Hadi: "More Than Marriage"

PN-BN ties in Negeri Sembilan ‘more than a marriage’, says Hadi

JEMPOL: Cooperation between Perikatan Nasional (PN) and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the Negeri Sembilan state election is “more than a marriage”, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said today, adding that the two coalitions will campaign for each other’s candidates.

However, he stopped short of saying whether the electoral understanding would eventually be formalised, saying the matter would be considered “from time to time”.

“We’re not rushing. We’ll see how things go. God willing, depending on the outcome (of the current electoral pact),” he told reporters at the Jempol district administration complex during candidate nominations for the Serting, Palong, Jeram Padang and Bahau state seats.

Hadi said the current arrangement in Negeri Sembilan would see PN campaign for BN candidates in BN-held contests, while BN would reciprocate in seats contested by PN until polling day on Aug 1.

He also said the cooperation was aimed at ensuring “Malay and Islamic representation”.

Earlier, Hadi joined several PN and BN leaders in accompanying candidates contesting the four state seats under the Jempol parliamentary constituency.

Separately, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the understanding between BN and PN in Negeri Sembilan would improve both coalitions’ chances in the seats they are contesting.

“Above all, the foundation of stability that we are building for the state’s prosperity is the understanding between the parties, whereby we do not contest against each other or overlap,” he said.

The Negeri Sembilan election will see PH going up against the BN-PN pact in all 36 seats.

BN is contesting 25 seats while PN is fielding candidates in the remaining 11, with both coalitions avoiding direct clashes.

PN component Bersatu has broken away from the coalition to contest under its own banner, fielding 24 candidates.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...riage-says-hadi

Bersatu to clash with PAS, Wawasan in 8 seats

PETALING JAYA: Bersatu has announced 24 candidates for the Negeri Sembilan state election on Aug 1, with the party set to clash with two Perikatan Nasional components in eight seats.

According to the list of candidates announced by party president Muhyiddin Yassin, Bersatu, which is still a PN component, will take on PAS in Serting, Ampangan, Paroi and Bagan Pinang.

Except for Ampangan, the three other seats were won by PAS in the 2023 state election.

Bersatu will also clash with opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin’s Parti Wawasan Negara in all four seats being contested by Wawasan – Klawang, Sikamat, Mambau and Gemas.

However, it will not clash with Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party, which are fielding candidates in Bukit Kepayang and Lukut, respectively, as well as PAS’s non-Muslim wing, which is contesting the Lobak seat.

Among the top leaders being fielded by Bersatu are information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz (Sikamat), associate wing chief R Sri Sanjeevan (Jeram Padang) and state chief Hanifah Abu Baker (Labu).

Bersatu also announced Malaysian Paralympic Council president Megat D Shahriman Zaharudin as its candidate for the Seri Menanti seat.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...asan-in-8-seats

Uber Returns To Malaysia

Uber To Acquire Foodpanda Owner Delivery Hero In US$14.8 Billion Deal

Uber has officially launched its long-rumoured takeover of Delivery Hero, confirming a cash offer valued at approximately US$14.8 billion (~RM60.3 billion). The announcement follows earlier reports that the ride-hailing giant was in talks to acquire the German food delivery company, which owns and operates the Foodpanda brand across multiple markets, including Malaysia.

On that note, Foodpanda Malaysia has yet to issue any statement regarding the acquisition. Uber has indicated that Delivery Hero’s existing brands and operations will continue under their current identities until the transaction is completed and any future changes are announced.

https://www.lowyat.net/2026/398844/uber-to-...hero-foodpanda/

Diabetes At Age Of 14

Type 2 diabetes detected in children as young as 14, says Dzulkefly

PETALING JAYA: Type 2 diabetes, commonly associated with adults, is now being detected in children as young as 14, health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said today.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Dzulkefly said the trend was worrying and reflected a rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among younger people, including obesity, hypertension and high blood sugar levels.

He said data from the National Health Screening Initiative (NHSI) showed that NCDs and their risk factors were increasingly affecting younger people.

Dzulkefly said the NHSI’s findings last year also showed that many young people were unaware they were at risk of developing NCDs, highlighting the need for earlier detection and more aggressive health intervention.

Of the 347,813 individuals between 18 and 30 years of age who were screened, 341,257, or 98.1%, had no history of NCDs and were unaware they were at risk, he said.

“Of that number, 11,751 individuals, or 3.4%, were found to have high blood glucose levels, while more than 9,000 were diagnosed with diabetes and 30,170 were found to have high blood pressure,” he said.

