Here is a snippet copied from a Facebook friend:

Sad news: At midnight, a guy (25 y/o) was playing fireworks with his family. He lit one and put it into the mortar and turned around. But for some reason, he looked back into the mortar... And the fireworks exploded in his face.. His head exploded, leaving him decapitated. His brains and pieces of his flesh were scattered around the ground. All that was left was part of his head skeleton... He died leaving his newly wed-wife who was pregnant with their baby... His parents held his dead body while sobbing for 3 hours when waiting for the morgue van to arrive... The incident occurred around midnight at Damai, the housing opposite SMC. Don't play with fireworks, it's dangerous!

It happened on early morning of 23rd Jan, 0am, location Sabah, KK, Jalan Damai, opposite Sabah Medical Center. I am living at that neighborhood, I did not saw it myself but a few of my relatives witnessed the incident, and he is the friend of one of my nephew. Not in the news yet, it might take a while for it to reach main stream media since it is public holiday and it is not in KL.

Lets treat fireworks with respect people, THROW THEM AWAY.

Do you know that world milk price has hiked since for god know how long, that commercial food makers are seeking for milk replacement.

Have you ever wonder that why some condensed milk much more expensive then some? Like the Hypermarket brand(RM1++) vs Ideal Milk(RM3++), a price difference of over 100%.

Read the ingredients, you have to know that there is something known as palm oil, and since they say how many palm oil where used, its best to assume they use the least milk possible just enough to make a milk taste, and substitute the rest with palm oil.

Thought some of us might be drinking cooking oil unknowingly.

By saying alternative energy, this often indicate usable energy other then fossil and nuclear, particularly Renewable Energy that do little harm to the nature.

Solar Energy

Abundance, intense, and nearly infinity source of energy - Sun. Since aeons mankind has worshipped Solar as god. And today, technology to harness the power of Sun has been developed, and some of the technology allow for storage of solar energy which can be made available at night or cloudy days.

Wind Energy

Nearly every corner of the Earth has wind. And with a wind turbine, which construct of simple technology: blades, gearbox and a small generator, we are able to harness the unlimited, renewable and free. Wind Energy is the fastest growing alternative energy in the world, as many has realised the benefit of wind. Wind turbine is something that can work silently and passively at your neighbourhood by merely taking even less space then some advertisement banner.

Hydroelectric Energy
The power of water, easily stored, easily managed, easily available at any possible time, hydroelectric power has already became one of the main source of energy. How far can this go? How possible can we do this without interfering too much on nature? Hydroelectric Power doesn't always means massive concrete block and sinking several eco system under a lake, micro hydro, a smaller of hydro power, can supply electricity to a community and has much lesser ecological influence.

My first post here, just found this science forum in LYN. It is such a waste to let this topic wasted by some cotton minded people.

The topic shall focus on Malaysia scenario, but then, any examples can be discussed.

A rather simplified preview on Malaysia's energy consumption:

And power consumption is ever increasing especially for a developing country like us.

There is a developing interest on the possibility of nuclear power in Malaysia. But we will leave nuclear energy out and focus on renewable energies. It won't be any sooner anyway.

Our government should pledge a responsibility in developing and encouraging alternative energy, until today, most we see are just some empty talks, not really any visible actions offered from the government. But just in case someone in the gov sector start wondering about the options, lets share some of your thoughts here.

And let's focus on renewable energy.

I can't say that all don't mean what they said, you might really wanted to be the CEO, who knows. But seriously, when you are not facing an interviewer, but during a yum cha session, chatting with your best friends, and your friends asked the above question.

What is your honest answer? What do you really wanted to achieve in your life? Are you sure that you can last forever doing the same old boring thing everyday? Can you really able to face the ugly face of your angry clients for years? Don't you have any other plans than the company one as most likely, your current company is just another stepping stone of yours. Don't you have some plans to let you retire earlier or have a more comfortable retired life?

