Question on Market Size / Definition & Data

Hi guys, I'm doing a bit of market research and am looking for data on The Market Size / Value of Stationery Products in Malaysia.
Currently I'm facing the following challenges:

1. Stationery category is a very broadly defined category
2. There's not a lot of data tracking Malaysian Stationery industry (none I've found so far)

I wonder if anyone here knows any resource or database that I can work off on to identify the market value of the industry (especially pencils, colour pencils, markers etc)

I've been told that Nielsen doesnt track the stationery market. I've also looked up a few ways to map out the market size but the methods seem to work for Business to Business as opposed to a Business to Consumer industry.

Short of requesting for a research to be conducted, are there existing reports, resources with this data (with or without a fee)?

I know that this is a long shot but any assistance will be appreciated!

Removing Luxury Coaches from Satellite Locations

This is in reference to today's letter in The Star (Star Metro Page M8)

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

QUOTE

Satellite stations still useful

WE REFER to “Deadline Extended” (Page 4, StarMetro Feb 19). We agree with the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin when he said, “In the end the rakyat suffers.”

In the same vein, we would like to bring the authorities’ attention to the Integrated Transport Terminal-Bandar Tasik Selatan (ITT-BTS) situation. While we understand that every modern city in this world has first-class transport facilities, we wonder why properly-run satellite stations in places like 1Utama and Sunway has to be moved into ITT-BTS.

As frequent travellers, we can vouch for the benefits of these stations. They have served our needs well and they have good reputation quite unlike those who have been operating out of Puduraya. These stations have high standards and their buses are well-kept. It is one big reason why these companies and stations have done well for so many years.

As residents living in these areas we do not need to travel all the way to the southern part of the city to take a bus to Singapore or Penang.

These stations provide convenience, isn’t this what the authorities try to achieve with the ITT-BTS?

By opearting in these areas, they are also not causing congestion to the city. The authorites should allow these satellite stations to continue to function as they provide good service and do not contribute to the congestion in the city, PJ or KL.

Interestingly, the mall owners and bus operators seem to coordinate well.

There are ample well lighted parking spaces and the car parks are open even for early morning travellers.

The Government should encourage best practices like these.

We appeal to the government to reconsider moving these stations. We feel these stations should be kept while ITT-BTS serves its purpose.

Taking these well-run, well-served bus stations away, “In the end the rakyat suffers.”

KEEP THE SATELLITE STATIONS

Kuala Lumpur

> This letter is accompanied by 160 signatures.

Source: The Star

There's been alot of news about the new terminal and the effect for all bus operators to move in and including the luxury coach operators who have a different business model and certainly not your typical puduraya bus operator.

What do you guys think? Any opinions from residents in this area (Bandar Utama and Sunway) that may consider taking this type of coaches to Singapore? They represent a form of travel that is different from your regular express bus and provide a very viable alternative of travel to Singapore as opposed to flight. (No need to travel to airport, check in, turn off phone etc and get almost the same service as you would on the plane). Most of this luxury operators don't operate in Puduraya, or Bukit Jalil hubs and have their own locations and thus are not part of the congestion in those areas.

I personally have went on one and found the experience to be great (i took Aeroline from Penang down to KL) and found it great to be able to stop near where I stay and have someone pick me up rather than me having to take a public transport from the likes of puduraya or bukit jalil (and now TBS) I don't travel by bus often but would definitely prefer to have the location kept for my convenience as long as it's well managed not to cause traffic congestion.

Would you like prefer to travel to the new ITT-TBS from your locations (perhaps even from downtown KL) to travel to Singapore or would you like the 160 residents and travellers who signed the letter, prefer to keep this luxury coach services locations for the convenience?

Please share your thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Cheers.
Dealing With Office Politics

This was branched out of another topic (How to Get Promoted: http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=1756179 to avoid the discussion being sidetracked.

At some point of time - I guess for most if not all it's a sooner or later case - that we come across or get caught in office politics. Perhaps we are put in some situation tha may likely involve us as well.

I figured why not talk about office politics and we can share how we deal/avoid/manage it. =)

as i read further into the webpage, i found this article (amongst the many interesting articles about career success that i havent had the time to read it all yet!)

QUOTE

Coping with Office Politics: How to Stay Above It All for a Career Newbie
It is tough coping with office politics especially when you are a career newbie. Sure, there are a million of other things you need to consider when dealing with office politics. It is never easy and this article is not here to say that it is easy.

These are merely steps that have worked before in certain circumstances. You will have to be the judge as to how you can make these steps work.

That said, I would urge you to try some of these steps no matter how small. Even if you does not help you to cope with office politics, these are at their basic level good working attitude and behaviors.

As a career newbie, how do you stay above the office politics? How do you cope with the politics?

