Khairy must quit, says Ibrahim Ali

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali today asked Khairy Jamaluddin to resign as Rembau MP for compromising Malay interests in defending the MCA Youth chief.

The independent Pasir Mas MP claimed that the Umno Youth chief had failed to understand Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong’s remarks on Mara scholarships.

“That is why Perkasa is upset. How can Mara be equated with JPA. Mara is only for Malays. JPA is for all. If both are the same what would happen to Malay special rights,” said Ibrahim.

“If Khairy could not understand Ka Siong’s hint he should quit,” he said.

Last week, Wee reportedly asked if the Mara scholarship programme for Bumiputera students would be scrapped together with the Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships.

“If the government is only doing away with the PSD scholarships but retain the Mara scholarships, this will not be in line with the 1 Malaysia concept that the government is promoting,” he was quoted as saying.

Wee made the statement in response to the government’s decision to scrap the 1,500 PSD scholarships.

The deputy education minister had yesterday dismissed accusations that he was questioning the special position of the Malays and managed to get Khairy to defend him.

Ibrahim (picture) said this was the first time an Umno Youth chief had set aside the interests of the Malays.

“I have evidence to prove what Wee had said. Umno Youth for the first time had compromised the interest of the Malays,” said Ibrahim.

Yesterday Khairy had slammed Ibrahim for calling Wee “biadap” and for accusing the deputy education minister of questioning the social contract.

Khairy added that he had listened to the recording of Wee’s statement and found that the latter had not questioned the social contract.

sos cili kkk

Low-cost flats for rich

Senior MBPJ officials own low-cost flats
by R. Nadeswaran, Terence Fernandez and Llew-Ann Phang

PETALING JAYA (May 20, 2010): SHE is chauffeur-driven in an official four-wheel drive on duties and states her address in official documents as a double-storey corner terrace house in Kota Damansara. But Sharipah Marhaini Syed Ali is also the owner of the low-cost apartment in Ara Damansara and happens to be the planning director of the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).

She is not the only senior official owning a low-cost apartment.

MBPJ’s senior assistant engineer, Hanizah Katab, owns one in the same block – and so does about 500 other MBPJ employees, many using the names of wives, husbands and relatives to own low-cost homes in Petaling Jaya.

By her own admission, Sharipah is not the only director who owns a low-cost flat. Questioned by a councillor, she charged that there are other "directors and deputy directors" who own such properties.

In a reply to a memo from Deputy Mayor Puasa Md Taib dated Feb 4, Sharipah argued that "if the policy is that those earning above RM2,500 are not eligible, then all the other officers involved should be asked to explain".

Going by the state government’s guidelines on eligibility for low-cost units, they would not qualify by a mile because only those having combined family income of less than RM2,500 a month can apply.

However, according to Sharipah, there was a policy introduced in 2001, when the council took over squatter eradication efforts from the state, to allocate low-cost units to council staff.

This decision, however, was in contravention of the state’s policy, which restricted the sale of low-cost units to those with a household income of not more than RM2,500.

Executive councillor in charge of poverty eradication Dr Xavier Jeyakumar said the policy still stands. "The state government’s policy on first-time ownership of low-cost units has not changed, and any exemption by the housing department must be sanctioned by the Exco," he said.

However, documents made available to theSun revealed how the RM2,500 criteria could be circumvented (see also page 8).

Most, if not all, the low-cost units are not owner-occupied. Instead, they are an extra source of income because they can fetch rentals of up to RM500 a month.

Sharipah’s monthly bank loan repayment is RM322. Her apartment has been unoccupied for two months. According to neighbours, the Indonesian construction workers who were renting it had left for Kuantan after finishing a development project nearby.

Hanizah is collecting RM400 a month from an Indian family of six.

However, a search at MBPJ’s Valuation Department showed that in her application for the low-cost flat, Sharipah gave her address as a double-storey corner house on Jalan Nuri, Section 7 Kota Damansara, estimated at about RM450,000. Hanizah gave an address in Nilai.

The issue of MBPJ staff owning low-cost flats was first raised by councillor K.W. Mak in February when he asked the State Select Committee for Competency, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) to investigate the non-compliance and malpractices in the sale of such apartments to non-eligible applicants.

In a statement last week, Mak said he had written to Mayor Datuk Roslan Sakiman on April 29 to also conduct investigations.

Mak raised the issues after receiving complaints from former squatters who were promised low-cost units but never received offers once the construction of the low-cost flat was completed.

"These former squatters have shown me proof that they were interviewed and given alternative accommodation prior to waiting for the demolition of their village to make way for development and subsequent relocation to the completed flat in their former locale," he said.

Last week, two residents who had complained to Mak turned to theSun claiming that MBPJ officers had taken away apartments meant for them.

Mak said he has yet to see documents supporting the so-called policy to open up low-cost units to council staff.

