new Puteri Umno chief = MANTAP!

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Zahida Zarik Khan is the new Puteri Umno chief.

The 39-year-old won in a straight fight with Nor Hazreena Mohamad Hashim to helm the movement for the 2018-2021 term.

This was announced by Umno's election twitter account at @pemilihanumno2018.

The Pandan Puteri Umno chief was the wing's number two in the previous term.

Umno held election for its Wanita, Youth and Puteri for both central and divisional levels on Saturday (June 24).

Some 150,000 delegates from 191 divisions voted for the new chiefs as well as executive council members.

The results for the wanita and youth elections have yet to be announced but it is a tight race between Datuk Noraini Ahmad and Datuk Azizah Dun for the Wanita chief's post.

For Youth, Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki seems to be the clear favourite.

currently working overseas and also my home has been rented out and the warning letter must be send to old address.

i think of cancellling the insurances as i am working overseas and i dont see the neeed for ti.

my insurances only cover up to life rm150k & Medical rm750k till age 80 also i have to pay

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s singles shuttler Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin (pic) is in hot water for smoking during the Thomas Cup Finals.

It is learnt that Iskandar and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif have been questioned for lighting up – after the official hotel where the Malaysian team stayed in Bangkok had sent a bill demanding compensation for minor damage to the room they shared.

Iskandar and Arif were members of the Thomas Cup team that crashed out in the quarter-finals at the Finals last month. Iskandar played as the third singles but failed to deliver the winning point against Denmark in the group tie.

Arif has been dropped from the men’s doubles team headed by Cheah Soon Kit on Monday in a trimming exercise while world No. 50 Iskandar is currently the third-ranked player behind world No. 7 Lee Chong Wei and Lee Zii Jia (45) under head singles coach Datuk Misbun Sidek.

Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria had called for zero-tolerance for smoking and gambling in the national team since he took over last April.

In fact, one of the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) students was banned for three months for gambling.

The BAM had been strict on other disciplinary issues when they sent a memo to doubles shuttlers Goh V Shem and Goh Soon Huat for venting their frustrations on Instagram about the absence of VIPs during the bronze-medal match at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in April.

It is learnt that the smoking issue was brought up during BAM’s coaching and training committee (CNT) meeting last week but it’s unclear whether a decision was made.

The top officials had a separate meeting with the players after that but it’s unsure whether the players had been left off the hook with a warning.

Yesterday, though, one of the BAM council members confirmed the players’ smoking incident had been deliberated at last week’s CNT meeting but said a decision has not been made.

He said the matter would be discussed during the Malaysian Open from June 26-July 1 at the Axiata Arena, where all the CNT members are expected to gather.

The chairman of the CNT is Datuk Ng Chin Chai, who took over the post from Norza at the last meeting.

“A decision on this smoking issue will be made after Hari Raya. This is a case of indiscipline as we have reminded our players many times about our stand on smoking and gambling,” he said.

“In the future, tests will be made to ensure that players are free from smoking. We’ve done this before but we’ll be more effective in the future.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Ali Rustam has supported the proposal that Umno's top three posts should not be contested in the upcoming party elections in April 2019.

Ali, who is the Bukit Katil Umno division chief, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi should hold the president's post.

He added that Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein should be allowed to hold the deputy president's post while Khairy Jamaluddin should automatically take one of the three vice-president posts.

"At the national level, we should endorse these three names as we need to strengthen our party and be more mature to act as an effective opposition," he told reporters at the Umno party headquarters at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here on Saturday (May 19).

The RoS said the extension was in line with Clause 10.17 in the constitution of societies, which allowed for the postponement of election at the supreme council, division, and branch levels within 18 months of the supposed date of election.

The RoS also cautioned all political parties and other societies to conduct their affairs according to the constitution of registered societies and the Societies Act 1966 (Act 335).

The Umno supreme council election was originally due to be held in 2017.

Ali however said that other party posts at the division and the national level should be allowed to be contested as usual.

"For us, especially in my division, we are hoping for younger faces to join the party leadership.

"We open our doors as wide as possible for anyone to contest," he said.

Ali, who lost in the Hang Tuah Jaya parliamentary seat in the 14th general election, said that he has no intention of contesting any of the top party posts at the national level.

"That time (for me) has passed but if my supporters want me to stay or leave at the division level, I will let them decide," he said.

He also hoped the upcoming party elections will not create more friction between members and leaders.

