PARIS, Feb 5 — The Covid-19 pandemic slowed down for the third week in a row and new cases are now at their lowest level since the end of October, with new infections falling by half in South Africa, according to a specialised AFP database.

Here is the state of play worldwide:

Fewer than half a million per day

The number of new daily cases dipped below the half-million mark for the first time since late October, standing at 493,000, according to an AFP tally to yesterday.

New infections dropped by 13 per cent over the week, after reaching a record 725,000 in mid-January.

Nearly every area of the world saw a slackening off, with new cases decreasing in Africa by 27 per cent, by 17 per cent in the United States and Canada, by 12 per cent in Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean and by two per cent in Asia.

The number of new cases picked up slightly, by four per cent, in the Middle East, however, while there were only 14 cases per day (43 per cent more) in Oceania.

The number of confirmed cases only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, as different countries have different counting practices and levels of testing.

Steepest falls

The biggest decrease was in South Africa, the continent's worst-hit country, where the number of new cases dropped by 49 per cent, at 4,100 new cases per day, confirming a strong deceleration that started the previous week.

The country, where a more contagious variant of the coronavirus has been detected, in late 2020 saw an upsurge in cases, which led it to impose a curfew in late December.

Lithuania has the next big drop at minus 37 per cent, (700 cases per day), Mexico (minus 35 per cent, 10,600), Japan (31 per cent fewer, 3,000), Panama (minus 31 per cent, 1,100) and Portugal (30 per cent fewer or 9,100 cases).

Biggest spikes

Malaysia is the country where the epidemic is picking up most speed, with 30 per cent more, or 4,800 new cases per day, among the countries which have registered more than 1,000 daily cases over the past week.

Jordan follows with 27 per cent more, or 1,100 new cases, Peru (23 per cent, 6,500), Iraq (21 per cent, 1,000) and Turkey (16 per cent more, or 7,400 cases).

US still has most cases, deaths

The US again had by far the highest number of new cases, with 133,500 per day on average, a 17-per cent decrease over the previous week.

Brazil follows with 48,200, or minus seven per cent and Spain (29,800, minus 16 per cent).

Then come the United Kingdom with 21,200, or 26 per cent fewer and France (20,600, one per cent more).

On a per-capita basis, Portugal remains the country with the highest number of infections, at 622 cases per 100,000 people.

The US also again registered the most deaths over the past week, with 3,279 per day on average, followed by Mexico (1,111), Brazil (1,035), the United Kingdom (1,018), Germany (690), Russia (507) and France (450).

Hong Kong has seen a rise in locally transmitted cases of Covid-19 since a fourth wave of infections began in November 2020. A team of researchers at the University of Hong Kong’s department of civil engineering have developed a sewage monitoring programme that has helped authorities find at least nine hidden virus carriers in two public housing estates. Professor Gabriel Leung, the dean of the university’s medical school and a key adviser to the government on Covid-19, hopes the technology can be transferred and commercialised to help the city successfully stamp out the disease.

JAKARTA - Indonesia will begin its nationwide COVID-19 mass vaccination programme on Jan. 13, the country's health minister said on Tuesday, as the world's fourth most populous country battles the worst coronavirus outbreak in Southeast Asia.

The programme will launch in Jakarta, with President Joko Widodo set to be given the first shot, Budi Gunadi Sadikin said in a statement, while vaccinations in other regions will start in the following two days.

The government has previously said 1.3 million frontline workers are due to be among the first to receive the vaccines made by China's Sinovac Biotech . Indonesia has received 3 million doses of the Sinovac vaccine, named CoronaVac .

After health workers had been innoculated, regional governors should come forward to be given the vaccine "to generate confidence in the community," said Budi.

The announcement comes before the country's food and drug agency (BPOM) has given emergency use approval to allow inoculations to start.

BPOM did not respond to a request for comment, though the agency has previously said it hoped emergency use authorisation would be granted once interim data from clinical trials in Indonesia, Brazil and Turkey was studied.

Sinovac, along with Indonesia's state-owned drugmaker Bio Farma, is overseeing late-stage clinical trials in the province of West Java.

Early results from CoronaVac late-stage trials showed it was 91.25% effective, while researchers in Brazil have said it was more than 50% effective, though full results were yet to be released at the company's request.

Minister Budi has said previously that Indonesia must inoculate 181.5 million people, or roughly 67% of the population, to reach herd immunity.

The vaccine will be administered for free across the archipelago, with the rollout expected to take 15 months.

Bio Farma has dispatched more than 760,000 doses of Sinovac's vaccines to 34 Indonesian provinces as of Tuesday.

Indonesia has also secured over 329 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines, most notably from Pfizer and its partner BioNTech , and AstraZeneca.

"They are retrenching about 10% to 20% of their staff force that stands at about 20,000," said a source.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Qatar's interior ministry announced on Thursday that wearing masks will be mandatory to go outside starting Sunday, and those who do not comply will be fined up to 200,000 riyals (£43,464).

Violators could also be jailed up to three years, or either of those punishments, according to a statement on the ministry's Twitter account.

The Roseville Police Department is alerting victims to refunds available through a settlement between Western Union and the federal Department of Justice..

Following a joint investigation by the Federal Trade Commission, the Department of Justice and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Western Union agreed to pay $586 million and admitted aiding and abetting wire fraud by facilitating payment to scam artists via wire transfers, according to the FTC website. The Department of Justice is now using that money to provide refunds to people who were tricked into using Western Union to pay scammers. The deadline for submitting a claim is Feb. 12.

The types of scams covered include:

Online or internet purchase scams, in which items you attempted to buy online were not received.
Lottery or prize promotion scams, in which you were told you won a lottery or sweepstakes but never received the prize.
Emergency or grandparent scams, in which you sent money to someone pretending to be a relative or friend in urgent need of money.
Advance-fee loan scams, in which you paid upfront fees but did not receive the promised loan.
Online dating or romance scams, in which you sent money to someone who created a fake profile on a dating or social networking website.
Anyone who sent money to a scammer using Western Union wire transfer between Jan. 1, 2004, and Jan. 19, 2017, may submit a claim. Each claim will be verified by the Department of Justice, and the amount refunded will depend on the amount lost and the number of people who submit valid claims, according to the FTC.

Woman robbed on Uber ride suffers miscarriage Read

PETALING JAYA: The woman, who was robbed by a Uber driver on her way home to Puchong on May 21, has suffered a miscarriage.

Sales assistant ,who was over a month into her pregnancy, told a press conference Saturday, that she suffered a miscarriage about a week after the incident.

She said she would take legal action against the share ride firm for emotional distress and loss as a result of the incident.

Wong had booked a ride home through the e-hailing app at around 9.30pm.

She claimed that she did not notice that there was another passenger in the front seat or that the driver had a low ranking.

She only noticed a "small thin man" when the driver started talking to him.

Wong claimed that she did not speak to the driver until he started going the wrong direction despite her giving directions.

When they reached the One Puchong business centre, the passenger seated in front held a knife at Wong and forced her to surrender her valuables.

Wong pleaded not to be harmed as she said she was pregnant.

They dropped her off at Koi Kinrara and was helped by a motorist who later took her to the police station.

Police arrested the driver at the R&R Pagoh in Muar, Johor on May 24.