In a statement today, MBPJ said developers offered excess units in eight low-cost housing schemes, on private lands, to its management team from year 2000.

sos cili tak best

************************************************

because of some @ssholes like these in the government, some poor chaps have to rely on ah long for their rental payment...

good job to thesun for have the guts to spills out the name of the b@stards...

pagi-pagi dah bace story yg buat gua marah...sialan lu sharipah marhaini..i hope karma will gets you back, you greedy b****!

in b4 first/slowpoke

Couchsurfing

i think many of you guys have heard of this new concept (i don't know how long this thing have been around but it's sure new to me..) of traveling where it's some sort of budget travelling mix with hospitality exchanging...

detail info can be found on couchsurfing.org or you guys can just wiki it out...

anyway, i'd read some forumers here referring to couchsurfing in some of the threads in this board...especially the ones discussing about backpacking or budget travelling...

i am one of those dudes who love to travel, see the world, experiencing other cultures, meet and make friends with new people and so on...typically a backpacking-junkie wannabe...it's always fun for me to read other people's tale of their backpacking experiences...spends 6 months..and some even a year just doing nothing but hopping from one countries to another....damn those first world countries ppl!! ...but me...like many other wishful forumers who dream of backpacking like those westerners, can only sigh on the thoughts of going to europe, south/north america...or even east asia...just because we have a lame ass weak currency...it is quite obvious when i read some threads about backpacking or budget travelling here in treavel & living...it's always about bangkok, phuket, siem reap, bali, jakarta, bandung....pretty much around SEA's cities...

while there's definitely nothing wrong about that but it seems like our travelling horizon only consists of SEA...only handful of forumers that i noticed are blessed enough or determined, cool enough to had travelled to europe or anywhere outside SEA..

not to say that most of us can't afford it but it just that the logistic aspect of travelling outside SEA...especially europe kinda put a down on that plan...the questions that always bogging us down usually revolving around where should i stay? can i afford it? where should i go first? how should i go? is it safe? how safe it is? am i a potential conned/scam victim? can i adapt with the totally different cultures/climates?...and a lot of questions, assumptions, anxieties which in the end we just flushed the idea as being unrealistic and settled with bangkok or ho chi minh that we'll go over and over and over and over again...

now...that obstacles can be overcome with couchsurfing...it's dirt cheap and if you're lucky you can have a personal tourist guide that can make your travel an adventure that no money can buy...

i noticed couchsurfing is quite a popular term here in travel & living board, but it is kinda weird that i cannot find any thread dedicated to it...so i hope this thread can be a starting point for couchsurfing discussion...since i'm looking forward to read some stories of those here in lowyat who'd experienced being a host or a surfer or just got anything related to it...because this couchsurfing might be my ticket to fulfilled my travelling dreams

amateur filmmaker need help...

hi guys,

i'm in the process of producing a 20minutes video for my course project...

so far im still struggling with the pre-production and to be honest, i'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to multimedia technologies..

to cut long story short, here are my problems...

-the shooting will be done using a Sony handycam DVD602E where it burn the images straight onto a DVD-R with MPEG-2 encoded video compression. So far my experience using an editing software is with Adobe Premiere Pro. I understand that Adobe Premiere Pro doesn't allow editing done on MPEG-2 (which i'm not sure whether this affect only Sony's MPEG-2 stuff or MPEG-2 generally) so is there any other way for me to do it? i know there are lot of video conversion software that can convert the MPEG-2 to editable format like .avi but im concern about the quality loss and it is part of the requirement to produce the video with an MPEG-2 format.

-eventhough im familiar with Adobe Premiere Pro, but my experience with it is a dreadful one. For a video software that doesn't allow MPEG-2 editing, it consumes a lot of processor power and memory space. My last time using it had caused my workstation to hang more than 10 times. I know there are lots of good editing software out there but i'm not sure which one is good for me...

what if i planned to edit my video on a laptop with these specs:-
-Intel Pentium M Processor 760 (2Ghz, 533Mhz FSB, 2 MB L2 cache)
-Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 900
-60GB HDD
-512MB DDR2 RAM

i know it's quite 'underpower' by multimedia standard but is there any editing software that can suit with that specification?

thanks for taking time reading this and good replies are highly appreciated

Audio-Technica ATR55 microphone

i'm looking for Audio-Technica ATR55 microphone for my film project.

does anyone know where to find it? and how much does it cost?

actually, i dont know much about microphone technologies and it seems Audio-Technica ATR55 quite famous among indie filmmakers so i thought maybe it's a good product.

i'm on a tight budget so if it cost more than 100 bucks i have to drop the idea of buying it.

does anyone knows any good cheap microphone that i can do on-location audio capturing and can easily jack to my laptop for recording?

good reply is highly appreciated. Thank you