"If an individual wins, they should be a good leader and those who lose should accept and be good followers.

"We need this spirit to create a stronger party," he said.

KUALA LUMPUR: Zulfadli's father, Zulkiffli Sidek has claimed that his son is a victim of an unfair trial by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

As a father and coach, Zulkiflli is certain his son is innocent of all the charges made against him, as he will not do anything to shame his family and country.

"As his coach, father and head of the family, I am extremely sad and disappointed with what has happened to us.

“My son is a victim of this situation. There is something terribly wrong (with the case).

"You (BWF) charge someone without solid evidence, during the hearing in Singapore.

“Though I wasn't inside, I know that the lawyers had answered to all your charges. But when asked which match in particular was fixed, you say that the evidence is not necessary.

"I am sad that my son is a victim of this unjust trial. From a young age, I have raised him to be a Malaysian player.

"Though we were always outside of the national setup (BAM), we proved that we can do it based on my coaching experience overseas. My dream was to see my son become a Malaysian champion.

"I'm devastated, because after everything we've done for the country, including winning the world junior title (2011), my son is played out like this.

"I will admit that I shed tears of joy, when my son became the first Malaysian boys' singles champion at the World Junior Championships, and the Negaraku was played," said Zulkiffli.

Zulkiffli assured that he will not give up on his son, and will fight till the end.

"With the help of God, I will fight with everything I have (to uphold the truth)."

Zulfadli, 25, was found guilty of breaching the BWF's Code of Conduct in Relation to Betting, Wagering and Irregular Match Results, and has been slapped with a 20-year ban, as well as a US$25,000 (approximately RM98,000) fine.

Hotshot striker Jorge Diaz dropped a bombshell by quitting the team at the eleventh hour yesterday.

The 27-year-old Diaz left at midnight to return home to Argentina when the team were in transit at a hotel in Singapore before their flight to Vietnam.

His shocking decision just comes three days after Portuguese coach Ulisses Morais resigned as head coach after serving for nine months, citing “health reasons in the family”.

But the back-to-back setbacks are not about to dampen the spirit of JDT.

Instead, the 2015 AFC Cup winners aim to build on their impressive 3-0 opening-day victory over Persija when they take on Vietnam’s Song Lam Nghe An in their AFC Cup Group H clash at the Vinh Stadium today.

JDT technical director Alistair Edwards confirmed the departure of Diaz after the player’s agent contacted and informed of his intention to leave the club.

“The club decided to respect the decision and let him go. We’ll look for a new foreign player when the transfer window re-opens in June,” said Edwards in a statement in JDT’s official website.

Interim coach Raul Longhi, who will be officially in charge for the first time, was more scathing on Diaz’s decision to leave the team in the lurch.

“I’ll take on this duty positively even though I’m saddened by coach Morais’ departure. I’ll make sure all players and staff respect the club’s policy and remember that no one is bigger then the club. This is my main priority,” said Raul in a statement released by JDT.

JDT’s swashbuckling midfielder Hariss Harun said the team’s morale was still high after their 3-0 win over Melaka in their Super League match last week.

“We don’t know about the weather condition there and need to get acclimated quickly before the game. We need to stay focused during the match and avoid making mistakes,” said the Singapore international.

“We have analysed Song Lam Nghe An’s playing style. We need to keep our concentration because any lapse of focus will be punished by their speed and technical abilities.”

KUALA LUMPUR: Argentinian Elizabeth Avalos is in Malaysia looking for her daughter Alum, who was brought to the country by her ex-partner.

The 27-year-old Avalos said that she left Alum's father, 41-year-old musician Jorge Gabriel Langone after seven years of alleged abuse, adding that she took Alum with her.

Avalos then added at a press conference at the Argentine Embassy here that Langone turned up at Alum's school in Argentina hours after the court granted her full custody.

She said that Langone and another woman - Candela Soledad Gutierrez - then brought Alum to Bolivia and later to Malaysia.

Avalos quickly contacted the Argentine Embassy here, which reached out to the police and the Immigration Department.

Meanwhile, Argentine ambassador to Malaysia Manuel Balaguer Salas said Malaysian officials had informed them that the trio had entered the country illegally through the Johor border.

“Interpol has also issued an Amber alert and a red alert for them, and we hope to catch them soon,” he said at a press conference here on Wednesday (Jan 24).

Alum, Langone and Gutierrez were last seen in December last year in Kuala Pilah, and were said to have been heading to Kulai.

