.

“I was made to understand that he fell while moving from the balcony to the living room,” he said in a WhatsApp text to a media group chat

.Mahathir previously made multiple visits to IJN, the latest on July 13 last year after experiencing fatigue while attending a picnic and potluck in Putrajaya to celebrate his 100th birthday and the 99th birthday of his wife, Dr Hasmah Ali.

He left the event early after participating in activities such as cycling, and was taken to IJN for observation. He was discharged later the same day.

PAS man offers to help reunite Indira with daughter

Zaharudin Muhammad says the legal and religious aspects of the case have long been settled, and that the matter should now be approached from a humanitarian and familial perspective

PETALING JAYA: A PAS leader today offered to act as an intermediary to help reunite M Indira Gandhi with her daughter, Prasana Diksa, whom she has not seen for nearly 17 years.
Speaking at a press conference, Sungai Buloh PAS chief Zaharudin Muhammad said the legal and religious aspects of the case had long been settled, and that the matter should now be approached from a humanitarian and familial perspective.

He said his priority was to facilitate a meeting, in his personal capacity, between Indira and her daughter, and that Islam did not justify separating a mother from her child.

“I am prepared to act as an intermediary. I urge Indira’s child, Prasana, or her father, Ridzuan, to contact me.

“What matters the most is that I help a mother meet her child again. I have promised Indira that I will work towards this,” he said.

Also present at the press conference were rights lawyer Latheefa Koya, as well as activists Rafidah Ibrahim and Syarul Ema Rena Abu Samah, also known as Ratu Naga.

Apart from Prasana and Ridzuan Abdullah, Indira’s former husband, Zaharudin also urged anyone with information on the girl’s whereabouts to contact him so that discussions could take place.

He said that in this matter, the issue of the child’s religion would not be broached.

“This is about being humane, which is central to Islamic values. Islam does not permit the separation of a mother and child on the basis of religion,” he added

Riduan has been the subject of an arrest warrant since 2018 for failing to return Prasana to Indira after losing a legal battle over custody and the religious conversion of their children.

He had converted the couple’s three children to Islam in 2009 without Indira’s consent and sought custody through the shariah court.

On Jan 29, 2018, the Federal Court ruled that the conversions were null and void, and ordered the inspector-general of police to arrest Riduan for defying the High Court’s directive to return Prasana.

The Ipoh High Court last month ordered the police to widen the search for Riduan, with Justice Norsharidah Awang saying it should be extended across the entire country.

Earlier this month, Inspector-General of Police Khalid Ismail said he had assured Indira that the police remained committed to finding her daughter

PETALING JAYA: Members of the Baba Nyonya community in Melaka are now able to amend their ethnicity in their birth certificates to state their lineage.
Baba and Nyonya Association of Malaysia chairman Ronald Gan said the provision will be extended to Peranakan Chinese in the rest of the country from January.

He credited Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and deputy unity minister K Saraswathy for playing a key part in this, saying Anwar has been pushing for this for over a decade, The Star reported.

PETALING JAYA: A Subang PKR leader has expressed a loss of confidence in the constituency’s MP, Wong Chen, and suggested he step down from the elected post if the party’s struggle no longer aligns with his.

Subang PKR deputy chief Wan Hasifi Amin said that Wong’s statement yesterday, where he lamented the lack of reforms carried out by the unity government, was unnecessary, especially coming from a PKR MP.

Wan Hasifi also claimed that the three-term MP did not attend a single divisional meeting since being elected a PKR central leadership council member in 2022, a post he lost in the party’s recent elections.

“And, until now, no Subang Pakatan Harapan committee has been formed, when it could serve as a platform for cooperation among the PH components in the Subang parliamentary constituency.

“As the grassroots machinery, we in Subang PKR want to state our disappointment and loss of confidence in Wong Chen,” he said in a statement.

