Be Careful Where You Stick Your Camera!

According to Kaspersky, seller of the $10 Kaspersky antivirus app for Android, Android viruses are getting worse. Well, not really worse, just different. The latest attack vector comes in the form of malicious QR Codes. When you scan a QR code, your phone turns those funky squares into a URL. Just like any other form of URL obfuscation (eg, shorteners), that URL can go to a naughty place. Said naughty place could give you a virus.

Oh, I'm sorry, are you used to a little more hyperbole in your Android virus stories? ZDNet can help with that: "Hackers using QR codes to push Android malware ... Once a user scans the QR code, the code redirects them to a site that will install a Trojan on their phones."

That's sounds scary, but lets go over the parts they left out.

1. Naughty QR Code starts a download of Virus.APK
2. You pull down the notification bar and click on the downloaded APK to install it
3. The APK presents it's list of (probably ridiculous) permissions
4. You ignore the permissions and click install
5. You now have a virus

If this sounds like something you just can't avoid doing, Kaspersky will be happy to take your 10 dollars.

Source: Kaspersky via ZDnet

Android: Technical Details for Creating Wallpaper

After months I have work as a part-timer, I finally reward myself with a smartphone of the Android. One big advantage of Android is that the devices are fairly open, so a normal human can make their own wallpaper, ringtones, and software. (Well, Android is Open Source!)

I was astounded that, although there is lots of free wallpaper available, and there is even a video clips and tutorials in YouTube guiding us how to create a wallpaper. However, there's no simple text page that summarizes what one must do. In fact, there are a couple of tricky points in the process.

Please be advised this page assumes some level of technical background. Nothing that can't be filled in with some trips to a search engine and Wikipedia.

What is Wallpaper?

Wallpaper is the image shown behind the icons on the home screen. Search for "wallpaper" in Marketplace if you want to get pre-made ones. (Note: I'm talking about static wallpaper; Android 2.1 (Froyo) in Feb. 2010 introduced "live wallpaper" that is quite different.)

To make your own wallpaper, be aware that wallpaper is just a simple, fixed size raster image. The exact size depends on your device.

Problem is, what is my graphic display resolution of my smartphone?

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I will take my smartphone as example, My smartphone is Motorola Atrix which consist of 540x960 resolution. Android now pops up your picture with an orange box to let you crop the wallpaper. This is Dumb, but Android wants you to take a subset of it. Don't do that, since it will then expand the image and make an ugly, pixelated mess. To make your wallpaper fully display on your smartphone. This is the formula you need to know before start editing.

(2Width x Height) means (540x540)x960 = 1080x960 (your image)

OK, why we need to double your width for your image?

The Android screen has a native resolution of 320 x 480, but the scroll left / right thing means that a wallpaper needs to be 640 x 480, with the outside 160 pixels coming into view when you scroll left or right when in portrait mode.

To make things interesting when you're in landscape mode the screen is 480 x 320 and effectively 640 x 320 with the scrolling thing, so if your wallpaper is 480 tall you'll lose 160 pixels, 80 from the top and 80 from the bottom.

This makes creating good Android wallpapers hard.

More information about smartphone graphic display resolution.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Wikipedia

It seems like several raster image file formats can be used as wallpaper, including PNG and JPG. I recommend PNG because it's lossless but JPG (JPEG) works well too. (Other common formats like TIFF, GIF, and BMP may work, but I haven't tried them.)

Making Your Wallpaper

You should make your image however you want. Actually, you can use other sizes and fix things in the phone, but you should try to do all the hard work on a real computer.

Some tools you might want to look at are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Fireworks or even Microsoft Paint. There are also on-line tools that do editing, although I haven't used them. Or just take a nice photo with a digital camera and resize it.

Getting Your Wallpaper to Your Phone

There are several ways to get your wallpaper to your phone.
Via USB cable

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

1. Plug your phone in to a computer with a USB cable.
2. Make the phone's storage available to the computer (look in the notification bar on the phone for the "USB" notification, and select the "mount" button).
3. Copy the image into the "download" directory on the phone.

Download from the web

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

1. Put your image on a website. (Maybe you have one, maybe you use facebook or geocities, or whatever.) Make sure the website doesn't resize the image, (most photo sharing sites automatically resize the image---you don't want that, or you must know how to get around that).
2. Open the web browser on your phone and go to the website.
3. Save the image by long pressing on it, then selecting "save image..." from the menu that pops up. It will end up in your Gallery application.

Via Bluetooth or Wifi

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

1. In principle one should be able to copy the image over Bluetooth or Wifi from a PC if you have wireless router at home/office.

After you've completed these steps, the image should be in the downloads directory on your phone. When you run the Gallery application, there should be a download section with your images in it.

Getting Your Wallpaper to Your Home Screen

Finally you need to get your wallpaper on to your home screen. Several paths, all alike:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

1. Long click on a blank part of the home screen and click on "wallpapers" and "Select wallpaper from...Pictures" on the menus that pop up.
2. Run the Gallery application, navigate to show the picture you want on the whole screen, then select "Set as..." and "Set picture as...Wallpaper"

Android now pops up your picture with an orange box to let you crop the wallpaper. Slide the orange box to a corner of your image, then touch and drag the opposite corner until the orange box covers your whole image.

Finally, click the "save" button. You will get a "saving picture" alert, then a "setting wallpaper" alert, then finally a new home screen wallpaper.

So, I wish you guys enable to create a wallpaper of your favourite without worries! I'm so sorry if my post is way to long to read.