Dzulkefly was responding to a question from Richard Rapu (GPS-Betong) on the latest statistics on NCDs, particularly diabetes and hypertension among individuals under the age of 30.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...-says-dzulkefly

BERSAMA Skips N9 State Election

Bersama skips N Sembilan polls citing tougher terrain, focusing on Malacca instead

Parti Bersama Malaysia has announced that it will sit out the Negeri Sembilan state election, opting instead to focus its resources on the Malacca polls expected to be held later this year.

The party said its decision was based on strategic considerations, including the more intense contest between Pakatan Harapan and BN in Negeri Sembilan, as well as other political issues linked to the state election.

https://m.malaysiakini.com/news/779799

Bloomberg and Reporter Ordered to Pay S$460,000 in Damages for Defamatory Article

• A Singapore court has ordered Bloomberg and its reporter, Mr Low De Wei, to pay Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng S$230,000 each in damages for a defamatory article.

• Justice Audrey Lim found that the December 2024 article about Good Class Bungalow transactions defamed the ministers by linking their transactions with claims about secrecy and money laundering.

• The court rejected Bloomberg's defense that the article merely examined broader trends, stating the dominant purpose was to publish a story about the ministers and their property dealings.

• Bloomberg's reliance on the Reynolds defence was dismissed as it is not part of Singapore law, and even if it were, the journalism standards were not met, and the ministers were not given a fair opportunity to respond.

• The judge also noted material falsehoods in the article and found that Bloomberg's dominant motive was to target the claimants, particularly Mr Shanmugam, with the broader narrative serving as a cover.

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/b...52946?cid=FBcna

2026 Asia's Biggest IPO July 27

China memory chipmaker CXMT sets July 27 listing for Asia's biggest IPO of 2026 — Reuters

HONG KONG (July 14): China's ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is scheduled to list on July 27 on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, two people familiar with the matter said.

The country's top memory chipmaker said last week it will start book-building on July 15 ‌for its initial public offering on Shanghai's Nasdaq-style STAR board as it seeks to raise 29.5 billion yuan (US$4.35 billion or RM17.7 billion).

The CXMT listing is set to be Asia's largest IPO so far this year and the biggest Chinese A-share semiconductor offering since chipmaker SMIC's market debut in 2020.

Government officials and supply chain upstream and downstream industry leaders will be the main guests attending the listing ceremony, one of the sources said.

CXMT and the Shanghai Stock Exchange did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

CXMT, the world's fourth-largest DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) chipmaker with approximately a 7.7% market share in 2025, has ridden the upcycle to explosive growth.

DRAM is a critical component for servers that power cloud computing, databases and AI workloads.

CXMT's mega IPO comes amid rising volatility in global memory-chip shares. It could also weigh on liquidity in China’s stock market, where a surge in tech shares appears to be losing steam.

Some analysts said the offering would not drain market liquidity.

"Memory supply is still not enough," said Donnie Teng, a Greater China semiconductor analyst at Nomura, citing unprecedented demand from the AI industry.

As long as AI demand is structurally positive and hyperscalers continue to spend their capex, the whole market can eventually absorb the liquidity drain from this IPO, he said.

CXMT has long been seen as a technological laggard compared with global leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.

The Hefei-based firm said in its prospectus that it will use the listing proceeds to upgrade production lines and technologies.

https://theedgemalaysia.com/node/810608

BN Gained More Votes Than PH

How BN’s bigger surge erased PH’s gains in Johor

Everyone said it was a cold election, marked by low interest, low stakes, and a result that was already known.

I spent the final stretch of the campaign in Johor, and that description did not quite fit what I saw. Voters were not necessarily disengaged. Many had simply made up their minds much earlier.

Barisan Nasional won 48 of Johor’s 56 state seats, up from 40 in 2022. Pakatan Harapan ended with eight, down from 12, while Perikatan Nasional and Muda were wiped out.

The seat count makes PH’s performance look like a collapse, but its vote total tells a more complicated story.

PH received 556,898 votes, an increase of 189,373 from 2022, yet it lost five constituencies, gained only Puteri Wangsa, and finished with a net loss of four seats.

BN’s growth was much larger. Its vote surged by 463,557 to more than 1.06 million. PN, meanwhile, lost 235,326 votes, and Muda lost another 38,322.

A higher turnout brought both BN and PH more votes, but the collapse of their rivals allowed BN to grow much faster.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Voters responded to new leadership

On the ground, the choice had a name. Time and again, voters told me they were not primarily voting for their local candidate. They were voting to keep Onn Hafiz Ghazi as menteri besar and BN in government.

Many pointed to visible development, investment announcements, and a sense that Johor had enjoyed stability under his leadership.

Whether these perceptions fully reflected reality mattered less than the fact that they had become politically dominant. For many voters, the election was effectively a referendum on Onn Hafiz, and PH struggled to disrupt that momentum.

Voters wanted a fresh narrative

BN offered a narrative about delivery and forward-looking policies.

