Tasik Chini no longer meets Unesco criteria

Tasik Chini's biosphere reserve status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) is currently under scrutiny and its preliminary findings are not favourable.

The lake is the first of only three Malaysian biosphere sites recognised by Unesco as part of the Man and Biosphere (MAB) programme.

The programme studies and improves the relationship between people and their environment through conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

'Rehabilitation efforts may help retain Tasik Chini's Unesco status'
PEKAN: Tasik Chini's biosphere reserve status accorded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) can be safeguarded if the ongoing rehabilitation efforts go as planned.

Pahang's Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) chairman Noor Jehan Abu Bakar said recent concerns on Tasik Chini's Unesco status being revoked was based on the findings from 2021.

"This year, several replanting initiatives have been carried out by the Forestry Department to improve the quality of the areas that were affected by mining activities. MNS Pahang is also involved in the replanting activities near the lake.

"These activities are monitored and the survival rate of the saplings planted in the area is relatively high. I believe if there is another evaluation conducted by Unesco this year, there could be an opportunity for Tasik Chini to keep its biosphere reserve status," she said in a statement today.

Firefly to restart Subang flights to Singapore's Seletar Airport

Good news that we have more choice to fly to Singapore soon

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia Aviation Group's (MAG) low-cost arm Firefly is set to resume its service from Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang to Seletar Airport which serves the north-east region of Singapore.

The service is effective from June 13 after more than two years of suspension due to the pandemic following border closure.

Firefly said in a statement the twice-daily return flights were set to be operated by ATR 72-500 turboprop aircraft with a capacity of 72 seats.

It will progressively increase the services by the end of the year.

Dang, yesterday work from home alone till late night, when its at 9.31pm i wanna order food online manatau just passed cut-off time!!!

Then suddenly oversea customer called me (normally should be around 12am), i need to report my progress to them, after 20 minutes call, i took a quick pee and quickly run outside hopefully the restaurant still open i could grab anything.

Manatau i remember no jogging after 8pm, so i shudnt run, have to walk fast fast back to my car and drive out, 10.03 when i reach restaurant, bangla worker wave me away " SOP ! SOP! tutup"

Sigh, they should allow restaurant operate until 12am, how could they expect people suddenly after work from home till late suddenly can queue in front of restaurant ordering food ? troublesome...

then proceed to home, shower, fap and sleep... woke up by starving

i am an ordinary working people, sometimes when i finish work already 9.47pm, and there's no time for me to really go dapao food as most of the shop starting to close 9.30pm (or last order), this create trouble for me as an ordinary people (same as other ordinary worker also).

Shouldn't the government allow restaurant operate until 12am at least to cater to many other market movers and i?

Heard from my friend, during this hard time, his boss choose not to buy BMW and continue with his old car, his staff heard of that and feel "aduhai , kesiannya tauke" , all propose cutting half of their salary and pay first 3 months of installment of latest BMW 5 series as mysterious gift to the boss.

When boss next week saw the new beemer parked at the office compound, he was so happy

Tried called the same using amoi's henfong number, the no.1 driver accepted the job without hesitation, but once on the road 1-2 minutes, turn back to rest area and drive around the rest area, buying time and wait for our cancellation.

Yesterday was taking afternoon nap, around 3-4 pm i heard so many thunder

Cannot sleep at all after that, but later i heard a familiar voice coming out from the surau's direction.
The voice coming out to calm the weather down.

Soon within few minutes, the thunderclap stopped, rain became smaller,i can continue to take another half an hour nap.

Lojing - major disaster waiting to happen

GUA MUSANG: Lojing is dying. Something must be done fast by the authorities to rehabilitate the highlands or it will face problems like Ringlet in Cameron Highlands.

The saddening fact is massive land clearing for farms in the Lojing Highlands was highlighted more than three years ago.

No action was taken since then and now, the situation seems to be going downhill in the country’s Main Range, with no signs of improvement.

The highlands, which was pristine as recently as the late 1990s, has lost half of its forest cover, endangering the lives of orang asli settlement and rare species such as Rafflesia flowers.

The soil erosion is so bad that the water is now almost undrinkable.

“This is serious because Sungai Belatop is an upstream river in the highlands which joins up to Sungai Brok.

“There are orang asli settlements there which use these rivers for their daily water needs and Sungai Nenggiri in Kuala Krai before flowing into Sungai Kelantan in Kota Baru,” said hydrological and water quality modelling expert Prof Dr Mohd Ekhwan Toriman.

Prof Mohd Ekhwan pointed out that the major source of sedimentation in Sungai Kelantan came from the Lojing Highlands as a result of soil erosion which was also one of the main reasons why the river was not suitable to supply water in Kelantan.

The state now has to rely on tube wells for water in the area.

Heavy sedimentation as a result of soil erosion in Sungai Belatop in the highlands meant a reduction in the river’s capacity to hold the water.

“In Sungai Belatop, rainfall is localised over that particular area which can cause debris flood and mudflows and affect the orang asli settlements downstream.

“Lojing needs to be rehabilitated fast in order to prevent it from deteriorating further,” he said in an interview.

The Lojing Highlands, said Prof Mohd Ekhwan, was the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia as part of the Main Range, which contributed 60% of the country’s water reserves and acted as an indicator of local climate change.

“Any uncontrolled development will change the hydrological water cycle,” he said, adding that it was “still not too late to save Lojing”.

Showing a topography map of the highlands, Prof Mohd Ekhwan indicated that over a quarter of the land was at between 25° and 35° in inclination which was considered very steep.

“If you put a map of the land use side by side, you will notice that this corresponds with the areas cleared for farming.

“This is because it’s near the river network,” he said.

It has been reported that much of the land – some on steep hills – had been cleared for vegetable plots, especially by farmers from Cameron Highlands.

Many of these farms are not following best management practices such as proper waste disposal.

Prof Mohd Ekhwan said his study showed that one hectare was churning out 24 tonnes of coco peat and plastic waste, with about 26,301 tonnes of waste being produced yearly.

“If much of this waste is thrown into the river, it will have a huge environmental impact,” he said.

A 2012 study by Prof Mohd Ekhwan’s team showed that Sungai Belatop had rising levels of magnesium from the use of fertilisers while iron and calcium were also on the rise.

Cameron Highlands-Kinta-Lojing is among the three Special Management Areas in the Main Range where agriculture and urban-related activities have been permitted under strict control to safeguard safety and environmental quality.

The team has carried out research on water quality and river modelling in Lojing Highlands for the past 20 years.
