Sharing on Academic Programme Design

Context:
I am working in a team which is responsible for the development of a Master programme in a Malaysian public university at Klang Valley. Our programme was launched in 2018, and I was involved since the incubation. Hence, I’d like to share some of the stuff which may be useful for students who are going to enroll or are currently registered in an academic programme. There are some minor differences in terms of a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctorate degree, I will try my best to be of use.

Components in an academic programme design and what it means to the students:
(The following information may or may not be revealed to students as it depends on the University/Faculty/Department/Programme policies. However, these information are part and parcel of a programme design. This means that every programme (accredited) will be scrutinized to ensure the quality of the programme meets the Standards of the Programme by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).)

Programme vs Course: Programme is the name of the academic title, e.g. bachelors of business administration. Course is the name (with a course code) of the specific modules in a programme. Generally, a coursework programme has two types of courses: core courses and elective courses. Core courses are compulsory courses (including University core courses, e.g. national studies) in which students are expected to complete and pass. Elective courses are flexible that students can pick and choose from a list of choices as long as they are able to fulfill the number of credit hours required to graduate.

Important: for a typical course, its course duration normally is one normal semester (14 weeks of teaching and learning and additional final examination - optioanl). This is not applicable for progressive courses (e.g. research project/dissertation/thesis) which will have longer duration of completion. Hence, from here onwards a course duration will be assumed to be 14 weeks unless stated otherwise.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEO): PEOs are statements which the graduates of the programme should be able to achieve within 3~5 years after graduation. E.g., becoming a leader in the industry in the field of (??). The PEOs should be measurable via tracer’s studies (from alumni feedback, employer feedback & etc.), e.g. “leader” is defined as the managerial position in an organization, hence if the graduates become a manager in their workplace after graduation, then they are considered as “leaders” and the PEO is said to be achieved. Of course this is a very crude explanation and there are more technicalities involved in designing and measuring a PEO, hence the aforementioned is a simplified explanation of it.

Potential students may be interested to know the qualities of graduates the programme is aiming to produce. From there, potential students will know if the PEOs reflect their personal goals or what they would like to become after graduation.

Programme Learning Outcomes (PLO): PLOs are statements reflecting the 8 domains of learning outcomes stipulated by MQA. Generally it means that the programme offers a well-balanced educational values, e.g. knowledge, practical, social involvement, personal development, and so on. As of 2018 onwards, there is a new format for PLOs which includes cluster outcomes.

Students may be interested to know how the programme prepares the students in the specific domains. E.g., the type of knowledge the programme is aiming to impart to the students via completion of the courses.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO): CLOs are statements which outline the outcomes which a specific course is trying to achieve. A CLO will have two components: (1) type of taxonomy (cognitive, affective or psychomotor) and its level, e.g. whether the CLO is geared towards cognitive, affective or psychomotor, and the level of difficulty of the chosen taxonomy; and (2) type of soft skills and its level, e.g. whether the CLO is geared towards a particular soft skills (e.g. ethics and moral). A CLO will also have outlined its learning strategies and assessment methods. At the end of the course, whether a CLO is achieve or otherwise depends on its pre-determined criteria (e.g. 50% of the students have scored 65% and above in the assessments).

Students will need to know the CLOs in order to know what the course ultimately wants to deliver. Some courses are geared towards certain taxonomy, e.g. more hands-on, more theories, etc. A CLO would also spell out how the particular CLO is taught/trained and how it is assessed.

Relationship between PEOs, PLOs and CLOs: There is a mapping between PEOs and PLOs, and PLOs and CLOs. In a simplified explanation, the achievement of CLOs which mapped to a specific PLO means that the specific PLO is achieved, and when a few selected PLOs are achieved, the mapped PEO is said to be achieved. However, this is a simplified view and there are more mechanisms to ensure that PEOs, PLOs and CLOs are achieved in a programme.

Student Learning Time (SLT): The number of hours a student is expected to spend on a course. It is divided into Face-to-face (e.g. lecture), non-face-to-face (e.g. online learning), and student preparation time (independent learning hours) for both teaching and learning component and also assessment component. This happens in a normal semester.

Students may gauge from the SLT to have a rough ideas on what are the expected teaching and learning activities as well as assessments they have to participate in order to complete a course in a normal semester duration.

Credit hours: The total SLT in a course divided by 40. This means that for a 3 credit hours course, students are expected to complete 120 SLTs in a normal semester duration. The more credit hours a course has, the more time a student is expected to commit in order to complete the course.

Why is credit hours important? It is a metric to measure how much educational time you have completed in a particular course. It is especially important when you want to do credit transfer in other academic programmes, and also for other institution (including international institutions) to measure what you have completed in your previous degrees when you apply for higher educational degrees.

