Former Kapar MP arrested by MACC for alleged bribe

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday arrested former Kapar MP S Manikavasagam for allegedly receiving a RM30,000 bribe from a contractor.

Malaysiakini earlier today reported that the Kuala Selangor PKR chief was also being probed for allegedly cheating several disabled people of their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) deposits.

In a press conference, PKR Vice-President Tian Chua confirmed the incident.

Tian Chua hoped that the incident would not be linked to Pakatan Harapan candidates competing in the twin by-elections in Sungai Besar, Selangor and Kuala Kangsar, Perak, this Saturday.

“The arrest has no political elements to it.

“We (PKR) will continue to uphold integrity and fight against power abuse.”

The arrest of Manikavasagam, who served as Kapar MP from 2008 to 2013, spread through WhatsApp yesterday.

The bribe is said to be a kickback from the contractor to secure a nearly RM1 million tender to repair basic amenities.

SHAH ALAM: The Sessions Court on Tuesday jailed a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer for three months for cheating a policeman.

Kenny Chua Boon Meng pleaded guilty to the charge against him under Section 415 of the Penal Code for allegedly cheating Muhamad Faizal Sulaiman, by inducing him to give him RM20,000, in return for not taking further action on investigation papers, which he knew were non-existent.

Sessions Court judge Amran Jantan sentenced Chua to three months jail from the date of his arrest (April 7) and fined him RM3,000 after he pleaded guilty.

“A deterrent sentence must be imposed as this is a matter of public interest,” said Judge Amran. “If he failed to pay the fine, he will have to serve three months of jail.”

ZERO EMPLOYEES AT KLIDC?!

KLIDC: ZERO EMPLOYEES, Emphasis on Matter, negative asset values

The Chinese press have started doing their own investigations and found that even in 2010, KLIDC had net negative asset values.

Even in 2010, the auditors even questioned KLIDC and wrote in the accounts that there is significant doubt the company can continue to operate as a going concern – which led to an “Emphasis of Matter” in their accounts – essentially saying the company has negative assets and is technically bankrupt even then.

Perhaps Tony Pua can help explain this.

But still, the Penang Govt officially awarded the Taman Manggis PPR land RFP to a technically bankrupt KLIDC in July 2010 – beating out 3 other bidders that soon after the RFP closed, had strangely been dissolved, wound up or liquidated.

In fact the Chinese press even pulled out the financial statements for every every from 2010 to 2014 and found that the company have not been financially sound.

And worse – from 2013 to 2014, the number of employees dropped from 12 to ZERO. Revenue also dropped to zero.

Yes, there were zero employees in KLIDC in 2014.

Astro secure EPL broadcast right

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 4 — Astro Malaysia Holdings Berhad announced today that it has secured the broadcast rights for the English Premier League (EPL) for the next three seasons.

Astro chief operating officer Henry Tan said all 380 matches of each season will be available live on Astro TV, as well as on mobile devices via Astro on the Go (AOTG).

“Astro has strengthened its position as the home of sports and the unrivalled choice for sports fans by winning the rights to all Premier League matches for the seasons from 2016/17 to 2018/19,” he said in a statement.

Japan's Experiment With Rates of Less Than Zero

By now, financial markets have absorbed the news that the Bank of Japan has decided to implement negative interest rates. In doing so, the BOJ follows Europe, which sent rates slightly below zero in 2014. Presumably, the new target of -0.1 percent will be achieved through more purchases of assets such as exchange traded funds and real estate investment trusts, as well as the usual government bonds.

There are two interesting and important questions here. The first is “Why is Japan doing this?” The second is “How low can rates go?”
Negative Interest Rates

Let’s talk about the second question first. There’s real uncertainty about how far below zero a central bank can push nominal interest rates using standard techniques like asset purchases. If holding your money in a bank account or government bond causes its value to steadily shrink, you can just withdraw your money and put it in cash, hide it under your pillow or bury it in the back yard. I can almost guarantee you that somewhere in Japan, someone is doing this right now.

EIU: Singapore ranked 74th for Democracy Index, fail election process

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) today published the Democracy Index and put Singapore 74th out of 167 countries, and labelled the Singapore government a flawed democracy. Singapore performed poorly in terms of electoral process and pluralism, with a score of only 4.3. You may view the original report here.