1. Speak Kindly
Coping with office politics is easy if you choose to speak kindly. What does speaking kindly mean? Speaking kindly means to choose your words carefully. That is not to say to be pretentious. Be sincere, nothing will work if you are not sincere. To choose your words carefully mean do not use scathing remarks or remarks that is of a personal nature.

Learn to compliment and not criticize. If you have a constructive comment you need to give, compliment first. Say what is right about it, then what can be improved. When you learn to compliment more and give sincere constructive comments, coping with office politics becomes less stressful. People cannot attack someone who is positive.

2. Help
One way of dealing with the office politics is to do your best in helping others. Yes, there will be the perception of helping ‘the other camp’ to contend with. But if you sincerely help someone, you neutralize the animosity that was created too.

Doing your best to help others entail looking at the welfare of others. That is not to say you neglect your own welfare. When you take others welfare into consideration, you think about how does your work affects others. That’s help at work at its most basic level. Your work affects another colleague. You should constantly strive to be of service to the others and make your work better. When you do that, you are dealing with the office politics in the most positive manner. You stay above it all and are less prone to attacks.

3. Empathize
Yes, a very often used word in the management world. It is an action that if you are able to do it well, will help you cope with office politics. To empathize simply means putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. Learn not to brush off someone’s opinion just because it differs from our own. You can speak about your differences but do not be disrespectful about it. Remember speak kindly?

Remind yourself - there is no one way in doing anything. Sure some ways maybe better than others. So, discuss and debate. Just do not be disrespectful. Learn to understand where they are coming from even if you do not agree. That is one way of coping with office politics. Firmly disagreeing without being disrespectful.

Sometimes when coping with office politics you need to begin with yourself. Learn to increase your capacity to connect with others. When you do, you turn animosity into affinity and negative energy can be neutralized. (This is part two of a two-part article)

Source: http://www.career-success-for-newbies.com/

Part 1 is found HERE

How to Get Promoted

Hey folks, just read an article that i thought was really helpful for me and i just wanted to share it with you guys. Cheers!

QUOTE

How To Get Promoted : 9 Obvious And Often Not Practiced Tips

It would be safe to say that you would have probably entertained the question of how to get promoted even before you graduated or left school. In my chats with juniors from my industry, I am often asked this question which I gladly answer. However, I sense they simply want short cuts to the next level.

These experiences pushed me to pen these 9 obvious but often not practiced tips on how to get promoted. Start internalizing these tips and make them part of your career plan. Before you know it, you would have moved up to the next level.

One main reason for people to ignore these obvious practices on how to get promoted is because they seem very long term. But they are not at all. All you need to do is to consistently DO them. I have broken them down to 3 main sections: Plan, Attitude and Action.

PLAN
1. Where Are You and Why Are You There?
How to get promoted? First you will need to have a reference point. Ask yourself, where are you now? And why are you there? Is there any key strength that has brought you where you are now that you can continue to leverage for the next promotion?

Are there any weaknesses that you really need to correct before the next promotion is possible? These questions, while simple are strategic. It allows you to check your strengths and weaknesses. It forces you to access what has worked and what will work to get you promoted.

2. Where Do You Want To Be and How Do You Get There?
You obviously need to have an objective and a plan. Just saying that you want to get promoted is not enough. You need to be clear on your next position. Is it a promotion to a different department or a different branch? Write this down.

Now that you have written this down, how do you plan to get that promotion? Develop a plan for to achieve that objective. If you are lucky, you can even work this out with your immediate boss. Most bosses do not promise that promotion at such discussions but at the very least you get an idea of what are the expectations.

ATTITUDE
3. Put Pride, Passion and Belief In Everything You Do
People who get promoted are those that have a sense of pride in their work. And they take pride in their work. They are driven by genuine enthusiasm and desire to do their best no matter how small the job.

They believe in themselves and they believe in the bigger goals of their unit or department and company. How to get promoted? Ask yourself; do you conduct yourself with pride, passion and belief?

4. Back it Up with Skills/Knowledge, Direction and Action
Having pride, passion and belief is only part of how to get promoted. It must be backed up skills and knowledge. That means having the necessary skills and knowledge to do a superb job. Having a direction is important to guide that energy generated by your passion. Otherwise, effort is wasted. Without action which is the actual completion of the task, all else is academic. You will be judged by what you do.

5. See Challenges As Opportunities
Another obvious tip on how to get promoted is to see challenges as opportunities. Very often I see young executives being thrown challenging assignments, which they choose to see as an additional chore.

If you want to be promoted, look at challenges as opportunities to shine. Do not complain about hard work, how hard you worked or if your assignment is tougher than your colleagues’. Trust me, no one wants to know how hard you work. In everyone’s mind, their own work is the hardest.

ACTION
6. What Is Your Part?
Know your part and play your part. What is your role? Are you an implementer? Or are you a leader? Know exactly what you need to do in order for your unit to achieve its goals. Knowing your part means being a team player. No one can succeed without help from others. We all need the support of colleagues. When the team succeeds, you succeed too.