Wan Hasifi called for Wong to be dropped as a candidate in the next general election, saying Subang PKR wanted an MP who is not distant from the grassroots and heeds the voice of the people.

“If Wong Chen feels that (the party’s) struggle is no longer aligned with his, then the clear and principled move he should make is to step down (as MP) respectfully.”

Yesterday, Wong announced that he was taking a two-week break from work for a family holiday, during which he will ponder his future in politics.

The former PKR central leadership council member said he could not shake a deep worry that the government led by PKR president Anwar Ibrahim would have little to show in terms of institutional reforms at the end of its parliamentary term.

Wong was aligned with former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli during the party’s elections last month. He lost his seat on the PKR central leadership council, while Rafizi was defeated by Nurul Izzah Anwar and subsequently offered his resignation from the Cabinet

Wong was first elected an MP in 2013, when he won the contest for the Kelana Jaya seat for PKR with a 28,827-vote majority.

He was then fielded to contest the Subang seat in 2018, winning by a convincing 92,353 votes before recording a bigger victory in the 2022 general election with a 115,074-vote majority.

KUALA LUMPUR: Lawyer-activist M Visvanathan has proposed that the Attorney-General’s Chambers appoint him as an ad hoc =prosecutor to oversee the case involving Teoh Beng Hock’s death.

Visvanathan, chairman of Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody Together (Edict), said he would be able to solve the case within 21 days if he were appointed as a special prosecutor.

Speaking at a gathering in solidarity with Teoh’s family here, the lawyer said three doctors had confirmed that the deceased had injuries to his neck which occurred prior to his fall from the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam.

He added that these doctors previously confirmed the matter in court.

Visvanathan questioned why the police had launched their recent investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement, when there was evidence that Teoh had suffered injuries prior to his fall.

“We have had multiple attorneys-general (AGs), prime ministers and inspectors-general of police since 2009, yet the mystery of Teoh’s death still haunts the nation.

“I propose to the AG, prime minister and home ministry: make me the ad hoc prosecutor. I will solve this case within 21 days of my appointment,” he said.

Last month, Teoh’s family was informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as requiring no further action or NFA.

On Nov 21 last year, the High Court had directed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into the death of Teoh more than 15 years ago.

Teoh died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict.

PETALING JAYA: A 65-year-old motorcyclist died early this morning after he was involved in a crash with a 12-year-old boy who was also on a motorbike in Johor Bahru.

Johor Bahru Utara police chief Balveer Singh said the incident occurred at Lorong Sentosa, near Kampung Sri Aman

The victim had exited the junction while the boy was riding on the main road when they collided, resulting in the senior citizen falling and injuring his head.

“He died at 6.40am today while receiving treatment at Hospital Sultan Ismail in Johor Bahru,” Balveer said in a statement.

He said the boy suffered bruises on his left knee.

Yesterday, Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the mechanism for the targeted RON95 subsidy is still being fine-tuned and will involve a two-tier pricing system as well as potentially involve using MyKad.

He said that the government does not want to make any pre-announcements regarding the subsidy’s implementation at this time, and an announcement is expected after the first half of this year.

PETALING JAYA: Communism and the causes championed by the now-defunct Malayan Communist Party were racialised as a “Chinese insurgency” by British anti-communist propaganda, an expert in Southeast Asian history said.

Ng Sze Chieh, an assistant professor at New Era University College, said that although the MCP was predominantly composed of Chinese members, there was also a significant representation of Malays and Indians.

He said the MCP included an Indian regiment, albeit for a short time, while the Malay regiment remained active until the end of its struggle in 1989.

“But people downplayed the Malay and Indian membership because British propaganda mills were very effective in painting the idea that Asia was under a Chinese communist threat,” he told FMT.

Ng, who co-authored “Narratives from Piyamit: Life Stories at the End of the Revolution”, with Murray Hunter, added that the MCP’s vision included liberating the Malays from feudalism, Indians from harsh labour in the estates, and Chinese from Confucian patriarchy.

