A Washington, D.C., charter school teacher has been fired after it was discovered the teacher had assigned third-grade students a number of math problems framed around violent and illegal scenarios.

At first, the unnamed teacher at the Trinidad Center City School claimed he had been ordered to assign the problems, but it was quickly discovered that the teacher had actually downloaded them from a free homeschooling website called "HomeschoolingParadise.com."

"I was absolutely distressed," Dr. Beverley Wheeler, the CEO of Center City PCS, which oversees Trinidad, told WUSA9. "It doesn't follow anything we do. We are about character, excellence and service and I found them to be violent and racist."

Even more baffling, other parents at the school say the teacher in question is a minister.

I went to the Homeschooling Paradise website and took a look at the third-grade homeschooling "Worksheets" curriculum. To start, the site's own promotional slogan uses oddly harsh (and racially problematic) language, asking:

"Want your kids to sharpen their mathematical skills to a razor's edge? There is nothing better than grinding their neurons on Singapore math." You can read more about the Singapore math system here.

Here are some of the suggested math problems from the site. And to be clear, I'm not cherry-picking; almost any question picked at random will reflect the concerns expressed by Dr. Wheeler:

"I was sleeping one night when a hungry vampire sucked 3652 liters of blood from me and 1865 liters of blood from my little brother. How much blood did the hungry vampire drink that night?"

Another reads:

"I took a nap in a bog one day and woke up screaming. 3796 leeches, 2910 fleas and 1044 vampire bats were stuck to my bald head drinking my blood in ecstasy. How many bloodthirsty bloodsuckers were dining on my head?"

And check out this incredibly morbid problem:

"John's father gave him 1359 marbles on his birthday. John swallowed 585 marbles and died. 9 of John's friends came for his funeral the next day. John's grieving father gave the remaining marbles to John's friends in equal numbers. How many marbles did each friend get?"

Last I checked, most kids are warned against indulging in tobacco products. Nonetheless, Homeschooling Paradise offers this equation for children to ponder:

"John, Jack and Jim lit up their pipes after dinner and began blowing smoke rings. By the time they were finished, they had blown a total of 6437 smoke rings. If John blew 52 smoke rings and Jack blew 3896 smoke rings, how many smoke rings did Jim blow?"

You might not be able to play Portal 2 on it, but a new product from the British nonprofit Raspberry Pi Foundation aims to put a working computer into children's hands for the ultra-low cost of $25 per device. That's a fraction of the cost of computing devices offered by the oft-cited One Laptop Per Child project.

For average consumers, don't expect this computer to look anything like what you're used to seeing on your desk, in your lap, or stuffed in your messenger bag. The Rasberry Pi Foundation's computer, created by game developer David Braben of Rollercoaster Tycoon fame, is little more than a hunk of silicon with some ports attached.

But it's certainly a computer. In fact, the 700-MHz ARM11 processor slapped on to the tiny piece of silicon, roughly the size of a USB stick, is a faster chip than what was originally found in Apple's iPhone 3G—just to put it into perspective.

A total of 128 megabytes of SDRAM joins the processor, allowing the super-tiny system to run a variety of Linux versions. The video signal is outputted by a tiny, unidentified GPU, but hooking up a device to the HDMI port attached to one end of the USB-key-sized computer allows one to display scenes rendered by OpenGL ES 2.0 up to a 1080P resolution.

To work the system, all one needs to do it plug a USB-based keyboard and mouse setup into the USB 2.0 port on the opposite end of the Pocket PC's HDMI port. Additional storage comes in the form of an SD card slot on the side of the tiny computer. And that's it: $25 for a fully functional Linux PC that fits in one's pocket.

"In theory, they could be given away to the child, with other ways of funding it," said Braben in a YouTube interview. "What they would do with it is they would be able to engage in a lot of things that we're all consumers of but not actually creators of: Understanding how you put together little scripts that might run websites, that might look at things like Facebook and Twitter, also email."

A Chinese student is hoping to become a heroine for women around the world by launching an occupy movement of her own -- in the men's toilets.

Fed up with long queues for ladies', Li Tingting made headlines when she and 20 women marched into a men's public toilet in the southern city of Guangzhou carrying colourful placards calling for equal waiting times for both sexes.

Now, she plans to take her protest to the capital Beijing, where China's leaders will gather next month for the annual meeting of the country's rubber-stamp parliament.

"We want senior officials to pay attention to this issue," she told AFP. "It is a big issue for many women. During the protest in Guangzhou, we conducted random surveys and found that the majority of people supported us."

Local media reported after the protest that provincial officials in Guangzhou had responded by agreeing to increase the number of women's toilets by 50 percent -- a pledge Li says should be taken nationwide.

The issue has sparked a debate on the Internet, although not everyone is impressed by the protest.

"The Americans occupy Wall Street, the Chinese occupy toilets. This is very different," posted one blogger under the name huashuo xian.