7. Do Your Best NOW
I consider this as one of the most important tip on how to get promoted. Do your best NOW. Today. This week’s tasks and projects. Do not bask in the glory of your previous work. That is gone. In all likelihood, no one else cares about it especially your bosses.

Do not think too much about future projects that are not implemented yet. That is in the future. It is not here yet. Focus on DOING your best NOW. It determines how you are being judged. When you reflect too much on the past and think too much about the future, you forget to focus on the NOW.

8. Do More Than Necessary
If you want to know how to get promoted, do more than the necessary. That means volunteering for work and taking the initiative to make a job better. It also means not sitting around waiting for work to come to you.

Bosses like people who can help them solve problems. Even if the problem is not yours, but if you feel you can be of help and have the expertise to solve it, then volunteer to help. You become the team’s competitive advantage when you do that. And bosses like people who give their unit an advantage over the others. Helping your team stay ahead is then helping you stay ahead too.

9. Do Work from The Next Level Up
If you continue doing work for your current position then you truly deserve your current position. People who know how to get promoted know that if you want the position next level up, you start doing some of those work from that level now. If you are a senior executive now, do some work that is only expected of an assistant manager (assuming that is the next level up). This allows you to demonstrate that you are capable of that position already.

Obviously, there are zillions of tips out there on how to get promoted. These are some of those that I deem to be obvious and not practiced enough by career success seeking newbies. Putting these into practice would greatly increase your chances of a promotion.

[Source: http://career-success-for-newbies.com ]

There are many more articles that caught my interest but i havent got around to reading them all yet!

Just thought i'd share what i've come across here and maybe we can share advice and tips to help each other get ahead in our careers =) after all it would only serve to improve the industries we work in!

Cheers!

Xbox 360 Controller Analog Stick Drift

Hey guys, i have a controller that i've bought since Sept from GH on top of the console bundle that seems to be giving me some problems.

The left analog stick now - registers as "down" movement even though it's in neutral position. Is there a way to recalibrate it or fix it ?
i've since went to GH and the girl said that they can't help me. Is it possible to fix this at a shop or replace the analog stick (i've looked it up online but im not sure if they sell them here in msia) The rest of the controller is fine tho and im dreading the prospect of buying another controller so soon =/

Anyone here got a similar problem with the analog stick drift ?

cheers folks.

Recommendation for new earphones

Okay, i need some help from you audio gurus out there.

forgive for my noob descriptions as i am in no way educated about the jargons for the sound so i'll describe it the best i can.
your advice is greatly appreciated =)

So here goes:

I have been using a pair of Sony MDR-EX85LP headphones for awhile now and love them to bits.

i didn't mind the not so great isolation or lack of it but love the clarity ( i love listening to acoustic and instruments ) and the fit was quite nice as
i was apprehensive about the comfort of in earphones when i first got it - hence the reason why i got this hybrid. bass was nice enough tho not great - clear tho, never felt the "muffled" feeling. the general feeling everytime i used the headphones is the definition and clarity of the sound - i know it's only mid-low end earphones but im pretty happy with it.

so... now the earphones are broken. and i want to find something that sounds similar to it if not better along the samelines of sound profile. i would like a bit more bass but clarity, the mids and trebles are something i really appreciate and will not sacrifice for the sake of bass.

ahh yes .. i hope to find something more durable. the one thing im frustrated with my sonys.. (tho it did last me 2 years plus - 6months of which i spent on the road hitchhiking around the coast of spain and it was quite a rainy winter)

i was hoping any you guys here can advise me on a next pair of headphones i can get .. hopefully around the same price range as those sonys too (i think it retailed around rm200++ then)

sorry for the lack of technical know how, but i did try on several like my friend's M11+ meelectronics and i didn't like the sound tho i like everything else about it.

to sum up, the next earphones im looking for ::

1) can compromise some in isolation
2) clarity of sound and definition in esp in mids and trebles then followed by bass. i would love bass but willing to sacrifice that for better clarity in mids and treble
3) i guess price shud be below RM300 is what im hoping for but im willing to listen to any ideas.
4) other things like it being more durable would be nice (just more durable than the sonys which shudn't be hard-im not asking for a tank)
5) Extras like the iphone control talk would be nice tho not crucial.

i guess i might be asking for something that sounds ALMOST EXACTLY like the sonys but little improvements on the bass and the durability. the isolation is good enuf for me because i dont like the idea of total isolation (just a bit paranoid on that lol) mayb i should be searching the forum a bit more and i might get flamed or something- but i feel like in this senario it's a bit tailored and i was hoping that anyone who has owned a pair of the Sony MDR-EX85LP can help me identify similar sounding earphones!

thanks for the time and help guys.
