Meta Report Massive Spike Censorship In Malaysia

Meta reported a dramatic increase in the amount of restricted content on its social media sites in Malaysia. According to calculations by news outlet FMT based on data from Meta’s transparency centre, the number of restricted items on Facebook and Instagram rose 16-fold in a single year, from 536 in 2022 to a whopping 8,580 in 2023.

The sharp increase began in the second half of 2022, where the amount of restricted content in Malaysia rose from a mere 66 items to 470. But the start of 2023 is when the figures really start to take off, surging to 3,100 items in the first half and then another 5,480 items from July to December.

Breaking down the 2023 figures between the two platforms, Facebook reported restricting 3,250 posts, 1,900 comments, 1,832 pages and groups, two albums, and 690 profiles in Malaysia. On Instagram’s side, it restricted a total of 660 accounts and 282 media items.

Meta’s changelog states that it restricted over 4,700 items in Malaysia during the second half of 2023 that involved illegal gambling, hate speech, racially or religiously divisive content, bullying content, and criticisms of the government. Additionally, the amount of requests for user data from the Malaysian government hit an all-time high during this period, reaching a total of 111 requests.

The restricted access for these contents were done in response to reports from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). Deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching said earlier this year that the MCMC would present requests for the removal of specific content to Facebook, TikTok, X, and other platforms if it received a complaint, but denied that it issues directives for the removal of critical content.

Source: FMT
Meta’s Transparency Centre

PMX is more powerful than ever!

QUOTE

State immunity bill passed despite concern over PM’s ‘wide’ authority

KUALA LUMPUR: An opposition lawmaker today raised concern over clauses related to the role and power of the prime minister outlined in the Jurisdictional Immunities of Foreign States Bill 2023.

Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu) questioned Clauses 32 and 33, saying significant authority is granted to the prime minister instead of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

“(These clauses) clearly state that the power to exempt (other countries) and make regulations is given to the prime minister (in his personal capacity), not (as part of) a council established to decide on foreign state immunity,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat after interjecting in the winding-up speech of law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said.

“So in this case, I feel that it is somewhat different from the laws of other countries that were established before Malaysia’s.”

Takiyuddin said similar powers are typically vested in the monarch or the head of state, citing provisions in the UK’s State Immunity Act 1978 and Australia’s Foreign States Immunities Act 1985.

“If not absolute power, very wide power is given to the prime minister. In other countries, such power is given to Her Majesty, the governor-general, the state president, or head of state,” he said.

When tabling the bill for second reading yesterday, Azalina said Clause 30 grants the prime minister the authority to revoke any or all immunities extended to foreign countries if Malaysia does not receive reciprocal immunity under the proposed Act.

She said Clause 32 empowers the prime minister to exempt any foreign country from specific provisions of the Act, with the authority to impose necessary or expedient conditions or restrictions as deemed fit.

Clause 33 meanwhile empowers the prime minister to enact regulations considered expedient or necessary to fully enforce or enhance the implementation of the provisions of this Act, she added.

Azalina also said the proposed Act called for the creation of a council to deliberate and make decisions on matters related to foreign state immunity.

Responding to Takiyuddin, Azalina said the countries provided in his examples did not have councils like Malaysia.

“It’s one person making decisions (for those countries). We have a council and ours comprises more than one person.

“The protection we provide is more extensive than that of Australia and the UK, as you have mentioned,” she said.

Azalina also said the issue of obtaining immunity in Malaysian courts should consider the procedural laws established and could not solely rely on constitutional provisions.

The bill was passed with a majority voice vote after Azalina tabled a third reading.

Source: https://www.freemalaysiatoday.com/category/...wide-authority/

So if country C commit crime in Msia, and PM very friend with that country C, then PM can exempt them and nobody can sue them?

FCC: Below 100/20 Mbps is not broadband

QUOTE

“I think our new threshold, frankly, should be 100Mbps. I think anything short of that shortchanges our children, our future, and our new digital economy.” That’s what FCC commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel argued nine years ago — now, it’s finally happening.

Today, the FCC has changed its definition of “broadband” to mean download speeds of 100 megabits per second and upload speeds of 20 megabits per second. It had been stuck at 25Mbps/3Mbps since 2015. As recently as 2021, outgoing FCC chairman Ajit Pai claimed we still didn’t need more than that.

Sources: https://www.theverge.com/2024/3/14/24101313...-100mbps-20mbps
https://www.engadget.com/the-fcc-just-quadr...-205950393.html

What's your broadband speed?
