First time using Linux

Hi guys. I know this is a cliché topic, but I'm still new to this Linux stuff.

Here's the thing. I've thinking of switching over to Linux lately. The reason is, I think it just doesn't make sense for me to purchase an original copy of windows for the sake of basic use of internet and videos. The thing is, I'm planning to switch over to a Linux system and I have no idea which one I should try first.

Bare in mind that I'm new to this. I have no experience in using any version of Linux. I have tried installing a Linux version before (can't quite remember the name), but, I've not been able to understand the entire system. If I'm not mistaken, it was called Mandroke. Worse still was when I was trying to install drivers and codecs. I just had no idea how to do it.

Are there simple versions of Linux that is simple enough for me to use? Something where it doesn't give me that "DOS" screen to type the codes to download the codecs and drivers.

Thank you in advance.