However, these struggles were rarely discussed in mainstream discourses, he said.

“Our official historiography continued this British narrative and this is dangerous because we are presenting an unobjective version of history.”

Ng added that the propaganda materials from China, often in Mandarin, had also limited MCP’s outreach to Indians and Malays.

“The support and materials they got in the 1970s were from China. It was hard to translate because they barely had enough translators, so it was easier to propagandise to the Chinese community.”

Ng said one of those he had interviewed, Sheng Rong, a former guerrilla of Tamil ethnicity, joined the communist cause based on his conviction rather than racial or linguistic affinity to the MCP.

In the book, Sheng Rong said he met a group of communists propagandising in Betong when he was 17, but he “didn’t understand a word of it” as he could not understand Mandarin.

However, he was deeply impressed by the discipline and security displayed by the uniformed group and eventually followed them into the jungle.

Ahmed Hadi, a 47-year-old electrician from London, says he was arrested three days after arriving in Malaysia with his wife and two daughters on Dec 4.

PETALING JAYA: A British man claims he has been stranded in Malaysia for over two months after his passport was confiscated over a RM7 parking fee.

UK newspaper Daily Mail reported that Ahmed Hadi, a 47-year-old electrician from London, was arrested three days after arriving in Malaysia with his wife and two daughters on Dec 4.

He said his ordeal began when a payment machine refused to accept either of his credit cards as he and his family attempted to leave a car park in Batu Ferringhi, Penang.

Unable to pay the RM7 charge, he pressed a button to request assistance. He claimed that despite having a 10-minute long conversation with a parking attendant, the matter was not resolved.

Hadi said he then gently lifted the plastic barrier only for it to “cave in like paper”, according to the news portal.

Two days later, he was called into a police station, where he was questioned for two hours about the “barrier he had broken” and was duly arrested and jailed.

Hadi said he appeared in court a day later but the case was not settled as police were given more time to investigate the alleged offence. In the meantime, his wife called the British consulate and secured the services of a lawyer.

According to the Daily Mail, she paid three guarantors to bail her husband at a cost of about RM12,500, plus another RM5,600 to the lawyer, who met with the car park owner in early January and agreed to Hadi paying RM1,000 to cover the cost of repairing the barrier.

He is due to appear in court again on Feb 17 (tomorrow) for reasons he says remain unclear.

Hadi and his family left the UK in August, spending three months in Thailand before travelling to Malaysia at the beginning of December.

The Daily Mail reported that the British high commission in Kuala Lumpur did not respond to its requests for comment.

The police confirmed the existence of the case against Hadi when contacted, and said Penang police chief Hamzah Ahmad will issue a statement on the matter soon

A CHINESE national who claimed that the mileage on a car she bought was tampered with was ordered to be refunded RM5,000 by the Johor Consumer Claims Tribunal.

Guo Yutong bought a Japanese crossover SUV from a used car dealer in Johor Baru on Aug 1 last year.

“I paid RM110,000 in cash for the 2020 SUV with a mileage of 42,000km,” the 40-year-old claimant said outside the Tribunal office in Menara Ansar, Johor Baru.

The Beijing-native said prior to buying the vehicle, she and her husband had been looking around at several used car dealerships.

“We thought it was a good bargain as the car with lower mileage at 42,000km was priced at RM110,000.

“Other dealers were selling the same model with 100,000km mileage at RM110,000,” she said.

Guo said the salesman who attended to her also showed a Puspakom report confirming that the car’s mileage was 42,000km.

The claimant said she discovered that the mileage had been tampered with when she sent the car for servicing at a service centre on Sept 19.

Guo said records at the service centre showed that the car had actually clocked 90,000km.

“The used car dealer claimed to not know about the tampered mileage when we went to complain that same day,” she added.

Guo demanded to be refunded RM6,000.

“When the company refused to entertain our request, we filed a complaint with the Tribunal on Oct 29,” she said.