Compared to neighbouring countries, Malaysia is ahead at 68th, Indonesia at 49th and Philippines 54th. Compared to countries with similar culture, Taiwan is at 31st, Japan at 23rd, South Korea at 22nd and Hongkong is at 67th. The only country doing worse than Singapore is China at 136th.

Casanova who cheated women of cash and cars arrested

Attracted to a man looking like a Bollywood actor, three women in Seremban not only handed over their cash and cars, but also slept with the man before realising that they had been cheated by a Casanova.

The victims, all in their 20s, met the man on social media platform 'Bee Talk' a few months ago before meeting face-to-face and then engaging in sex. Seremban police chief Assistant Commissioner Muhamad Zaki Harun said that the victims did not know each other, but befriended the Casanova, who works as a technician in the Klang Valley, on 'Bee Talk'. "After establishing a close relationship, the victims met with the Casanova and revealing pictures of the women were used as blackmail to extort money from the victims," he said.

Accused of bribing cop over sex crime

BALIK PULAU: A man who was allegedly caught having unnatural sex with a woman in a car has been charged with corruption in the Sessions Court here.

Ng Siang Gim, 41, is alleged to have offered RM100 to L/Kpl Muhammad Norzulkhairee Md Akhir as an inducement not to take action against him for committing the sexual offence in Lorong Abbas, Tanjung Bungah.

Ng, from Air Itam, claimed trial to offering the money to the policeman at the Tanjung Tokong police station at 10.30pm on Oct 7 last year.

He is charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, which carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Residents of Chinese city queue over three hours in heavy smog for a complimentary calendar

We all like a handout, but not many of us would risk our health for free giveaway, especially when it’s a calendar.

That’s exactly what local residents from east China’s Shandong Province did when they heard a local business was giving away complimentary year of the monkey wall calendars, reports the People’s Daily Online.

They queued for over three hours in Liaocheng city yesterday when smog levels were on a red alert - too dangerous to go outside. As well as the hazardous air pollution, outside temperatures were hitting minus five degrees Celsius.

ADUN DAP says I no rasuah

GEORGE TOWN: DAP's Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Lau Keng Ee wants a website to retract a report that he had allegedly received RM200,000 to help a businessman get a housing project.

Lau, 35, who had earlier lodged a police report following demands that he pay back the said RM200,000, threatened to file a defamation suit against the website if it failed to do so by tomorrow.

He denied receiving the money and challenged the website to show proof of the allegation.

"If their allegation is true, I challenge them to make a report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission against me," he said yesterday.

Seri Delima assemblyman R.S.N. Rayer, who was there as Lau's legal adviser, said the article which was published on Friday intended to shame the two-term assemblyman.

He said they would write to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate the website.

The website, which apparently publishes unfavourable articles about the Penang government, alleged in the report that Lau failed to obtain the project for a businessman after taking the bribe.

Rayer urged the police to investigate a report lodged by Lau of receiving phone calls from strangers urging him to repay the money.

DAP leader quits post after voting for Barisan

DAP's Tanjung Bungah assemblyman Teh Yee Cheu has resigned as the party's Penang organising secretary for supporting a motion by the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state legislature.

Penang DAP state secretary Lim Hui Ying announced Teh's resignation from the post today, adding that it took effect on November 23.

“In his resignation letter, Teh Yee Cheu informed the party that he has decided to resign over his support of the Umno motion on reclamation at the Penang State Assembly on 20 November 2015,” Lim said in a statement today.

MACC Remands Selangor Licensing, Enforcement Officers In Massage Parlour Project

UTRAJAYA: A Local Authority licensing officer and nine enforcement officers in Selangor have been remanded for five days to facilitate investigations into a massage parlour project.

A member of the public believed to be the middleman for the officers and massage parlour operators was also remanded for five days.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) obtained the remand order on the men in their 30s and 50s, from the magistrate's court here today.

An MACC spokesman said the investigation followed almost a year's surveillance on corrupt activities involving between RM200 and RM3,000.

DAP Dr Boo quit from Johor Opp Leader

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — DAP’s Dr Boo Cheng Hau confirmed today that he has quit after eight years as Johor’s Opposition Leader, citing allegedly unwarranted attacks against his leadership by his own party colleagues.

The Skudai assemblyman blamed this on “Johor newcomers” in the DAP, who he said have made it impossible for him to perform in his current post.

“I want to be an effective Opposition Leader but if I’ve been sabotaged and smeared and with the character assassination to this extent, I see no point in carrying on in this post,” he told Malay Mail Online.