Avalos, who arrived here two weeks ago, spoke to Kuala Pilah locals who said Langone claimed they were a Spanish family and that Alum had even attended a kindergarten here for 10 days.

Helpful Malaysians she encountered had also claimed Langone had worked part-time at a bar in Mersing for a while.

Avalos is now appealing to Malaysians at large for new information about Alum.

“I have nothing to say to him. I want nothing to do with him anymore. As for Alum, I can only hope she knows that I am looking for her. I will never stop looking for her and I love her very much,” she said.

PETALING JAYA: The national Under-23 team's debut in the AFC Under-23 championship began on a sour note after it fell 4-1 to former champions Iraq during their Group C match.

Iraq's goals were scored by Mohammed Khalid Jaffal Al-Jumaili (fifth minute), Amjed Attwan (28th), Alaa Ali Mhawi strike (56th) and Hussein Ali Jasim Al-Saedi (81st) for a winning start at the Changshu Stadium in China on Wednesday (Jan 10).

Malaysia got their consolation goal through striker Safawi Rasid (79th).

National Under-23 team coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee made three changes to the team which started in the KL 2017 SEA Games final, with goalkeeper Ifwat Akmal Che Kassim, midfielder Danial Amier Norhisham and defender Dominic Tan coming in for Haziq Nadli, Syameer Kutty Abba and Adib Zainuddin.

The Malaysians picked up the pace after the goal but Iraq proved to be the superior side as they dominated the game with their fast attacking moves and ball possession.

The Iraqis got their second goal after Amjed rifled in a low shot to the bottom left corner from the right side of the box to give his side a two-goal cushion.

Kim Swee's men had their chances through striker Safawi, but his poor decision-making saw the chances fizzle away.

Iraq continued their domination in the second half and Alaa Mhawi's left-footed shot from a tight angle sealed the three points for his team.

The introduction of midfielder Akhyar Rashid at the one-hour mark added more bite to the Malaysian team, with his mazy runs placing pressure on the Iraqi backline.

Akyhar then broke through the Iraqi defence with a fine dribbling run and his pass found Safawi, who fired in a low shot for Malaysia's goal in the 79th minute.

Malaysia's hopes of a comeback were dashed after Hussien Ali restored his side's three-goal lead three minutes later.

Substitute winger M. Kogileswaran Raj could have reduced the deficit, but his attempt was cleared off the line by Iraqi keeper Ahmed Basil deep into added time.

National Under-23 coach Datuk Ong Kim Swee admitted his team lost to the better side.

"We lost to a better team, you can see a lot of difference especially the individual quality. Iraq are a very balanced side but we tried to compete with them but we conceded two silly goals through our own mistakes

"It is sad to see the result, which is not good. If you make silly mistakes like this you will be punished."

Its Pahang public relations officer Anuar Hassan said the Department received a report of crocodile in Pantai Air Leleh, Pekan at about 11am on Saturday (Dec 23).

Vera Lui’s ‘Me Too’ revelations

The city’s leading sports federation and equality watchdog are to roll out measures to tackle sexual abuse after Hong Kong star hurdler Vera Lui Lai-yiu revealed she was assaulted by her former coach 10 years ago.

The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee and the Equal Opportunities Commission, which met on Wednesday, have agreed to provide training on anti-sexual-harassment policymaking and complaint handling for local sports associations in the next three months.

A follow-up survey in March or April will measure the extent of the problem and the effectiveness of the training.

Lui, 23, posted on her Facebook page last month that she had been sexually assaulted by her former coach when she was 13 years old, making her the first high-profile figure in Hong Kong to join the global “Me Too” Campaign.

Lui’s revelation sparked an outcry among local athletes and prompted the commission to ask the federation to cooperate on a new survey on sexual abuse problems in the sports sector – which the watchdog had previously criticised for failing to take the first poll seriously in 2015.

The first survey found that 50 of the 57 responding associations had no written polices against sexual harassment.

The two organisations would also approach the Leisure and Cultural Services Department to reach out to more sports groups, Chu added.

Specialists in handling sexual harassment cases urged the sporting sector to create a system that would make complainants feel safe and hold offenders accountable.

Francis Kong Po-cheung, founding director of Caritas’ rehabilitation project for sexual offenders, said: “Every offender who came to us said they knew they were doing something wrong but carried on partly because they thought consequences [would be unlikely].”