Some questions students would ask:

1.	How do I know what is the scope of the written assignment? How can I score?

First thing you need to know is which CLO does the assignment mapped towards. E.g. if the CLO is on developing a marketing model to address to current market needs, notice the word “develop”, which falls under Bloom’s taxonomy “Cognitive” level 6 – creating. This is the highest level under cognitive and hence the most complex. Students can expect this assignment to have higher weightage (usually does for higher level taxonomy) and hence more SLT is required.

On the scope, it depends on the CLOs and marking rubric. A marking rubric is designed in order to standardize (and to be fair) on the grading system for the assignment. Lecturers normally have a marking rubric for assignment because it is part of the quality process.

How do you know how many words do you need to write? According to a guideline (which may now be obsolete), for every 2000 words written essay, 10 hours of SLT is assigned. Do note that in a typical word document, there are 250 words per page. Hence, 2000 words come up to 8 pages, where 10 hours of SLT is expected.

2.	Before I register for a course, what do I need to know?

You are required to complete all the core courses, hence there’s no choice but to complete it. However, electives are more flexible as long as you meet the requirement of number of credit hours to fulfill (generally). Hence, choose an elective course wisely by looking at the distribution of SLT – number of hours on lectures/online learning/assignments etc. You may also consider the nature of the course to complement with other courses you enrolled for the semester, e.g. registering for research methodology first before you start a research/study to master the foundations of research, and to enroll similar themed courses together to ease your study.

Feel free to drop your comments here or email to me at unityofholy@hotmail.com
New Power Rangers toys

Have you seen the new Power Rangers toys?

I saw it at a general toy store at a mall in KL yesterday. Can't help but remembered the toys I used to have when I was a child. You still remember one of the earlier versions where you can flip the rangers' heads and they'll "morph" from the human face to the masked face? Yeah. I had one of those, a red ranger. How much I wished I'd have the 5 robots to be combined into the Zoid!

Yesterday I saw the new toys. I was like... this kinda material and movable parts, they used to be the cheap knockoff! And now they're marketed as the original products and sold for nearly a hundred bucks?! Wow!

How much has the toy industry changed.

That said, do you know where I can take some scenic pictures (streets, architectures, historic places, people, etc) of the city? It'd be best if it's accessible by LRT/Monorail.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Sembang Kencang: If a house is gateway to Hell

QUOTE

If a home had a gateway to Hell, such as in the Amityville Horror, would you as the seller/estate agent have to disclose that as part of the sale? "It is my responsibility to tell you that this home does have... [deep breath] a gateway to Hell in the basement." Or would you try to make it a selling point, like it's Hell adjacent? I've had 8 real estate agents hang up on me for asking this question!

Answer:

QUOTE

as an engineer you are going to have a code nightmare.
you cant just have an open pit to hell like that. It needs to be secured from animals, children, and the disabled. Fences, warning signs etc. Talk to your local building department.
You need to do something with that burning sulfur coming out. Depending on the conditions in hell you could very easily be dealing with hydro-sulfric acid droplets. Which means you are probably going to need some sorta desulfurication process, like a scrubber system. This aint cheap but the good news is disposing of sulfur reclaimed is cheaper then it used to be.
Noise issues. Depending on how loud the denizens of hell are screaming you could violate local and state ordinances on dB levels. I assume there is no real concept of day-and-night in hell so I assume the noise will have a floor followed by random spikes. You are going to have to dampen it out somehow. Consult with a civil engineer to discuss options.
I am worried about ground water leaching from all that sulfur. You might have to bring in an environmental chemical tester to ensure it is not migrating into the soil surrounding said hellhole.
On the plus side if the house is in a flood plain that is most likely not a big deal anymore.

win answer

link

Indigenous Australians most ancient civilisation

QUOTE

Claims that Indigenous Australians are the most ancient continuous civilisation on Earth have been backed by the first extensive study of their DNA, which dates their origins to more than 50,000 years ago.

Scientists were able to trace the remarkable journey made by intrepid ancient humans by sifting through clues left in the DNA of modern populations in Australia and Papua New Guinea. The analysis shows that their ancestors were probably the first humans to cross an ocean, and reveals evidence of prehistoric liaisons with an unknown hominin cousin.

Prof Eske Willerslev, an evolutionary geneticist who led the work at the University of Copenhagen, said: “This story has been missing for a long time in science. Now we know their relatives are the guys who were the first real human explorers. Our ancestors were sitting being kind of scared of the world while they set out on this exceptional journey across Asia and across the sea.”

Aubrey Lynch, an Indigenous elder from the Goldfields area, said: “This study confirms our beliefs that we have ancient connections to our lands and have been here far longer than anyone else.”

credit to theguardian.com

source
