Leave or be dismissed

Hi all,

I have been working in my company for 17 years, going through many re-organisations and transfer of departments, recently I was found guilty of offerring gift to customer by my internal auditor which I had admitted to the allegation under the reason of 'Salesman incentive' gift. I understand that I had committed an offence under my company's rules and regulation. After the investigation I was called to meet up with the management, In the meeting the GM had given me two choices (1) to resign and serve 3 months notice period where during this period he will allow me to look for new job and attend interviews, and (2) to face the Domestic Inquiry- DI where thereafter I will be dismissed. I was instructed to answer immediately, in the meeting I chose to resign verbally.

That was three days ago. Today, I had submitted my resignation letter. However, my immediate superior had passed me a message from the GM who want me to opt for early release (without pay) where I had declined. The GM will want to meet me on this coming Thursday. I also over heard that he already had a candidate to replace my position.

My questions,

Although I had resigned, Did my offence/misconduct deserves a dismissal? My employment record in this company have been good and clean. I considered myself as a good employee without committing any wrong doing during my pass 17 years of employment. I had worked my position from lower staff level to a managerial position. I committed the offence mainly due to the pressure of meeting the sales target and monthly forecast. Do all these valid as considerations before choosing a punishment?

It is very obvious that my GM is taking the advantage of this circumstance to get rid of me. And now he is taking one step further after my submission of resignation letter... Sad.

Looking for some good advices for my current situation.
Thanks.