He said some offenders were themselves victims of exploitation and sought to compensate by abusing others.

The rehabilitation project, named Specialised Treatment and Prevention Project Against Sexual Violence, has handled around 700 cases since 2009 – in which about 15 per cent of the offenders were never reported or convicted, according to Kong.

Laws and rules posed a limited deterrent, Kong said, and victims were usually silenced by a social taboo and worries that filing complaints might backfire if they were the subordinates of the offenders.

“In the sporting sector, can the selection of competing athletes be fairer and more transparent, insteading of granting the coaches [too much] power? Can the association managers monitor more closely on how the guidelines are implemented?” Kong said.

Sara Zhong Hua, a criminology scholar and member of Chinese University’s Panel Against Sexual Harassment, stressed the importance of guaranteed consequences for offenders, especially if they were the supervisors or coaches of the victims.

“We have made it clear to all staff that they may lose their jobs over sexual offences. And we do not send a complainant away only because the individual cannot produce enough evidence,” Zhong said.

Ex-directors of Genneva convicted of money launder

PUTRAJAYA: Four former directors of gold bar investment company Genneva Sdn Bhd have been convicted of money laundering and taking deposits without permits, involving over RM100mil.

The conviction was by a Court of Appeal panel, led by Justice Mohtarudin Baki, that found earlier courts’ rulings were mistaken.

The panel unanimously ruled that though the company claimed it was only buying and selling gold, this amounted to deposit taking and thus required a licence.

However, the company had no such licence.

During mitigation, lawyer Gooi Soon Seng requested a postponement to obtain a medical certificate as evidence of his clients' poor health.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud urged the court to reintroduce a bond, as the accused had returned their bail after being acquitted at the High Court.

The Court of Appeal panel, which included Justices Zakaria Sam and Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil, allowed the postponement and fixed Jan 4 to hear pleas.

They set bail at RM1mil per person with two sureties, and ordered them to surrender their passports.

Genneva and its then directors Ng, Marcus, Chin and Liew were accused of money laundering at their offices at Menara Public Bank, 146, Jalan Ampang here between July 2008 and June 2009.

They were also accused of illegally accepting public deposits at Jalan Kuchai Maju 6, Persimpangan Jalan Kuchai Lama here, between November 2008 and July 2009.

On May 16, 2013, they were acquitted by the Sessions Court. The High Court affirmed the acquittal on Sept 20, 2016. The prosecution then appealed these rulings.

Teacher with fake MyKad jailed two years

KOTA KINABALU: For 12 years, Asni Ismail served as a government teacher in Ranau at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu.

She is married to a native and the couple have four children, aged between 10 months and 11 years.

But there is one problem.

Asni, 39, has committed an offence in that she holds a fake Malaysian identity card bearing the serial number 780331-12-5186.

The offence carries a jail term of up to three years, a fine of up to RM20,000 or both upon conviction.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie sentenced Asni to 24 months in jail, describing the offence as “very serious”.

The sentence takes effect from the date of arrest on Nov 6.

After serving time, Asni will be referred to the Immigration Department for deportation.

Stephanie also ordered that the fake MyKad be destroyed.

According to the facts of the case, Asni was arrested at SK Kinarasan in Ranau.

The National Registration Department office in Ranau district received an application to verify the MyKad on June 15.

However, the details were not found in the department’s database. Investigations showed that it was a fake document.

Lawyer Muhamad Amirul Amin said he was awaiting instructions from Asni’s family members to file an appeal.

He said according to the family, Asni was born in Tawau, Sabah, and had gone through schooling and teacher training locally before working as a teacher.

Jessica Chew is new Deputy Bank Negara Governor Re

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia's assistant governor, Jessica Chew Cheng Lian, has been appointed deputy governor for a three-year term effective Jan 1, 2018.

The central bank said on Tuesday the Minister of Finance has approved Chew's appointment.

She assumes the position of deputy governor following the retirement of Dr Sukudhew (Sukhdave) Singh as deputy governor on Dec 31, 2017.

As deputy governor, Chew will be responsible for financial sector regulation and development including payment systems, organisational development sector and centralised shared services.

Chew is currently the assistant governor responsible for the development of regulations and policies in the banking and insurance sectors focusing on efficiency, innovation, market institutions and structures, development finance and talent development.

She is also responsible for payment systems development and regulation and oversight of the money services business.

Chew is a member of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Monetary Policy Committee and the Financial Stability Committee.