I once screwed up a 2nd interview(they ruled out everyone in the 1st interview and only myself made it to 2nd, so I suppose to have a good change) just because I accidentally get a little bit honest when answering this question and mentioned something about I planning to do business, the HR faces changed, and then some unrelated question and I was sent home. Up till today, I never get honest with this question.

I would want to yell out loud, "OH who the hell want to stay at your boring company for that long?" but of course, this is not realistic. But seriously, I couldn't see any future in this rat race game, well one should at least interested to be good at rat racing, if I am not interested? I am wasting my time. And I am still seeking.

Your efforts were insulted, you feel insulted, people belittle your ability, your are judged as if you are a guilty person. This isn't fair at all, but the truth is, the world is or is not fair: it is fair, because only the strong survives, it is unfair, because people abuse the system to become the strong.

In 5 years, I would do morning rally car city race no more, I would have a control of my time to spare, I would be flexible at my income and able to decide what to earn, rather then let others to decide my salary. Thats how I see myself in 5 years.

The latest request I have from my supervisor is to prepare the IT Policy for the company.

So I did a bit of google and downloaded this, modify the company name and position title, and pass it up.

It seem like it is not statisfactory, and I am requested to "aquire" IT Policy from other company and compare.

Now I am O.o" and think, isn't this is something that is considered none-disclosure and it is illegal to show it to other company?

Anyhow, anyone working with the IT department, IT manager, etc, have access to this kind of information, and is kind enough to shed some light on me? Like breaking the law and PM me the info or something...

Using cracked software in work

As an IT guy, do I have no choice but to follow instruction?

As we all know, using cracked/pirated software is against the law, lets be straight forward here, we have all deal with them before.

But using a pirated backup software to backup vitally important business data? Imho, this is unwise, unsafe, unreliable, and btw, illegal.

Appearently this manager has been using this piece of software at home and find it very useful and want everyone in the office to have it. And as the IT guy of the house, the request landed on me.

No matter what, I gotta complete before new year or face the consequences.

To be frank, I has never dealt with pirated software in working before, a new page in my resume? Sigh...

Okay, I feel like I am a primary school student trying to get someone else to do their homework, but seriously, my mind is rather blank when I am being asked to draft out the entire IT Policy from thin air. Knowing about pc troubleshooting or windows server 2003 do not help much in this.

Googled it, something similar to law came out. Feel like a lawyer is drafting a formal contract here... just tell me what you think it is? Perhaps about what it can include.

Allow me for some lame whine.

So there was some disaster happened in your company and you are suppose to be the one who solve the problem.

And yeah, I am working very hard to solve the problem, which involved something really alien to you, and doing a lot of googling and reading on forums, manuals, articles, and trying every possible setting on the device. Despite all the effort, I am unable to solve it in a predictable time, and heck, it is not even predictable that I can solve it or not.

But since I am the only IT guy, thou relatively new, I have to solve it because it is my responsibility.

Helpful senior A from dept A say this is very easy to solve by restarting a none relevant server, I know it is not relevant. But none the less, I pay attention and patience who he walk you thru all other none relevant stuff on each and every part of details. Time is ticking and my heart is jumping, I want to get back on the source of problem, badly.

Helpful senior B from dept B keep coming down every 10 minutes and keep asking “Still cannot solve ah?” “Want to call vendors or not?” “Why not this and why not that?” “How you sure this, how you sure that?” In fact, B has called for help despite I asked for a bit more time to tackle the problem.
My head is swelling, and feel like an overheated processor in an oven.

10 hours later, luckily, I am able to make the device to work again, cheers. The solution is so simple, if I am able to concentrate on the issue without interruption for more than 30 minutes, I should be able to solve it shorter than 1 hour.

And in the end, I was being said like I am the one who caused the problem and I am only covering my own shit. Arghhhh, with all the efforts… I just need a silence sleep.

That's what working is all about isn't it?
