adhoc creator or some sort Connectify alternative

i like to play DotA with my friends who are all using window seven (mine is window xp). we had no problem playing using ethernet cabel but, only 2 people are able to play .we tried using adhoc, but my laptop was never able to connect to theirs. That's when one of my friends recommend me to use connectify.. since i cannot use connectify on xp, i use Virtual access point insted.. it's helps us connect but it require me to connect to the internet using ethernet cabel as well.. so is there any similar software that do not require me to connect to the internet?