She is the Chairman of the Finance Accreditation Agency (FAA), a member of the Board of Directors of the Credit Counselling and Debt Management Agency (AKPK) and Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Bhd, a member of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors’ (IAIS) Technical Committee and is also an advisor to the Malaysian Accounting Standards Board (MASB).

In line with the appointment of Chew as deputy governor on Jan 1, 2018, effective on the same date, deputy governor Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour will oversee the monetary and economics sector, supervision sector, investment and operations sector as well as LINK and BNM Offices, Finance and Legal departments.

Foreign workers with i-Kad still being arrested Re

PETALING JAYA: Foreign workers are still being arrested despite having their i-Kad with them, according to the Auditor-General's Report 2016 Series 2.

The report which was released on Monday (Nov 27) said that the usage of the i-Kad as an identification document for foreign workers failed because the document was not recognised as an official identification document by enforcement authorities.

The report said that 84 out of 134 employers found that due to the i-Kad not being recognised as an official document, the foreign workers were still being arrested by the authorities.

"This is because the police have difficulties verifying the authenticity of the i-Kad and would have to refer to the Immigration Department or Percetakan Nasional Malaysia Bhd (PNMB) to verify the document," it said.

PETALING JAYA: Having a family member killed in a gang fight is the stuff of fiction for many, but for Jazz Tan Yee Mei, it was a reality she had to endure.

She lost her father to gang-related violence when she was 14.

Today, she is known as the founder of YouthsToday, a for-profit organisation that matches youths who have project ideas with companies willing to fund those projects.

For her work, she was chosen as one of the 10 winners of this year’s Star Golden Hearts Award.

“I remember waking up that morning and seeing all my aunts and uncles standing in my small, single-bedroom house,” she said.

“Their faces were very pale. My first thought was, did I do something bad? Then they told me about my father’s passing and it struck me that my mother and I no longer had anyone to protect us, ensure that I went to school or provide income for the family.”

That nightmarish episode set in motion a resolve to ensure that she and other youths did not end up like her father.

“I could have ended up in a vicious circle if I tried to find out who killed my father,” she explained.

“I came to a point where I could choose to seek revenge or get out of it and make sure that it didn’t happen to anyone else.”

After losing her father, Tan asked herself what was next, adding: “At that point in my life, I had to decide what to do.”

Tan worked part-time while she was in secondary school, but kept her sights on getting a tertiary education.

“During weekends, I would work at a kopitiam and sell prepaid (mobile phone) cards,” she recalled.

“Any part-time job you could think of for a young adult, I have done it – except sex work!”

Tan’s goal of pursuing tertiary education was met when she received a Star Education Fund scholarship to pursue a computer science degree at KDU Penang University College.

It was during her degree studies that the seeds of YouthsToday were planted, when she helped a friend organise a fund-raising concert for her club at school.

“When I tried to book a hall for my friend, the person in charge told me I needed to be from a non-governmental organisation or company to be able to rent the hall for events like that, as it was a big hall in Penang,” she recalled.

Tan then started YouthsToday and her friend was able to raise RM6,000 for her club from the concert.

The experience inspired Tan.

“I realised then that this was what I really wanted to do,” she said. “I want to help youths to learn organisational skills and bring their ideas to fruition.”

YouthsToday now has more than 74,000 youths between the ages of 18 and 25 registered on its platform and over 140 corporations to be matched with.

The youths have to present their project ideas and the platform will match them with corporations that want to fund the projects as part of their corporate social responsibility.

YouthsToday also acts as a mentor to students to instil leadership qualities in them and put them in leadership roles, Tan said.

“When you organise an event, you learn how to work together and take responsibility for your actions. And by organising events in college or university, they are doing it in a safe environment,” she said.

Not content with just helping to match students with corporations, Tan has also added a feature where students can sell and buy books.

She also plans to start a new mentorship programme, with professionals volunteering a few hours of their time a week to mentor youths who are interested in going into those professionals’ respective industries.

For Tan, the mentorship programme will also be a way to remember her father.

“If he had not had the wrong peer influence in his circle, he wouldn’t have gotten himself killed,” she said. “I want to build an environment where youths will have an influence steering them to do good.”

Her message to the youth of Malaysia is that they have a voice.

“It’s important for them to learn to have their voice heard and to think critically,” said Tan.

“At the same time, they must realise that they need to use this voice responsibly, gather for the right cause, and speak for the right reasons.”