It promoted household support through Kasih Johor, providing targeted aid to lower-income families, students, senior citizens and vulnerable groups. Its education agenda included Sekolah Rintis Bangsa Johor, improvements to religious and state schools, and stronger technical and vocational training. These initiatives were linked to a promise that Johor’s investment boom would produce better-paying jobs.

At the PH rallies I attended, familiar attacks on Najib Razak, corruption, and BN’s record continued to dominate the speeches.

At BN’s Larkin rally, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh directly challenged that approach. He pointed out that Najib was already serving his prison sentence and questioned whether Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim should receive all the credit for Johor’s development.

BN’s message felt more connected to the immediate election. PH found it difficult to explain why Johor should replace a state government and menteri besar that many voters believed were performing reasonably well.

PN’s collapse changed the contest

Across seats where the same main parties stood in both elections, BN’s vote share rose from about 46% to 62%. PH also improved, from 25% to almost 30%. PN was the party that gave way, falling from roughly one-quarter of the vote to about 7%.

Malay support was central to that shift. BN swept every seat where Malays made up more than 65% of voters. PAS supporters also appeared willing to back BN in constituencies where PN was absent, helping to consolidate a vote that had been divided in 2022.

However, this was a shift towards BN rather than simply a Malay wave. MCA won Jementah, Tangkak and Johor Jaya, while MIC won all the four seats it contested. This aligned with Umno’s Rumah Bangsa narrative, which presents BN as a coalition capable of uniting Malay and non-Malay support.

Voters appeared to be choosing BN as a governing coalition, often paying less attention to the ethnicity or party of the individual candidate. Once these votes converged behind BN, the first-past-the-post system magnified the movement into a 48-seat landslide.

Why higher turnout did not save PH

Johor challenged the traditional assumption that low turnout favours BN while high turnout benefits PH.

In the five seats PH lost, its total vote rose from 64,831 to 99,546. BN’s vote in the same constituencies nearly doubled, from 58,339 to 112,951.

Higher turnout helped PH, but it helped BN considerably more. The decisive question was not simply how many voters turned up, but which coalition attracted the additional voters and those abandoning PN and Muda.

PH also suffered from the distribution of its support. It won Skudai by 14,479 votes but lost Bukit Batu by only 174, and Jementah by 913, while retaining Simpang Jeram by just 170. It remained strong in several urban Chinese-majority seats but lost crucial mixed constituencies.

Parti Bersama Malaysia may have affected some close contests, but it did not cause the wider defeat. Even if every Bersama vote in Perling and Bukit Batu had gone to PH, BN would still have won about 46 seats.

Johor’s return to its old pattern

Johor has historically been one of BN’s strongest states. Its defeat in 2018 was an exceptional rupture, driven by the 1MDB scandal, anger towards Najib, and a united opposition that then included Bersatu.

BN recovered much of that ground when it won 40 seats in the 2022 state election. This latest result completes that restoration, with the collapse of PN allowing many voters who once supported competing Malay parties to converge behind BN.

The scale of the victory is significant, but it may reflect Johor returning to its traditional political pattern more than a major nationwide shift away from PH. After BN won 40 state seats in March 2022, PH and Muda still captured 15 of Johor’s 26 parliamentary seats at the general election eight months later.

BN’s victory ultimately reflected a popular menteri besar, a clearer campaign, and the reunification of its old coalition, restoring Johor as its strongest base without necessarily signalling a national wave.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...-gains-in-johor

Zahid hopes Johor victory will trigger ‘blue wave’ in Negeri Sembilan, Melaka

JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional hopes its victory in Johor will provide momentum for the coming state assembly elections in Negeri Sembilan and Melaka, and eventually the 16th general election, says BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

“Hopefully, this victory will set off a ‘blue wave’ in the other states,” he said in a press conference at Johor Umno headquarters tonight following BN’s landslide victory.

Zahid said the unofficial results of the Johor polls reflected public confidence in Johor BN chairman Onn Hafiz Ghazi’s state government.

He said BN would monitor the performance of all its elected representatives to ensure issues affecting the public receive attention.

“We will not boast of our victory, but be mindful. We will govern better. All the promises in our manifesto will be fulfilled,” he said.

Zahid also said that the Johor government would continue working closely with Putrajaya to ensure its development agenda for the state is implemented effectively.

“This cooperation will bear fruit not just for the state government, but also the federal government,” he said.

Earlier tonight, Zahid claimed that BN had won 40 of the 56 state assembly seats at stake. A simple majority of 29 seats is needed to form the state government, while a two-thirds majority is reached at 38.

Zahid credited BN’s landslide win to Onn Hafiz, describing it as his “official and personal success” as menteri besar.

https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...sembilan-melaka