Tribunal president Hafez Zalkapli ordered the respondent to refund RM5,000 to the claimant within two weeks.

PETALING JAYA: One of the two Malaysian detainees repatriated from the US-run Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba sketched the various forms of torture he suffered during interrogation by agents from the US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

On the advice of Christine Funk, a lawyer assigned to him by the US authorities, Farik Amin drew the sketches over the last five years of his detention

The sketches were for submission to the US military court in Guantanamo Bay when his and fellow Malaysian Nazir Lep’s cases came up for trial in January.

Now declassified, these exhibits were submitted to the court as part of his mitigation plea for a lesser punishment

M’sian detainee sketched his torture at Guantanomo Bay

PETALING JAYA: One of the two Malaysian detainees repatriated from the US-run Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba sketched the various forms of torture he suffered during interrogation by agents from the US’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

On the advice of Christine Funk, a lawyer assigned to him by the US authorities, Farik Amin drew the sketches over the last five years of his detention

The sketches were for submission to the US military court in Guantanamo Bay when his and fellow Malaysian Nazir Lep’s cases came up for trial in January.

Now declassified, these exhibits were submitted to the court as part of his mitigation plea for a lesser punishment.

Under military court rules, a jury may consider the “nature and length of pretrial detention” when determining the appropriate punishment or recommending clemency.

In January, Farik, 49, and Nazir, 48, were jailed for 23 years each for their role in the Bali bombings in 2002 which killed 202 people. They had pleaded guilty under a pre-trial agreement reached with prosecutors that would allow for their repatriation to a third country and release after five years.

Both men had admitted to conspiring with Indonesian Encep Nurjaman, also known as Hambali, the mastermind of the bombings. They have also deposed testimonies for use in Hambali’s trial, set for hearing in March next year.

According to the declassified documents, both the detainees told the court of the inhumane and cruel methods employed by CIA agents while they were held in solitary confinement in a secret prison in Afghanistan for three-and-a-half years, following their arrest in Thailand in 2003

With his sketches displayed on-screen during the trial, Farik told the court that his torture began soon after he was arrested in Bangkok. He said he was not allowed to shower or brush his teeth for several months.

“I was held nude and handcuffed with my legs chained to the floor for months. I could not move around in the cell. I soiled myself while in this position. The only noise I could hear was white noise buzzing all the time, 24/7,” he said to a question by Funk, according to the court notes.

Farik said he was punched, inflicted with a lot of pain and humiliated throughout the period, adding that whenever he tried to cover his genitals, an agent would slap his hands away.

“I have nightmares all the time (because of what I went through),” the documents quoted him as saying.

Among the sketches shown was one with his arms shackled behind his back while squatting with a broomstick behind his knees. Another showed him using his hands to shield his genitals from view. Yet another depicted him shackled with his arms raised above his head while being deprived of sleep.

Farik also showed sketches of himself in the nude, being shaved from head to toe, and shifting his weight from one leg to the other to try to relieve his pain.

One sketch shows four guards, some in balaclavas, holding his limbs to the floor while another CIA agent straddles him and pours water on his face and body.

Change of heart

Farik said he began taking responsibility for his action in 2014. He told a psychiatrist that he relented in his views after realising that he could not change the world.

Hawthorne E Smith said Farik had started as an idealistic youth from a relatively poor family who was prepared to make sacrifices to defend his faith, which he believed at the time to be under threat.

Smith said Farik had communicated with him via letters written in English for about nine months before deciding to plead guilty.

“He said he had wanted to do something meaningful for his faith and family during his young adulthood. It was during this time that he began to consider jihad to protect his faith. He was an idealistic Muslim.

“Farik said over the past 20 years, he has changed. He is not an angry young man anymore. He is a reformed man.

“He is feeling so much more content and confident in his faith. He plans to go forward as a good and peaceful Muslim,” said Smith, according to the declassified documents.
