Unofficial thread for Huawei Honor 5x, which is going form RM899 / USD 199.90.

Didn't see any threads for new devices so far.

It seems to tick all the right boxes, with dualsim LTE, sdcard AND Fingerprint scanner to boot.

Furthermore, the Huawei Mediapad M2 10" with active digitizer looks like it will give the Samedung Note series a good run for its money.

I thought I'd make a simple thread for this device, since comments seemed to have picked up.

I believe this will make an excellent spare device.

Hi everyone,

[UPDATE : see post 2 - WORKING !!!!]

I've been looking at device convergence for a very long time. I believe Microsoft and its Continuum technology will achieve it for us one day in the near future, but at present, there could be existing technology that can almost bring us there.

By convergence, I mean only using 1 device for almost every computing and telephony task you need. I will not argue the suitability of GPU/CPU power not UI element size, but the use case I propose is this:

1 primary device that performs both telephony and computing (ie makes calls and lets you surf the web, chat, play games, email etc)

Using this 1 device, you connect it to a larger monitor eg 17"+++ and a keyboard and mouse when you want to use it for content creation tasks. By this I mean use of Excel, Word, Powerpoint or even CAD applications where possible.

I would say that the idevices do have lots of keyboard accessories but not much in the way of casting to a big screen for better productivity.

I have tried it with my Tab S and the outcome is actually pretty good since I have my email and calendaring, as well as productivity apps and VPN access. It works as a really small notebook.

To enable this convergence by connecting to a large screen and input devices, you use some kind of converter.

At present, there are 4 (which I know) kinds of "converter" which Android can use:

1. Screencasting (via Miracast, Chrome or other equivalent) + Bluetooth to keyboard and Mouse
2. MHL for either Samsung or generic Android
3. Slimport
4. Displaylink

I believe most people are aware of 1 and 2, some may know of 3 and some may know of 4.

I have been trying 1 and 2 with all my devices (see my sig) and find limitations with both technologies. I have used the Samsung Allshare Cast, a no-name Miracast dongle and a smart TV, and paired with bluetooth keyboards and mice or via a Logitech wireless combo.

There is a noticeable lag of about half a second with screencasting, and if I used no2, bluetooth input has some lags as well.

So I went to search for a better solution for no2 since it offered less of a performance hit, so I found this:

However, since it is MHL, it is more or less limited to only mobile phone use, and some types are Samsung-only (5P vs 11P). I almost bought it....but I found out about no4, Displaylink, accidentally.

Note that no3 never really took off, and the number of devices supporting Slimport are very very few, so I guess it died a natural death.

At first glance, no4 seems to be a PC/Mac-only solution, but just a few weeks ago, an Android app was launched that allows Android 5+ to connect via Displaylink and mirror your screen, and also function as a USB hub.

For the Note series, the main differentiator is the S-Pen using a Wacom active digitizer, and Samsung's nicely packaged software to take advantage of it across the OS. I personally like the workflow enhancement you get when your device can actually replace the paper notebook, so I am very keen for active digitizer devices, of which currently only the Note series has it in the smartphone/phablet form factor. Larger devices with active digitizers (Wacom or N-Trig) tend to be very expensive (RM5k++) tablets/convertibles from notebook manufacturers.

First off, I want to put things in perspective. I must state that we can no longer think of our devices as "phones" but COMPUTERS. Therefore, since computers have been around for the last 60 years or so, there is nothing "new" or "innovative" to expect from our devices, except for "faster, better, cheaper". Maybe not cheaper but we have seen ASP (Average Selling Price) falling across the board.

In 2002 - it was already speculated that your phone will become your computer:

And because it is a computer, you have to treat it as such, ie regular backups, some periodic cleansing/factory reset and practice safe computing habits.

Note that of course it is not to be compared with the CISC type computers of the Intel x86 desktop/notebook genre, but it is still a computer nonetheless of the RISC variety, specifically the ARM family, with a huge number of variations across manufacturers. The focus of ARM is for performance per watt, which allows low power computing on the go which has been the dream of computing since its dawn.

For the Note series, the main differentiator is the S-Pen using a Wacom active digitizer, and Samsung's nicely packaged software to take advantage of it across the OS. I personally like the workflow enhancement you get when your device can actually replace the paper notebook, so I am very keen for active digitizer devices, of which currently only the Note series has it in the smartphone/phablet form factor. Larger devices with active digitizers (Wacom or N-Trig) tend to be very expensive (RM5k++) tablets/convertibles from notebook manufacturers.

First off, I want to put things in perspective. I must state that we can no longer think of our devices as "phones" but COMPUTERS. Therefore, since computers have been around for the last 60 years or so, there is nothing "new" or "innovative" to expect from our devices, except for "faster, better, cheaper". Maybe not cheaper but we have seen ASP (Average Selling Price) falling across the board.

And because it is a computer, you have to treat it as such, ie regular backups, some periodic cleansing/factory reset and practice safe computing habits.

Note that of course it is not to be compared with the CISC type computers of the Intel x86 desktop/notebook genre, but it is still a computer nonetheless of the RISC variety, specifically the ARM family, with a huge number of variations across manufacturers. The focus of ARM is for performance per watt, which allows low power computing on the go which has been the dream of computing since its dawn.
