Advice for Expat

Hi everyone!

I just moved to Malaysia last month and still coming to terms with living expenses, etc. Don't know many people here but found LYN a very engaging and helpful place

I'm looking for advice with regards to what car (if any) I should get, how much I should spend on rent etc. Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section.

To start: I'm earning RM8150 per month. Currently my tax is 26% which amounts to RM2119. EPF is 11% which is another RM900. Let's round it off to say that my total deduction is RM3050 and every month I get RM5100 in my bank account.

Working with this amount, my initial budget for an apartment was RM2500 - RM3000 for a fully furnished place somewhere near mid valley/bangsar as my office is in the Gardens. Working with the worst case scenario, this would leave me with RM2100 for the month.

Now coming to my concern. I'm getting married in March ( ) and it will be my wife and I. We're going to be doing the usual touristy/honeymoon-ey stuff, nothing too flashy or extravagant or eating out every day etc.

a) What sort of living is RM2100 enough for? What is the average living expense for a couple in KL?

b) Can/should I get a car? I have to travel to Cyberjaya for the project I'm working on every day but I get mileage expenses so effectively zero expense there currently.

c) If I can get a car, what would you recommend?

d) Should my apartment budget be lesser? What areas would you recommend? Ideally I'd like something in a newer condo with decent/nice furnishing close to public transport in the event that my budget is not enough for a car. Any suggestions contrary to my preferences are most welcome as well.

Any other costs/expenses/recommendations/opinions or anything else you'd like to volunteer I'd be more than happy to listen! Thanks very much for your help in advance!

thanks for all the replies so far. to clarify a few points:

1. After the first 6 months, I become a tax resident and my tax deduction is halved. That would mean that around July, I'll have around RM6100 a month.

2. I'm currently renting a studio apartment in Saville Residences on Jalan Klang Lama right next to Mid Valley for RM1800. Planning on shifting to a bigger place, hence the increased budget.

3. I'm here for at least 2 years. If I don't get a car for the first year, is RM3100 a month enough for comfortable living?
